looks like raleigh may be turning into or already is a glorified HOA.

Quote : | "See the short driveway pic above. Please explain to me how you'd deal with 4 motorcycles, 2 cars, 1 extended cab long bed truck and a 7x16 trailer in that situation, and that's if we don't get a roommate. Guess we'll just pave the whole damn back yard because of some new nanny state ordinance.
In addition, some people keep projects in their garage. Try to find a reasonably priced starter home (minimum 2br 1ba 900sqft) with a 3+ car garage and you will experience much frustration." |
To answer your first question, I personally don't have that many vehicles. And if I did, I would get a place that could accommodate them. If I couldn't afford/find such a place, i'd sacrifice some of those vehicles. But, that's me.
Regarding garage workshops: That's awesome, my garage is used for gym equipment. But that is a choice I make. I don't need to use my garage for my car, so I get to use it for other stuff. If I had to choose between an extra vehicle or my garage-gym, I'm not sure which I would choose, but i'd pick between them.
The article doesn't say anything about the backyard. It specifically, and consistently, mentions the front yard. Again, your reading comprehension skills are suspect.
Quote : | "Well, it's pretty much understood that it practically limits you because nobody is going to play musical cars. That's fucking retarded. It wouldn't even be an option for me--I'd sell my house and move outside of Raleigh city limits (if I lived in Raleigh and this got passed)." |
It's not what she was talking about. She specifically said several times that "you could only have two vehicles." Which was wrong. When I pointed that out, she brought up the musical car shit. which, inferred or not, is not the same as "you can only have two vehicles."
As far as "nobody is going to play musical cars": Nobody wants to play musical cars. I did it for a few years and it really wasn't that big of a deal. We had 5 cars in my parents' driveway when I was in highschool. We adjusted to it. We made sure the car of the person who left earliest was either in the back or nobody was blocking them in, keys were always left where everyone could get to them, etc. There are ways to deal with it. I'm not saying it's not a bit of a hassel or not less than ideal, but it's not the end of the world. When shopping for a house, parking and parking needs are something to consider. If that means you don't live in Raleigh, then you made the right call. Living in a city that can't meet your parking needs is retarded.
We live in a VERY fast growing area. It's only my opinion; but considering the people moving to the area, I don't see front-yard parking being widely acceptable around here much longer regardless of this ordinance.7/26/2009 8:42:00 PM |

Exactly.

exactly, but it sucks big time if you already have a house in that city, in a place you ensured would be OK when you bought. it's absurd to have an ordinance like this across an entire city.
Quote : | "We live in a VERY fast growing area. It's only my opinion; but considering the people moving to the area, I don't see front-yard parking being widely acceptable around here much longer regardless of this ordinance. " |
I also find front yard parking to be unacceptable in most places. It generally looks like fucking Sanford & Son. What about people like me, though? I don't have a bunch of junky shit sitting around, and it's all on the parking pad that I had paved beside my driveway when I bought my house. I made sure to buy a house in a place without a HOA, because I didn't want people bothering the shit out of me over stuff that isn't any of their business (there is a neighborhood covenant that covers a few reasonable things like no chain-link fences, no fencing in your FRONT yard, no junk cars sitting in the yard, etc...generally not intrusive or anything that a reasonable, non-trashy person would have a problem with).
However, while I don't have anything parked in the yard, and my parking space isn't an unallowable size percentage relative to my lawn, it is above the 330 sq ft allotted. If I lived in the city limits of New Bern, and they enacted a law like Raleigh is talking about, I would put my house up for sale and move immediately.
By the way, isn't this Crowder motherfucker the same one who stopped the Brent Road party, ran all the college students off the street, and did a couple of other screwed up, intrusive things?7/26/2009 11:03:43 PM |

with a stupid ordinance like this, you could buy outside of the city limits, then in a few years get annexed by Raleigh so they can rake in more tax money, and then be double-fucked by not being able to park your toys. 7/27/2009 12:28:38 AM |

You've been to my parents' place.
Because it was 88K when they bought it, and they loved it. Add having two kids and the good schools to the mix...and they bought a house.
You can't live life playing what-if: 'Ok, so in 15-20 years, this city with which we aren't familiar with may decide [feature of the property] is no longer legal. Sorry, seller, we can't deal with that possibility. Thanks for talking with us!'
Annexation is an entirely different matter
^There are parts of Cary that were 'way the fuck out there' 10 and 20 years ago. Same for Raleigh, but move the start and end dates back some.

