This is the type of movie that would actually make good use of the 40+ foot screen, earthquake inducing sound systems, and reclining seats with 64 oz cup holders. Forget how good the movie will be. I will show up, just for the hype.

With snobby critics writing reviews like this--no doubt while staring down their noses--I consider this movie a must-see:

Quote :
"A cartoonish symphony of muscles, bullets, tattoos and cigars, 'The Expendables' is so determinedly old-school that its brisk action and bracing explosions take place not in the real world but on a mythical South American island named Vilena."

Quote :
"With its roster of action stars listed on posters like a high-powered team of urologists — 'Stallone, Statham, Li, Lundgren, Couture, Austin, Crews and Rourke' — 'The Expendables' is also a place where lines like 'Friends don't let friends die alone' and 'Don't talk to me, cockroach' can find a happy home."

^ Maybe you're right. I guess you could just skip this movie and pop your copy of Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood into the DVD player.

what the fuck are you even saying.

that post was not making any kind of comment on the expendables.

i was saying those quotes you've posted don't even really seem to be passing judgement, and could easily be from a positive review (I have not clicked the link).

especially the top one.

^ You do realize that "cartoonish" in the context above is a pejorative, yes? If I called you cartoonish, would you consider it high praise?

cartoonish is a great description for this movie; anyone that expected anything more from a cheesy action movie from this will be sorely dissapointed.

With that being said, my wife and I went to see it last night and were thoroughly entertained.

yeah i'd rather see them than people like couture, crews, and stone cold, but i guess maybe salaries were an issue. seeing bruce willis, stallone, and the governator on screen together should be fucking awesome though

I believe I remember hearing that Van Damme, Snipes, and Segal were all approached but declined. I think Van Damme thought he was going to be made fun of or something to that effect. I'm thinking maybe Terry Crews, Randy Couture, and maybe Stone Cold were 2nd options.

just got back from 9:40pm showing at Southpoint.

Is it bad to call this movie "hilarious"? I loved it, but I was laughing throughout.

Knew the cheesy-ness was coming, but was blown away by the sheer awesome-ness of the cheesy-ness.

I think.

action scenes were awesome, the rest of the movie was rather meh. I feel like it could have been 30 minutes shorter and I would have been more pleased.

i didn't pay the 6 bucks or whatever to listen to a bunch of action stars talk about their pretend feelings. they aren't action stars because they're good at showing compassion or sadness, but rather badassness.

^they just need a few emotional scenes to set up/as motivation for the awesome action scenes

i was disappointed in Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis' screentime and non-participation in the action

imo, it was hard to follow the action at the end beginning from the tunnel stuff. too much shaky cam, too choppy. please to let the camera stay on someone for more than 1/2 a punch and get some damn lights on the people.

the dockside scene was awesome!

I liked the back story scenes as well as the action. The action was unbelievable, especially everything with the AA12. God.

I agree, they fucked up the action scenes. With the caliber of these actors they should've just put the camera on a tripod and let us enjoy it. Hell they had Couture vs Stone Cold, they didn't need a vibrating tumble cam to show two professional fighters going at it.

I wish The Russian and Rocky had another big fight, instead of the Russian vs Jet Li. I felt Jet Li didn't get that good of screen time for his caliber of fighting skills, but you couldn't tell what was going on anyway with everyone wearing the same blackops outfits and being of similar build.

Overall, this was about the best action movie I've ever watched.

The best part of this movie was when Gunner betrayed them and I yelled out "FUCK YOU, DOLPH guhLUNDGREN!"

I think I had the perfect BAC for this movie.

Spoiler..

They should of had Jet Li's main fight be with Gary Daniels. I know he fought Daniels later but it was short. He ended up getting Jason Stathem fighting with him against Daniels.

"Stallone: Van Damme refused to lose to Li in 'Expendables' fight
Aug. 17, 2010, 12:07 PM EST
WENN

Jean-Claude Van Damme refused to appear in Sylvester Stallone's all-star action film "The Expendables" because he would have to lose a fight to Jet Li.

Stallone corralled a hitlist of Hollywood hard men to appear in the film, but "Universal Soldier" star Van Damme turned him down, because the Belgian martial arts expert failed to get the movie's satirical undertones.

Stallone told Britain's Sunday Times, "I wanted to set Jean-Claude against Jet Li, but he didn't want to lose to Jet.

"He didn't think that was cool. But that's why it would be cool, to have Jean-Claude beaten by the other man. Hey, they could have a rematch. But Steven Seagal and Van Damme, they weren't really into our gallows humor."

Van Damme may well be regretting his decision to star alongside Stallone, Jason Statham, Li, Dolph Lundgren and Mickey Rourke in "The Expendables" -- the movie shot to number one at the weekend box office."

i wonder if van damme was supposed to be one of the characters in the movie, or if stallone was planning on writing a part for him. i can't really picture him being any of the guys in the production movie

Probably not too hard to write someone in:

"Here, take these roids, hold this gun and say these one liners"

Not exactly Daniel Day Lewis type stuff

"In a riveting interview it was revealed that the original cut of The Expendables featured Chuck Norris playing the part of the entire Expendables team. "We couldn't finish shooting, because the film canisters kept catching on fire," Stallone explained. "We decided to recast the roles using the new list of actors because the MPAA Ratings Board kept receiving death threats... from Chuck Norris."

Mr. Norris could not be reached for comment. He reaches for you."

I'm kind of amazed how much everyone in this thread liked it, I saw it last night and the only way I could describe it is "aggressively uncool." I thought all the fist pumps and self-laughing at the quips was really really uncomfortable. See this movie if you love douche chills.

well I'm glad stallone had the same thought as me and went after seagal and van damme, it's a shame van damme couldn't grasp what the movie was about, seagal might be kind of fat now though and past his prime, and I think norris is still in great shape and he seemed like he would have been a great fit for the movie, oh well

mark berger (movie critic) had a good point on the radio today that guys like van damme and norris were always leading actors, never supporting. so even though they're pretty much washed up, their acting histories pretty much dictate that it's all or nothing. no bit parts allowed

I'm not sure seagal really works with the military type anyway, he's only good in slower paced movies when he can walk in to some place unarmed, talk a little big and then have people attack him

Thought the movie was very good. I agree the action scenes could have been left to a more simplistic action sequence so we could enjoy the fighting/action. I am glad Seagal was not in movie, he is not the military style of actor. Van Damme would have been intersting, but since he punked out, oh well.

I enjoyed Crews and Austin roles.

One of the best Summer movies I have seen a long time.

Not big fan of the cuts every half second during the big fight scenes

I know they need some camera magic to make these old guys look good, but that was a bit much
