I always thought hazing in any situation was fucking stupid and I never took part in it in any setting. I was the only freshman on the baseball team my first year of high school and I certainly took a lot of shit because of it (nothing physical besides being "forced" to drink and whatnot at parties) maybe that is why... it just seemed stupid. I mean shouldn't you want everyone on your team to be in the best mental shape possible in games/practices?

When I had the chance to do it as an upperclassman I still thought it was dumb...

Well son, I think you've got this one pretty well figured out. It sounds like, at least from what I can gather here, hazing is dumb.

... and if it's the fraternities to blame, then really shouldn't we hold the educational institution responsible? and if its the fault of the educational institutions with which the United States of America develops todays youth into tomorrows future, aren't you saying that the country should be accountable? well i for one am not going to stand here, and let you badmouth the United States of America!!

Not this shit again

I had a great time with my Fraternity in college and still to this day. I gained a lot of leadership experience, gave back to the community, made some life long friends, learned from older brothers and helped younger ones, and also had a lot of fun at parties and on trips. A Fraternity is also like a business where you have committees and responsibilities that help your prepare for the real world. And don't always group Fraternities together. There are a wide range of personalities and agendas out there so try not to trash them when you don't even know them.

Oh and the dues thing, ours have been between $300 and $500 for years now

And what's wrong with that?

Dues are used for: insurance, food, room & board (if you live in the house), fees to the national office, and social functions (sometimes including a formal event out of town).

Most average people pay for the same things, they just don't do it collectively and all up front. OMGBUYINGFRENDS!

I'd rather get into a conversation about how fraternities share the same worn-out skanks and how ever dating or having anything to do with girls that are literally attracted to that scene is just asking for trouble.

Those girls end up marrying some goober from a different school that has no idea about her past. She remains his ideal perfect wife until he discovers in a few years that she's banging his best friend and everyone with a pole and a pulse at the local country club.

Nah, the truth is often stranger than fiction. These women are already married or marrying someone soon that has no idea about her past. It is a rather disgusting truth.

my friend told me a bunch of stories about how he got hazed as a pledge, and none of the things i heard amounted to anything more than getting really drunk with the guys in your pledge class. granted, it was forced on them by the older guys, but no one was ever forced to do anything humiliating. in fact, every single member of my friend's pledge class said they would go through pledging again because they thought it was fun. i would have no problem doing the stuff they did.

It depends on which organization you're in, like someone's already said. Hazing can get exceptionally bad to non existent.

Back to the girls -

Of all the ones I've had anything to do with, related to a fraternity relationship in anyway, and assumably if not knowingly in that generalization I've already made, they've all had one thing in common. They were all terrible in bed.

i dated a girl in a sorority once and she was pretty bad in bed because she just sat there for me to pump away and do whatever i want (gets old after a while), but she could suck a mean dick.

i got to the root of it one time. she said that her mother told her in high school that you have to do what your man wants to make him happy and keep him (this was in regards to sexual needs) and then she was reiterated this fact by her sisters.

as such she'd suck a dick like no one's business and she'd sit there in bed so you could get off as soon as possible.

I used to think they were gay, but I eventually realized that most of my friends were in them

I just liked to float around and not be tied to any social sect

My brothers are in them now, and apparently love it, which is cool for me because its like a cut out the middle man card to college ass

What is your definition of success? A certain salary or at least 30k/year? Home owner? Nice car? Making more than your parents?

I'm just saying, how low (30k) or high (6 figures) is the bar for your measurement of success? Is it simply a dollar amount and your possessions or is it relative to what your parents make/made? For some people, if their parents made less than 30K throughout their lives, landing a job that pays twice that is very successful for them, while another person whose parents rake in 250k would consider themselves unsuccessful with the same 60k salary.

Its got nothing to do with your parents

Its not a set dollar amount, although that amount rises and falls based on where you live and what you do

Its not your car (I know millionaires in Mazdas)

Its not your home

Its not something tangible, just a general sense that said person has made something of his or herself

IMO

That's a good philosophy to have, but let's face it, the public defines success with tangible results, not feelings. If someone talks about how successful someone else is, it's rarely based upon how that person feels about themselves... People are shallow and focus on what they see, so maybe the question is what "most people" think defines success, and go from there.

I agree for the most part. I think in this context a success is people who have self-satisfaction, productive at meeting their goals, and can make friends without daddy paying for them.

Networking is a different story, so I am all for professional frats. Social frats: can't find friends to play beer pong with.

exactly. I don't have a chart of my friend's tangible assests

ADD: But i agree with your next statement, our culture needs to see physical results.
