Not once did i ever have bad service while i was in France. Perhaps the French culture is just more service oriented than Britain or Germany.

take out = no tip... which is the whole reason of doing take out.also, i hate when im out with friends who are servers, who put bullshit pressure on me to tip more, when im already tipping fairly.also at sushi blues with large parties, they add the tip on already and have a line for additional tip. screw that. you added my 18% and thats where it ends.
6/18/2009 12:31:56 PM
I feel very strongly that tipping is the thing to do, if not necessarily the right thing to do. But I'm keeping an open mind here. Are there certain types of wait service that maybe deserve tipping where others don't, or deserve less of a tip? The barista question intrigued me. Bartender, barista, waiter, delivery guy, who falls where?
6/18/2009 12:34:03 PM
I don't drink coffee and don't get food delivered, so those two really don't affect me. Wait staff: 25-30%Bartenders: completely depends on how well i know/like you. can be anywhere from $1/drink to 50%+

these threads are great on here because a lot of the posters have worked in the service industryif tipping were to be removed and higher wages put in place - cost of food would go up ]]

30%?are you guys eating at mcdonalds?
6/18/2009 12:52:48 PM
I worked at Sonic for much of high school and a few years after, but I was a cook, not a carhop. I did carhop from time to time, but I was making regular pay on those shifts, so I didn't really care about the tipping. What you should take from this, dyne, is that carhops were paid, like, $2.50/hour at the time, which is bullshit. This one time, though, these two girls who were high as hell tipped me, like, twelve of those gold Sacagawea dollars.[Edited on June 18, 2009 at 12:55 PM. I, too worked in food service and I also know how easy it is, or rather how hard it is to fuck up. so if my order gets screwed up the tip usually goes cliff diving...but i always tip. I dont tip badly if it takes awhile for the food to come out cause thats the kitchens fault.I also tip on how well the waitress acts, but i think most people do that anyway

theres a huge difference between tipping with a card and telling them to keep the change.
6/18/2009 1:14:46 PM
i always pay with card as much as possible because its much easier to tip with it.
6/18/2009 1:17:36 PM
My mother is a barista, and she said that she gets maybe two tips per 4-7 hour shift. She works in a family owned business not Starfucks or something.

20% normally, even more if they deserve it, nothing if they really suck.
6/18/2009 2:19:03 PM
I'm usually pretty generous, just because i know there are some cheap fuckers out there. And if the service is bad, I'm not at all gracious. If the kitchen is fucking up or they're just busy, I understand completely. But if you're rude, or just not present at all, bye bye tip.
6/18/2009 2:21:02 PM
i usually dont tip when im eating that crap eastern nc bbq, but when im eating that western red sauce style i will tip > %35

sometimes i dont feel like waiting for change so i tip way too much. i ate at TGI Fridays a couple weeks ago with one other person and I think it was like ~$25-26. I gave her $40 and said keep it because I didn't have change

I always tip waiters generously - at least 20%. What I'd like to know is who makes a decent wage and who needs the extra tip to make ends meet. Sometimes it just isn't clear - like at the pet groomer. Do they get paid a decent wage or do they make less under the assumption that they will recieve tips? What about the starbucks baristas? Don't they make good money or do they really need the tip money? I do tip the car wash dudes (I figure they can't make much), but I always forget about general service people until after the fact (and often don't have cash on hand to give). And my hair dresser - she's the owner, so should I not tip her? I always have, but maybe I'm just handing out money that I should be holding onto.

I base my tips on this basic formulanormal service (baseline) 20%if someone is hurrying to get in and out, 20% covers normal time.let's use Ruby Tuesday's as an example. For a party of two to sit and eat, it takes about 30 minutes from the time they sit down, to the time they leave. This 30-mins to me is worth the 20% tip. If i was in a larger party, for every 30 additional minutes, the tip goes up 10% for GOOD service. So if the wait staff did a good job, for an hour long dinner at a normal restaurant, 30%.Usually, the nicer the restaurant, the more expensive the food, the longer it takes. Use the same logic.Ruth's Chris usually takes about an hour. So: 1-hour = 20%, 2-hours = 30%, and so on.Bars tend to be a little different.I tip $1 per drink as a baseline, which usually works out to 20%. If I know the server/bartender/barmaid, I might tip as much as 50% or more.Remember, when you are sitting in their section for longer than necessary, you are an opportunity cost to them and you require more work, so one should tip more. For bad service, I tip 10%...but it has to be REALLY bad. Messed up the order...never refilled the drinks....etc.At the barber shop, if the owner of the shop cuts my hair and there is no-one else working, i tip $2 on $13. If the other chick is working that day, I do not tip, cuz he is making money off of the fact that she is cutting hair.If someone other than the owner is cutting my hair, I tip the same rate as before, $2 on $13.For pizza delivery, I tip a dollar or two if there is a delivery charge, 25% if there is not.[Edited on June 18, 2009 at 4:40 PM. It's pretty easy, I just tip multiples of the tax starting at 2x. I can't remember the last time I gave a $0 tip, but I understand the difference between being busy and being a fucktard.
