I like Fat Tire and will drink it when it's on tap, but I don't really go bat shit for it. Sweetwater on the other hand...well every time I pass through Greensboro I have to hit up a HT and buy at least a case.

PS: I hear Trippel is quite tasty.

Oh shit, I forgot about that in my list from above. Fat Tire is on a different plane from Yuengling. I'm wondering if you've even tried it.

There was also a brief period where Steel Reserve was getting a lot of love too.

Fat Tire is just a popular fad beer, it's okay but nothing to write home about in my opinion. And I feel like I have a valid opinion on this topic because I've tasted hundreds of beers and have 200+ of the bottles to prove it

I like New Belgium's wheat beer better...the name escapes me though.

Yeah, b/c it was 6.0% alcohol and cheap as hell. Nobody liked it for the taste.

Manny's Pale Ale is better than Fat Tire any day.

and Rainier Beer in a 16 oz tallboy is better than any ale in the summer when it's 90 degrees.

It's also worth noting that I'd rather support local craft breweries than ones outside of this region.

Aviator, Foothills, Big Boss, French Broad, Highland, and Duck-Rabbit all make good shit.

^Big Boss Bad Penny is one of my favorites right now. I liked their Big Operator a lot, but its a seasonal and isn't around right now.

i mean, i feel that most times with beer you get what you pay for. steel reserve is only marginally potable until you remember how much you paid for it, then it suddenly tastes a lot better.

I live in Pennsylvania and trust me that's no excuse for liking Yuengling

They do make a porter that's decent, though (much better than their lager) -- i kinda wish they'd stop making the lager and just make the porter

That's crazy talk, Foothills is arguably the best brewery in NC (and they have medals from the Great American Beer Festival to prove it). Their hefeweizen and pilsner are not really my cup of tea, but the rest of their offerings range from solid to excellent.

I like red oak, but they only make 3 styles (and that is if they still make that cidar... don't know if they do)- if they had more, I think they could be considered the best

I like Foothills stuff (what I've had at the RBC center was damn tasty), but I wouldn't use the GABF to vouch for quality. fwiw Miller Geniune Draft has won awards there and that is about as shitty as beer gets.

^um... so you've never tried any DuckRabbit stuff? or Big boss? Red Oak is nice and all, but c'mon..

New Belgium Skinny Dip > Fat Tire IMHNBSO

That being said, if you like it . . . drink it. If you limit yourself to "in" beers (or anything for that matter) based on other peoples equally unqualified opinions then you miss the whole point of drinking beer.

^^i personally like their two big beers better than any of that other stuff

and yes, i've had all those (and many other NC brews)- I like some of Big Boss's stuff (I love going to Horniblows), and Duck Rabbit is alright in my opinion.... this is all just IMO stuff

Foothills makes some really good beers. i think i prefer Highland Brewery, though. Duck Rabbit is probably 3rd in the state for me, although their brown ale is top notch.

I'm not saying the GABF is the ultimate arbiter of how good a beer is, but I'm pretty sure MGD won in the adjunct lager category which is a shit show in general so I wouldn't hold that against them.

And Red Oak is not even close to the best brewery in the state, it's OK but I would put at least 10 breweries ahead of them.

everyone has their own taste... you all need to get over yourselves

I dont prefer most IPAs, but I'm not gonna come in here and say "your foothills IPA is bitter dog piss"

I like darker beers with a little sweetness to them, so sue me

I've had 1000's of different types of beers (been on many tours, been to many tastings and festivals, and Im almost done with my 3rd plate at the saucer)- I've tried alot of these things... they werent for me, but that doesn't mean that they are "shit"

if they were "shit" then no one would by them and you wouldn't see them anymore. Red Oak is a very popular beer, as is #9 despite what you may think about it. The only reason you have seen less red oak around is because they had to raise the price of their beer to offset the brewery expansions/updates, not because it is "a crap beer"

i say fuck all you fat tire beer snobs

^I agree with your statement about fat tire/yeungling btw

Im gonna throw in Carolina Beer Company (aka carolina Blonde) for names of local brewers (not the same as carolina brewing company (aka carolina pale ale)

carolina blonde is garbage but their Cottonwood Endo (IPA) is prob one of my favorite beers
