when you are a gross, greasy, blob of a woman you are taught to have sex with anything willing. going the opposite route once you find someone willing to stick around can be confusing.

yeah but in order to have sex you have to be that close to someone, close enough to where your bodies are touching just as much if not more than they are during cuddling. sure, sex can be had without feelings, and its good, sometimes great, but im assured it is absolutely amazing once you add the intimacy and love into the mix. idk, its a personal choice. i would just rather find one man eventually and spend forever loving only him

This is not really true. I mean, it's fine if you feel that way -- different strokes for different folks (pun intended,) but clearly sex can be had without intimacy -- people do it all the time.

I put forward to the committee that if this happened, the soap box would not allow it.

I move this motion be seconded.

and i know that sex can be had without intimacy, we've all done it im sure. but im saying that has gotten old, to me at least, and im kinda ready to just date one guy and fall in love eventually etc etc. not that i want to find "the one" now, but being single gets old.

but i have never been in a really long relationship, and you know what they say...its not that i dislike red M&M's but being committed, i have to eat only red M&M's everyday forever, and dammit sometimes i just want a BLUE one!!

I'd imagine that the idea of monogamy is pretty good for disease control. Also helping to control birth in multiple households.

the US isn't purely monogamous anyway. pure monogamy would be one partner for life. we have "serial monogamy" - people have different partners over a lifetime but are loyal to one partner at a time.

I honestly think it mainly comes down to what Willy Nilly said - things are very slow to change. The idea of monogamy is the standard, either from your religious standpoint or 'morals.' Most of the population doesn't care to openly rock the boat. A husband has a mistress? Oh, what's the big deal; it's a secret, yet it's not. But if you're openly dating or with more than one person? Especially as a woman, it's seen as taboo and inappropriate.

Also, here's something else... I feel like what people see growing up affects how they perceive what's right. If you saw your parents divorce because of an affair, I feel like you're going to have a negative opinon of polygamy. (especially if it was a rough split for you or the parent) It may not seem logical, but we all have illogical reactions to certain things.

I don't really understand the insecure part of all this... I can understand jealousy being apart of monogamy and that's why neither person has other partners but I don't think insecurity has to be apart of a monogamous relationship..

For me, I like monogamy because I really don't think I could have sex without some sort of connection -- I've tried it before and I really just can't do it. So to me, monogamy is appealing because I love the feeling of having such a strong connection with one person. Someone I can put all my energy into and make extremely happy. I agree with punchmonk, too.. I like the idea of that challenge to be devoted to each other.

Evolutionarily, we are programmed for monogamy because of females' greater parental investment. Women seek monogamy because of the physical support that they receive from their partner, like food and money. If they're not faithful then the men will leave and take their resources with them.

Wouldn't polygamy create a group fitness? If the men left or died, there'd still be many women to raise the next generation....
I guess I'm not convinced that "we are programmed for monogamy"....
Evolutionarily, women are stronger than you may think -- your assessment seems to sell them short.

Puzzled, downright BEFUDDLED by the idea of one person loving another enough not to fuck other people. Its like trying to talk to me about a two toned mobius strip where two colors never touch.

SOME KIND OF FUCKING FANTASY LAND
