The more I look back on it, I feel that college is completely worthless. Everything I needed to know for this job I learned on the job in the first 2 weeks.

All $80k in tuition and a degrees gets you is a first interview.

That's why you don't spend 80K on a degree.

I didn't say the college guaranteed it, I just said they make it seem like you are guaranteed a job

Yeah, i hear you.

But I'm not seeing any evidence of that.

maybe you could show me where they even remotely imply that?

"Have you heard the joke about the new grad suing her college because she can't find a job? There's a good chance you have. First reported by the New York Post, the story gained juice last week when it was picked up by New York's TV stations and by CNN's Prime News, where anchor Mike Galanos shook his head in amusement and told viewers, "I don't see how this one can be legit." The Onion satirized it; countless blogs chimed in to label Trina Thompson, the 27-year-old who filed the lawsuit, an idiot or worse; and even the Chronicle of Higher Education, a publication not known for its sense of humor, got in its digs.

But the more you know about Thompson and the school she's suing, the more likely it is that you might start thinking that whatever her chances of winning in court, she's right. The story of Thompson's suit isn't a one-liner about a grad too naive to know that graduating from college doesn't guarantee a job. It's a story about what "college" means and about marginal, for-profit "colleges" that squeeze four years of fees from their students and leave them with all the debt and little of the education or prospects that they counted on.

Trina Thompson's alma mater, Monroe College, is well-known to New York City commuters, thanks to glossy ads that festoon the insides (and sometimes the outside) of many subway cars. It has less of a presence, however, outside the New York public transit system. You will not find it in, say, the U.S. News list of 1,400 colleges. You will not find its average SAT scores listed on its Web site or anywhere else (they're not required for admission), nor will you find lists of publications by the scholars on its faculty..."

yeah that's interesting and all, but...

"2.7 GPA"

i can't get past that.

if the school is all that shitty and weak, then you should at least be able to maintain an overall 3.75 or more.

maybe the school will take almost anyone, but they apparently dont pass out "A"s to every slacker who tries to slide their way through.

if you're going to a "marginal, for profit" college, that doesn't have the academic reputation like a Columbia or SUNY does ... then you damn well better step up and compete with your peers to get those A's

ESPECIALLY if you hope to land a job in the current market.

sorry, if i dont have a whole lot of sympathy.

she's obviously not a genius or she wouldn't be going there in the first place, but that's who the school caters to it and it shouldn't be hard to see that it misleads them into thinking that their "education" will help them further themselves far more than it actually will--anyone who's seen a commerical for miller-motte college or strayer university knows the spiel

i'm sure it's not a joke for people who go there, get serious, and apply themselves to take meaningful courses and do well in them. i'm sure they can go on to get and hold a professional position after graduation.

because not everyone is eligble or able to go to a traditional university. plenty of people desire a 4-year-degree, but can not for a variety of reasons get accepted into a traditional college or university

still, these people need to know there isnt any university career center that's going to hold your hand and spoonfeed you through job interviews, so no matter where you go, you're still on your own.

BUT...

I will admit that after read the entire article, the author makes a persuasive case that the College is essentially a vocational school dishonestly repackaged as a liberal arts college, so they can charge more for it, provide less, and not be accountable for the job placement criteria that a trade school would.

the problem with is that this requires either a conspiracy or gross negligence on the part of the national higher education accrediting system, which accredits all four-year colleges and universities in the country.

I also admit that i would never recommend anyone go to such a for-profit college, and i would actively try to block my kid from doing so if (s)he became determined to go to such a college
