^^$$? i'll assume a 24v since it's a quad cab? what trans?
the 03 above looks decent too. probably could do better on the price i'm sure with the miles and being 2wd. i'd be curious on its history for those miles as well. like that ford the other day, i'll bet this too was a hotshotter of some variety. i wouldn't be too scared of the miles at all assuming good service history. the engine speaks for itself, and that g56 trans/aam axle are more than up to the task of going well in excess of ~400k too.
worst thing you might set some cash aside for would be a good fuel system. the stock lift pumps and the fuel lines/fittings are marginal at best. the cp3 injection pump is adequate if it's well supplied, and unlike the vp44's in the previous gen. trucks it's very rarely affected by a bad/underperforming lift pump. there was a supposed "fix" released by cummins/dodge a few years ago that mounts a new lift pump in the tank instead of on the engine, but supposedly that configuration hasn't really proven to be any better. a FASS setup or the like doesn't cost any significant amount more than oem stuff, anyway.
if you end up with a manual and when the time comes (if not before), do yourself a favor and put a GOOD clutch in. they're not cheap, but it's money well spent in the long run imo. it's decidedly the weak point in that drivetrain, especially when you start adding more power. even a stock cummins is pretty brutal on one with the short powerband/low rpm power. 10/31/2009 10:36:54 PM |

^ I am not looking for a manual trans truck at all. Maybe I missed something, but all the 99-02 Dodges I have been looking at have been 24v.
I have a lead on a really clean, well optioned 99 Chevy 3500 (yes with the 6.5) but I think honestly it would give me everything I need since I am not really looking for yet another vehicle to modify. Sure I would be better off with a 5.9 Cummins or a 7.3 PSD, but finding a good clean one with a clear history is proving to be tough. 11/1/2009 12:05:38 PM |

^^^well, there were a few rare 98's that has the new body/interior changes yet retained the 12v engine. that's why i said i would ASSume the red on pictured was a 24v since it's obviously a quad cab which didn't come until 98.
imo, not wanting to modify anything is only more reason to stick to the cummins/powerstroke route. even if you could live with the anemic power of the 6.5, there are several reliability related mods you would want to do at the least i'm sure. i'm not saying completely overlook those trucks, they can be had for great deals, it's just the 454 is going to be the better powerplant there by far. i wouldn't bother with anything except the 96+ vortecs though, the power difference over the tbi engines is substantial.

^Pre 98 extended cabs had the old style interior and no back doors. In 98 they went to the "quad cab" with the 2 back doors and updated the dash. The first half of 98 had the new interior and 12v. Second half got the 24v. 11/1/2009 6:33:13 PM |

maybe you can tell me WTF a FASS system is 11/1/2009 9:18:11 PM |
LJTyre Starting Lineup 79 Posts user info edit post |
Definitely if you get a vp44 put a fuel pressure gauge on it. If you catch the tank pump as it's going out you can save the vp44. A FASS (or similar) aftermarket pump and a gauge is the best way to go.
Useless fyi- Dodge called the 2 door extended cab trucks the club cab. The 2 door, 2 little door extended cab trucks the quad cab. The 4 door with 2 little back doors the quad cab. And the new 4 fullsize doors the crew cab. 11/1/2009 9:28:26 PM |

How so? A FASS is prettymuch the standard on VP44 trucks.
For a cheaper variant, you can look at the Airdog setups? 11/2/2009 10:20:45 AM |

For the obvious extra gear, but also I don't think they are prone to the problems that the nv4500s are (loosening nuts on 5th gear and all) 11/3/2009 1:55:41 PM |

well no, i meant my advice is generally relative to higher output vehicles, and not applicable to most whom i talk to.
airdog/injectors/tuner will get you reeaallllyyyyy close to 500 with a commonrail
