perfect diet lifestyle:
1) Eat a variety of foods, including meats, fruits, veggies, whole grains, beans, nuts and plenty of water.
2) Don't consume more calories than you burn doing physical activity.
3) Get adequate sleep.

THAT'S IT!!!! IT IS NOT HARD, PEOPLE!!!!!

^ That's great for someone who is already at their target weight, but it isn't going to do shit for someone who made the mistake of putting on a few extra pounds. Congratulations on missing the point of the thread though.

at 15.5% body fat (or however lean she actually is) the amount of each macro-nutrient is going to become increasingly important...not just calories in vs. calories out

Wrong. Absolutely wrong.

#2 says, "Don't consume more calories than you burn doing physical activity."
... as in, consuming fewer calories than you burn doing physical activity is okay, if necessary.
Once a fattie loses the weight, ALL THEY SHOULD DO is to allow themselves more calories ONLY TO THE POINT that #2 is still being followed. In other words, fewer calories than you burn, or an equal amount of calories as you burn is okay, more calories than you burn is not.... but #1, #2, and #3 must still be followed. Lifestyle, not diet.

"aaaaaaaaaaaand exercise."
I mentioned "physical activity", but that should be a given -- it is not "on a menu"....
I contend that food and sleep is just as important as physical activity. (not necessarily exercise, either.)

Lucy

I'm also still wondering why you're bothering with a body part split routine? Are you training for some kind of show?

"I am a lot more alert when in ketosis, and have never had any problems with weakness"

same for me. in ketosis, I felt more alert, slept soundly, and could wake up after 5-6 hours of sleep feeling wide awake and fully rested. I actually felt healthier on carbohydrate restriction, but the food limitations and reduced lifting and running capacity suck.

ketosis will make you appear semi-drunk on a breathalyzer as well. the substance you smell on your breath is acetone, and it will give a false positive for alcohol on many breathalyzers. it's a good think to know if you ever go out drinking. faster alcohol metabolism from dieting and sugar-free mixers combined with acetone on your breath could easily give a false positive after one or two drinks. If you're ever pulled over in this situation, insist on a blood test instead.

Quote :
"Some medical resources regard ketosis as a physiological state associated with chronic starvation. Some clinicians regard ketosis as a crisis reaction of the body due to a lack of carbohydrates in the diet and consider it a dangerous and potentially life-threatening state that stresses the liver and causes destruction of muscle tissues[8][9][10]. It should be remembered from the above discussion that ketogenesis does not destroy muscle tissue. Ketogenesis can occur solely from the byproduct of fat degradation: acetyl-CoA. Ketosis, which is accompanied by glycogenesis (the creation of denovo glucose from amino acids), is the specific state with which clinicians are concerned.

The anti-ketosis conclusions have been challenged by a number of doctors and adherents of low-carbohydrate diets, who dispute assertions that the body has a preference for glucose and that there are dangers associated with ketosis.[11][12][13]"

carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. you will die if you don't get adequate amounts of two of them for extended amounts of time.

[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 12:28 PM. Reason : the other is emphasized by the medical community as somehow being necessary.]

step 1. stop drinking sugary drinks, switch to water instead
step 2. eat less (also think about dropping preservatives and additives from your diet)
step 3. excercise more

1) I don't drink sugary drinks at all. Water, coffee, green tea and wine (okay, wine has sugar, but I'm not dropping that).
2) I eat 1,200 - 1,500 calories per day, all whole foods. But is 1,100 calories enough?
3) I work out 2 hours a day. Should I really do more?

it sounds like you're doing WAY too much volume on a body part split ESPECIALLY if you're eating under maintenance to promote weight loss

you don't need to exercise for 2 hours EVERY day of the week, regardless of how strenuous you think it is

if you actually want to hear more you can PM me, otherwise good luck to you (I'm not saying your setup won't work, I just don't think it's optimal)

the good thing about my diet is all it takes is like 1 or 2 less cookies a day, 1 or 2 less sodas a day, 1 less oatmeal creme pie a day, and smaller portions

low end of that is 600 less calories a day or 4200 a week which is over a pound. couple that with eating better foods and even a tiny bit of exercise and thats 2+ pounds a week

there's always a bunch of scrawny motherfuckers hating on bodypart splits every time a thread like this gets made. they also think they can give you better advice - without asking you the first question - than your trainer did after probably subjecting you to an initial consultation and questions during previous training sessions.

I actually like to get 2 hours of exercise each day because I tend to have a lot of energy and exercise helps me burn off nervous energy. Thus, I get better sleep.

I used to run marathons though, so I'm just kind of used to longer workouts. Perhaps I could stand to cut back on the weights?
