"I could just as easily post pictures of bloody clumps of human body parts, children without legs, a dying woman with her entrails hanging out, or a blown up school. Not caused by Saddam or terrorist attacks
but by US (with allies) "Collateral damage". "

Go ahead, the media already has....
What'd ya say I go find some horrible WWII pics from D-Day and post 'em...would that convince you the US shouldnt have gotten itself involved?

Quote :
"typical response. Thats about all we can expect of proponents of this war.
"There were no WMDs? ehh, whatever"
"They didn't greet us with flowers? yeah, whatever"
"Up to half-million Iraqis have been killed in fighting since the invasion? ok, whatever"
"The country is imploding in a civil war? fine, whatever"
"The long-term cost of the war may be $2 Trillion? sure, whatever""

typical reponse of the oponents of this war....
"there were free elections with better turnout than America. ehh, whatever"
"Iraq security is taking over and Iraq is celebrating...yeah, whatever"
"Obama and most democrats who now control this nation were completely wrong on the surge....fine, whatever"
"the democrats supported the war to begin with, if they were somehow duped by GW Bush (whom you all claim is not that smart), why'd you re-elect them?...yeah, whatever"

I've said this before and I'll say it again, in 10 years, Iraq will be a prosperous nation and the US and Bush will be looked upon in a much better light.

what difficult political agreements have been made in iraq?

elections aren't the only requirement for a functioning democracy.

you are a looney if you think that. have you been to any arab country? have you talked with a lot of arab people? do you have any idea of the arab psyche, culture, traditions, taboos, etc?

and anyway, prosperous is a meaningless word. would you call a country prosperous if it has skyscrapers and all the glitz and glamour, but 75% of the women can't choose their husbands and are pretty much forced to marry someone of their parents' choice?

u are kidding right. Saddams Iraq has no parallel or possible analogue to Imperial Japan or Nazi Germany.

To theDuke866: Point well taken. I should have qualified my position more closely:

Quote :
"In any event, I'm confident that most a significant number of Iraqis would rather die on their feet than live on their knees."

Fixed.

And now, more images of Iraqis celebrating what could be and almost is:

Looks a lot like freedom to me.

you said they are celebrating their freedom.

the leaving of american troops.

The freedom is from Saddam. The sovereignty is of the new nation.

Quote :
"'The withdrawal of American troops is completed now from all cities after everything they sacrificed for the sake of security,' said Sadiq al-Rikabi, a senior adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. 'We are now celebrating the restoration of sovereignty.'"

Of course Iraqis don't want foreign troops in their streets. Neither have other countries in the past that the United States has helped to rebuild, but it's a necessary evil, if you will.

^^^^

Saddam's been gone for years. And what the adviser to the PM said proves nothing about what the PEOPLE ON THE STREETS are celebrating.

They are celebrating the leaving of an occupying force and the RESULTING freedom.

Hope you slept well at night after making your dreamy comments.

Not directly relevant, but still very interesting:

FBI interviews detail Saddam Hussein's fear of Iran, WMD bluff

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/07/02/fbi.saddam.hussein.interview/index.html

Even murderous dictators can say a few truthful things, which put the leader of the world to shame.

"Fireworks, not bombings, colored the Baghdad skyline late Monday, and thousands attended a party in a park where singers performed patriotic songs. Loudspeakers at police stations and military checkpoints played recordings of similar tunes throughout the day, as Iraqi military vehicles decorated with flowers and national flags patrolled the capital.

"All of us are happy — Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds on this day," Waleed al-Bahadili said as he celebrated at the park. "The Americans harmed and insulted us too much."

^ i don't know, I can see their dislike for us unifying them internally.

It won't be long, I imagine, before we see sunnies, shiites, and kurds all chanting "death to America!"

It warms your heart, doesn't it?
