I don't think it's okay not to tip when waitstaff get paid below minimum wage. For bad/wretched service I'd tip about ten per cent but usually I go about twenty.

just because the restaurant industry decides to screw their employees doesn't mean I have to make up for it. if you have average service, you get an average tip; above average service then above average tip; below average service, then below average tip. if you completely suck, you don't get shit; that's how it works. It is a servers CHOICE on how to serve and he/she knows the consequences. I don't feel obligated to support their lifestyle nor do I feel obligated to inflate their tip for no reason at all.

i don't understand rewarding poor service. most waiters/waitresses are raking in the money (relative to people in similar unskilled positions). not getting a tip from a few people because they fucked up won't hurt them. if they keep getting stiffed to the point that it's significantly affecting their income, then maybe they should find a new line of work.[Edited on August 4, 2009 at 11:23 AM. I agree with Sayer on that one...its basic business sense

i guess if the chef/cook fucks up your order, you should take it out on the waiter/waitress]

^you seem to have a reading disability. we are talking about a server's SERVICE.

who is we? plenty of people in this thread are talking about if their "experience" is badbesides, some people would define poor service as going some place really really crowded and then being disappointed that their server can't check on them every 2-3 minutes[Edited on August 4, 2009 at 11:47 AM. I can't believe I'm agreeing with TreeTwista10 on something, this maybe a first in human history Bad "experience" and bad "service" are two very different things that many people lump together for some reason.

i agree, problems in the kitchen aren't the waiter's fault. that's why i clarified in my first post that these things were in fact the waiter's fault.

I've worked in the food industry before. But I still have high standards of service and deal out the proper consequences when needed. An no one expects a drink refill every 20 seconds. It's the 5 minutes of bone dry glass that pisses people off. You're not a good server if you're not at least observing each of your tables everytime you're on the floor and being on the floor constantly. I can't tell you the number of times I've been at a place where the server hasn't been by my table for 5-10 minutes, while glasses are empty, comes to the table next to ours and doesn't even observe our table. Be on top of the game; observe your tables, if you see a need, address it then. If you're truly too busy to get to your tables that often, then that's your problem, take it up with a manager.

Tipping, by definition, is money given to server/attendant/whoever at the discretion of the tipper for a job well done. It's assumed, at least in our society, that one should almost always tip, but that doesn't mean it's required. I would say that it's acceptable not to in extreme cases, but also in poor form.

I've had service so bad on two occasions that I've walked out without paying. Sometimes just stiffing them on the tip isn't enough.
