Yeah they've got some overpriced dreck on there too. Don't get me started on how much some of these guys are trying to pawn off their fixies. 8/4/2009 10:33:45 AM |

You mean you don't think $375 is a fair price for a "vintage Huffy" converted to a hipstermobile? Yer just so way harsh there, Cricket. 8/5/2009 12:32:36 PM |

Most people in this thread seem to feel that you have to be a hipster in order to ride a fixed gear, and that if you ride a ride a fixed gear it automatically makes you into a hipster bitch so they refuse to do so.. 8/5/2009 7:51:50 PM |

No, that isn't what people think at all, you have the inverse of this. The people that love to ride a fixie/ss seemed to be hipsters or fanbois and those that don't are looked at like we're weirdos or somehow missing the holiness that is a fixie by those that do.
I'm not even in the best of shape and I'd love for one of you to come ride the CSH metric with me on Saturday. It's 60 miles and about 4000 ft of climbing and we'll average 20mph. I've been on that ride only once where a guy was riding a fixie. His legs are thunderous tree trunks and the guy is a tremendous cyclist. Oh yeah, he also ended up going down on Lystra Rd at about 40mph to the tune of some seriously nasty road rash, a banged up bike, and two other guys went down trying to avoid him with one fracturing a collar bone.

none of my sentiment was towards the people that ride fixed gears for short distances or on level terrain, i understand they are fun, lightweight, and can be fast.
in terms of being practical for all terrain and all distances, fixed gears means you are intentionally making it difficult for yourself as it's extremely inefficient... it just doesn't make much sense. if being illogical for the sake of being sentimental is hip or trendy, then so be it. it just looks like a kid riding his bike in the driveway and highly unintelligent as i pass you biking up the hill.
best bet, get a road bike for your daily AND get a fixie for the times you just want to have fun short stints on the weekends 8/6/2009 3:06:40 AM |

i picked up a Schwinn Madison off craigslist yesterday. its a pretty cool bike:
single speed steel frame track bike w/ flip flop hub. I went on a 8 mile ride this morning to break 'er in. Felt great and was more effecient than i thought it'd be as a SS. i really didnt miss gears at all. it felt smooth and fast. when in encountered hill i just stood up and hammered 'em out.
then this afternoon my curiosity got the best of me and i flipped the rear wheel to fixed gear mode. man that is crazy. its really fun, but its amazing how much you coast and on't realize it. even getting on the bike and starting out and stopping and getting off takes conscious effort. i went down a slight hill at a decent clip and instinctively went to coast mode and it almost threw me off the seat. ha it is fun though and i can't wait to go practice and figure it out more. 8/22/2009 11:23:42 PM |

yesterday i commuted to work via bike and commuter rail.
first i biked about 4.5 miles from my house through downtown Boston to the big train station. from there i took the commuter rail to a station about 5 miles from my work. Its nice up there because its all rolling winding hills in the forest. a nice little ride. i took a shower at work and was good to go. and of course did the same back.
it worked out really well, but it was a bit time consuming. my ultimate goal is to bike the whole thing, thats 21 miles each way through the hills on a single speed...
i'm still lusting after a Surly CrossCheck... itd be the perfect do-all bike. i could slap fenders, big tires, and a rack on it and commute through the winter. ha ha ha 9/2/2009 8:32:46 PM |

i've got a 32 mile trip to work, each way. mostly flat on a trail that follows along a lakeside and a river. except for a couple hills on either end. I live on a ridge, so the last 2 miles home is a workout.
showers at work are a necessity.
most of the time, though, i bike to a vanpool or bus to travel the majority of the way in to work. so I get about 30-40 mi / day depending on how i break it up. 9/3/2009 12:02:34 AM |

You are so right. I've got one and it makes commuting a lot of fun. The thing is surprisingly fast and nimble -- even when it's weighed down with a rack, fenders, etc. They're not really cheap, but def. worth the investment.9/3/2009 11:29:13 AM |

I did the 5mi->train->5mi to work today and then rode the whole 25.5 miles home on my trusty steel frame single speed. i made it! not so bad either really. 9/9/2009 9:43:17 PM |