Oh, no.
They count, b/c their parking area will be considered illegal in at least two ways. And you know they can't park on the street
And at any rate, my point is no less valid: you cannot live life on a what-if basis. I mean, you can, but it's not a life worth living.

Yeah.
We've got a busybody neighbor who hates my mom.
Also, our across-the-street neighbors will be impacted...every single person on both parts of the street will.
You can't use individual 'oh, yall will be fine even if you're illegal' cases as a reason to justify your stance. It's backwards, and you're blaming people for not having a type of foresight and frame of mind that's totally unreasonable. 7/27/2009 12:49:26 AM |

you don't want to do this in most of SW raleigh.
While I could never imagine myself parking on my lawn i don't support such an ordinance.
this may sound silly, but my major compassion is for the people in the hillsborough street surrounding neighborhoods by the fair grounds. during the fair these people often times have people park in their yards as a contribution of industry. this law would prohibit these entrepreneurs from engaging in a profitable economy benefiting business that has much benefit and negligible negative impact.
these people do not deserve to have their lawful businesses rendered impossible.7/27/2009 9:54:04 AM |

My guess is they would issue permits to allow parking for the fair and what not. Hopefully this ordinance won't come to be though and it won't be an issue.
Quote : | "you don't want to do this in most of SW raleigh." |
Where everyone can get to them =/= out in the open for anyone to find.
That being said, I grew up in a neighborhood that was worse than I've ever seen SW Raleigh (firetrucks didn't come into the neighborhood w/o a police escort). And keys were left out all the time. In the 7yrs I lived in SW Raleigh, I left my keys on the coffee table pretty much every night. SW Raleigh isn't the most ideal place (and has gotten worse in recent yrs), but it's not THAT bad.7/27/2009 12:21:46 PM |

First off, under most circumstances I think parking in the front lawn (long term) just looks bad. However, it's not the city council's place to tell people what to do with their property. If you live in a HOA too bad, but if you don't this is bullshit.
Quote : | "I have probably veto'd 40+ houses in my house search due to poor or PITA parking. I guess I never once considered parking in the lawn. Parking in the back yard had crossed my mind a couple times......" |
I've been looking for a place to move (for myself and 2 friends) for almost two months (and thankfully found a place last week). However, while searching parking space was one of my concerns and many nice houses I veto'd for the same reason as Quinn. I have two cars and each of my roommates has one. The place I'm moving into soon has a two car garage. I plan on keeping my good car in the garage. My older car that I hardly ever use will be parked on the street, and probably with a car cover on it. However, parking is only allowed one side of the street so people might be annoyed by that. Tough titty.7/27/2009 2:16:07 PM |

I'm not typically a fan of cars being parked in yards, but this is a bit excessive. I'm about to move into a place off Lineberry, and the HOA doesn't allow parking on the street or in the yard. Dealing with the pissy HOA (and not having enough parking if we ever want to have a guest over) is something I knew I'd have to deal with when I signed the lease. 7/27/2009 2:52:01 PM |

this is bs! you should be able to do whatever you want if you own the land unless you have an HOA! that is what my parents love about our neighborhood, is that they could paint thier house pink and purple polka dotted if they wanted to.
I think that parking on the street is a bigger pain than people parked in thier yards. but what does it matter what I say. It's thier damn property!!! 7/28/2009 12:35:39 AM |

Tyranny of the lawn clones. Instead of trying to induce govt to abuse it's power, why not get your FOX-mates to go around and hang aposthetic admonitions on the side-mirrors of the heathens?
If you're gonna do it, why not just have a nice non-intrusive property tax rider? then the rentors, like the Dennings, will encourage their renters to not park in the yard. Take the proceeds from the new tax and buy some flamingoes.
