You have to specifically choose to install Rosetta, it's one of the "Customize" options or something. But it's there.8/28/2009 12:50:11 PM |

i was on my balcony at the time they came by and didn't hear the knock. they couldn't leave it at the office apparently so unless the re-attempt request works today (very doubtful) i'll have to drive 20-25 minutes to the other side of raleigh to pick it up or wait until monday.
this is the same delivery company that at my last apartment they took a brand new in-box $90 chair and threw it out of the back of the truck onto concrete (witnessed). 8/28/2009 4:01:39 PM |

Personally, I can't stand using OS X on my girlfriend's mini, but I rarely use it and only then to fix something for her (generally). I'm not sure how I'd like using it if I actually customized whatever I wanted and got a little more used to it. I'll probably get a 17" macbook pro here pretty soon - mostly because it's on par with other higher end laptops, and one of the only ones I can find with a 1920x1200 resolution. I intend to partition/install Win 7 on it when I get it though, as one of its primary uses will be programming for work.8/28/2009 4:05:32 PM |

uhhh, system files you don't need, printer drivers you don't use, and PowerPC components of most Applications.
Just got through with my install. It took 52 minutes on my 2008 MacBook Pro (2.2GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB 667) Here my before/after stats
10.5 10.6 Free space 68.5GB 82.4GB - gained 13.9GB Shutdown time 6s 4s Startup: - to Apple 12s 11s - to blue 37 43 - to desktop 66 46 - menu bar 76 56 - finder 86 64 - menu apps 90 76 - with several Startup apps, gain 14s
I'm loving the updates to Expose. It looks fantastic when you go into expose, and the Dock Expose is great. I love the brighter blue outline, and the window tiling seems to be more organized into more of a grid instead of random like before, and it's fast as shit.
There's a new option in System Preference > Dock to "minimize windows into Application icon", instead of minimizing windows down in the Stack area. This is great so you can minimize certain windows (like extra Safari windows) without cluttering up the Dock. But also great is in Expose, these minimized windows show up as smaller thumbnails at the bottom of the screen.
I was fooling around with the QuickTime screen recording feature (i've used 3rd party apps before, but it always seems inconvenient) and realized with screen recording and auto-upload to YouTube, this is a great way to do fast and easy demos or tutorials. For example, I often write out emails with lots of embedded screenshots to my grandfather if he needs to do something with his Mac - instead, i could just record a quick demo of me doing the same thing, then send him the URL.
The only Application incompatibility I see so far is iStat Menu, so I lost my CPU and network monitors in the menubar, and the iState date/time for now.
overall, everything feels fast and clean8/28/2009 9:59:42 PM |

I never really thought that expose was that hard to use to begin with, just a simple swipe down with 4 fingers and all your windows come up, move the mouse over the one you want and swipe back up8/29/2009 6:10:41 PM |

OS X shuts down so fast. The power is usually off by the time I stand up from the chair and lean down to flip the switch on the power strip. Compare this to my relatively new Dell Laptop at work that probably takes somewhere close to 2 minutes to power off. 8/29/2009 6:43:19 PM |

^^ i generally use the hot-corners to activate expose and Spaces (upper right - all windows, lower right - desktop, upper left - Spaces, lower left - Application windows). I always do that when using an external mouse, and even with the touchpad, given how big it is, it's still easy to get to the corners with a quick swipe.
But w/r/t the 4-finger swiping..... I thought I read that all MB and MBPs that supported multi-touch were going to get the 3 and 4-finger features. My 2008 MPB has multi-touch (I use 2-finger gestures all the time), but after the upgrade I don't get any additional options in the Trackpad preferences.... 8/29/2009 7:55:07 PM |

so what's the best way to backup your data to prepare for a total format and install of snow leopard?
in past years ive just backed up my home folder and stuff to an external drive. But now with Leopard i have been using time machine and was wondering if it's easy to restore my data using that? im not interested in restoring the OS files (obviously) but mp3s, pictures, etc would be great. 8/31/2009 2:34:18 PM |
Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
^very easy to do if you have time machine setup. You can select what files to restore from AFTER you install the OS. The other option is to restore from a time machine back up but then that would include your OS files as well.
Use migration assistant after you get snow leopard installed 8/31/2009 3:22:49 PM |
moron All American 34198 Posts user info edit post |
^ yep
^^ assuming your time machine backup is a seperate drive, just wipe your main drive (NOT your time machine drive), install Snow Leopard. When Snow Leopard comes up for the first time, it asks if you want to migrate from another computer, or a time machine backup, just choose the time machine backup, and voila... an hour or so later (depending on how many apps/files you have) and your computer is exactly how you left it. 8/31/2009 4:14:52 PM |

Found out why Saft won't load in SL. Safari is 64-bit and Saft is 32-bit. Unless Saft is recompiled in 64-bit then I would have to run Safari in 32-bit compatibility mode 9/1/2009 9:29:04 AM |

Is snow leopard like windows in that it doesn't matter what disc you use to install it as long as you use your product key? Does upgrading to snow leopard from leopard even require entering a product key? Long story short, I pre-ordered under the $9.99 up to date program and due to post office screw ups its going to be another two weeks at least before my disc gets here so I'm curious if I can just use someone else's disc. 9/1/2009 11:43:35 PM |
agentlion All American 13936 Posts user info edit post |
there are no product keys or CD keys. The installation doesn't phone-home. All Snow Leopard discs are the same (upgrade, retail, OEM, whatever). You can get the $10 upgrade disc and install it on as many Macs as you want, doing upgrades or clean installs 9/1/2009 11:56:57 PM |

the only OSes that have a product key are the server editions of OS X, and it searches around your network to see if it can find a duplicate key anywhere 9/2/2009 3:22:57 AM |

Finally got around to updating both my macs tonight. Seems a bit peppier, but that could just be the fresh install of anything. The Macbook hadn't been formatted since Leopard was released, and for some reason I wasn't able to upgrade to the latest 10.5.6 (? I think) for the last few months. It's nice to be up to date again.
As a sidenote (kinda) I was surprised that my bluetooth keyboard stayed synced with my Mac Mini throughout the HDD format and OS install. I guess it stores that pairing somewhere in the hardware of the Mini itself rather than on the HDD somewhere. 9/3/2009 4:34:03 AM |
