Complete side note: Your parents restaurant doesn't happen to be a kosher deli, does it?Because I swear if it was and it was local, I'd keep that place in business myself.

Don't sweat it, a lot of people go to school for 7 years!
8/6/2009 9:02:48 AM

8/6/2009 9:33:55 AM

at first i had a lot of shit talk, but i see some of your problem and how you got where you are.the fact of the matter is things will work out and you shouldn't worry. HOWEVER time for the serious TRUTHa 6th year of school is good enough reason for anyone not to give you a scholarship based on your progress. I know plenty of people who graduated with one degree in 3 to 3.5. I myself received 2 separate degrees and finished in 4years and that final semester was only 12 hours because I needed to be full time. You need to realize that you did a lot to get yourself into this position based on your own habits and not just the depressed semester and switching majors. I hope in the future you pay more attention.

got my fall 05 semester dropped in spring of 2007..made up some crazy story about my gf being preggers and then she had a miscarriage and how i was all depressed and drinkin and shyt..it worked..they may put some requirements on you though...i had to show i was capable of getting previous semesters grades so i had to get atleast a 3.0 that spring semester..pretty simple shyt

i managed to stay afloat all the way up to april of my senior year, when i finally had to start paying stuff with credit cards
8/6/2009 9:54:27 AM
^^^I'm not exactly sure what habits you're referring to. I'm a good student, I don't do any drugs, I rarely get drunk. Switching majors had more to do with taking so long to graduate than the depression, because I took a lot of my major requirements the first two years and none of them count for shit anymore (I was a double major in Stats and Math, took about 30 hours worth of the two combined, and my current major only requires 2 math classes total). I had also almost filled up my free electives by that point so I literally lost those credits as far as requirement filling is concerned.Academic advisers need to stop telling freshmen to take major requirements so soon.

You should sue the school.
8/6/2009 10:35:04 AM
^^ and ^^^Even with two complete years wasted (which is unlikely to be the case since free electives will carry over and basic ed classes (such as PE, etc...) will carry over and since some of your previous major classes would carry over) you still shouldn't be on a 6 year plan. if you realized you were behind you should have committed a better effort to stay afloat. instead of taking 12 hour semesters take 17 or 18. take 7 hours at least during the summer, which is easily accomplished. i am not saying you did anything wrong necessarily, but you definitely didn't do everything right.

I took out a private loan (~$2500) from Sallie Mae my last semester. The interest rate was basically like a decent credit card at the time (8-9% w/cosigner). I understand the economy has changed things since then (harder to find/get private student loans) but it looks like Sallie is still doing them, but now you have to make interest only payments while in school and during 6-month grace period (which may or may not be cheaper than a credit card in the short/long term). Your bank/credit union can probably hook you up with similar type loans; my wife got hooked up with a private student loan through her credit union from a foundation that primarily does scholarships/grants, granted that was a few years ago. The timeline is probably too long from applying to getting $ but I would think worst case scenario you'd have to go through the trouble of getting added back to the classes you need.

I went into the financial aid office today and they said I have to e-mail Rance Jackson...I couldn't even meet with him, I have to e-mail him. I've met him before but never had to ask him for anything...any suggestions from anyone who has dealt with him?
8/6/2009 1:08:11 PM
rance is a pretty reasonable guy; if you give him a decent reason, he'll prolly cut you a break. you have to remember though, that ncsu's goal is to crank out graduates...
8/6/2009 3:00:31 PM
I explained to him I shouldn't be punished just because I was dealing with emotional stress...i also mentioned that i want to graduate this december but i have to pay for it firsthe sent me an e-mail back less than 5 minutes later:Mr. Mazur,Your financial aid has been re-instated for Fall 2009.Regards,Rance JacksonNow I just have to hope I'm awarded my money by Monday afternoon, otherwise my fall registration will be cancelled.
8/6/2009 6:16:19 PM

8/6/2009 6:16:53 PM

I didn't read much of this thread, but are there any classes you can take at Wake Tech or CPCC? Classes cost $129.
8/6/2009 6:34:33 PM
not in religious studies
8/6/2009 6:42:46 PM
Wait, you're getting a degree in religious studies from NCSU? It's not like having or not having the degree will really make a difference in your career prospects anyway.
