There's actually no issue with employee email on an outsourced platform.

If there was, then the university wouldn't allow students, faculty, and staff to forward their email to an outside account. You'll find some faculty and staff who either don't use the university system at all (the campus directory lists a gmail, yahoo, etc. address), or who only use it as a forwarding service.

^ you don't talk to the university lawyers much, do you? they're the reason why gmail hasn't been adopted as a campus standard for students OR staff/faculty yet.

Yeah, I wouldn't bet on that until you hear it being specifically announced. The committee's recommendation to use Google Apps for Education as a mail service for students isn't binding.

I'm reading on the [ngw] list and there is this huge crew of Novell fanboys who are completely ignorant of mail clients built after 1995. They'd probably be blown over if we showed them a PINE screen shot.

It appears I'm locked out of webmail.ncsu.edu now and can only login to gwweb.ncsu.edu. Tried a few times and it keeps telling me I no longer exist on webmail. It's like I'm now being forced to use the crap that is gwweb if I want a web interface for convenience.

NCSU lawyers have handed off gmail to the UNC-GA lawyers who are negotiating for the entire system. Gmail for students will not happen by fall 09... not with a month to go and no contract. UNC-GA is also talking with MS, so don't write that off in the event that certain administrators who come from MS schools in Florida decide to override the committee recommendation for gmail.

This is becoming an embarrassment. I'm tired of making excuses for this system. Just tired. Does anyone know the last time GW enjoyed 24 contiguous hours of uptime? It kills me that there is still another mail system that just works that we've been cut off from while I am explaining why mail hasn't been accessible for five hours today.
