have you tried a single blade safety razor? i thought it was you that made a thread about it.. maybe it was someone else.
i had similar problems and they're gone after getting DE razor a few years ago

^ yeah, but that's just dumb...my first DE razor (parker 90R) was $20 off ebay (came with 10 blades, too)...walmart sells a shaving kit that has a bowl, a boar-hair brush (not as good as badger, but i can't imagine it makes THAT much difference) and shave soap (i can't remember the brand, but i really like it...it doesn't smell girly and it doesn't dry out my skin at all, which most soaps, including shaving cream/gel, do) for $8
is it the nicest gear? no is it a helluva lot better than cartridges? yes
that's $28 for 10 weeks of shaving...how much do cartridges cost? and that's just the initial layout...past that, you can get quality blades for $0.10-$0.15/each and you replace them weekly...you're looking at a whopping $36 for a year's worth of shaving that gives you a better, closer shave and for a lot of people, something that's better for your skin (fewer cuts, razor burns, ingrown hairs, and pimples)

I got the same kit from Walscrog. My face feels so much better using the shaving soap versus any of the off-the-shelf creams/foams/gels. They just plain burn.
And shaving wet with HOT water after I get out of the shower makes a lot of difference. But I've got to get rid of the damn Fusion razor. It's stupidly expensive, and I really don't think it gets me as close or as nice as I would like.
I'm still not brave enough to use a cutthroat on myself. Well, brave enough without a doubt. But nicking one's self is just a pain in the ass. 8/25/2009 2:15:37 PM |

^ this is true...i've taken to shaving right after getting out of the shower and that makes a lot of difference
if i'm shaving and not taking a shower, i take a mug, fill it with water, and zap it in the microwave until it's boiling...i wet my face with hot water, dip the brush in the mug, and lather it up with soap...it goes on hot, but it's pleasant...i rinse the razor in water from the tap, but dip it for just a second in the almost-boiling water before actually shaving (more than just a dip and it get hot FAST...brass'll do that)

that's humorous
do you shave, Frosh? if so, with what? how often? how often do you change your blade?
assuming market price of 8 Fusion/Schick Quattro Tit blades are around $25, those razors will last about 8 weeks
the 200 blades I bought for 35 bucks will last me between 100 and 200 weeks (that's two to four years)
(8 x 25 = 200 and 25 x $25 is $625)
$625 > $35
With me so far?
The shaving creme I bought will last me about 4 months for about $15. A can of Barbasol is about $2 and will last about 2 months.
12 tubs of the good stuff = $180 for 4 years (let's call it $200) 24 cans of Barbasol = $48 for 4 years (let's call it $50)
$625 + 50 > $35 + 200
With me so far?
Your plastic disposable razor costs $10 and who knows how long it will last. My steel razor costs $50 and will last as long as I take care of it (trying searching Ebay for some vintage safety razors and see how old some of them are)
$675 + 10 > $235 + 50
With me so far?
Anyone who doesn't use an alum block or a styptic pencil is dumb, so let's call that one even.
$685 > $285
Aftershave? Yeah...pretty much same thing as the alum block.
Am I missing anything else?
So your plastic, disposable, non-biodegradable razor will cost you $171.50 a year, where as mine will cost $58.75 a year, and I'll have a much better shave than you will, every time I shave (even if I cut myself at first).
But, hey....my math could be wrong.8/25/2009 2:48:06 PM |

I use Witch Hazel instead of an alum block. It does essentially the same thing. And if you don't cut yourself you don't need a styptic pencil. But I agree, the saftey razor wet shave is the way to go. I use a Merkur HD and Col Conk. Soap. 8/25/2009 2:57:31 PM |

i agree that the "shaving like a man" bit is dumb, but it was a chit chat thread...they aren't USUALLY serious...as for "gewgaws and creams and shit", the things he listed are generally accepted as requirements for DE shaving and they're an investment that lasts a helluva a lot longer than whatever disposable crap you use
even if you're not one of the people that would benefit physically from using DE over disposable/cartridges (some of us do it because it is a LOT more comfortable), you can't possibly argue the fact that it's cheaper in the long run...while i realize you're made of money and keeping track of the money you spend is beneath you, the rest of us use a bit more common sense (not necessarily saying that using a DE razor makes more sense, but that we're at least aware of our finances) 8/25/2009 3:06:17 PM |

through the use of a usual sunday coupon, 8 cartridges should cost no more than $4, which throws off your calculations significantly
if you want to say you enjoy doing it your way, that's fine, but let's not pretend that it's any more economical or manly to do it a different way

i just use a mach 3, works well enough, cheap enough (i don't have to use it every day (yay lab environments)) and fast enough (one $30 pack of cartridges typically lasts me a year or so, i have almost never had issues with razor burn or ingrowns or cutting myself)
i'd rather not and currently do not have the time and initial cash outlay to invest into something like shaving.
so ultimately there is a possibility of a minuscule amount of less money spent in the very long term (safety razor over semi-disposable) with no perceivable direct benefit for me or my face other than i'd be "shaving like a man" if i used a safety razor or a straight blade.
to assume, as the very thread title does, that somehow to not use a straight or safety razor implies that you are 'not' "shaving like a man" is, to be blunt, ignorant, short sided, and stupidly condescending.
but hey, have fun with your hobby. 8/25/2009 10:40:47 PM |

quagmire02, I heard some really good things about those blades, and I saw the deal on ebay for them, so I picked them up...I hope they work for me!
I was looking at B&B last night and I may join up
do you have one of those brush and blade holders? 8/26/2009 1:36:24 AM |
quagmire02 All American 44225 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, best of luck with the blades...i wouldn't have thought that something like the blade would matter overmuch (i mean, they sell a one-size-fits-all mach3 blade, right?), but some work really well for people and some don't...best you can do is try out a couple of different brands and pick the one that works best for your face
i don't have a brush and blade holder myself...i picked up a stainless steel 4-brush holder for my electric toothbrush...since it's just mine and my girlfriend's in the holder, i just put the razor in the one farthest from the toothbrushes (it's not like they drip on it or anything)...and because of the way my sink is designed, the brush sits at an angle over the basin (so the bristles aren't just sitting on the counter or sink itself)
it's a cheap setup, but it works
i'll probably ask for a holder and a badger brush (maybe some old bond street, too) for my bday or christmas 8/26/2009 7:52:57 AM |

i can't scan the coupon because i used it i don't remember when it was in the paper, but i know it expired 7/31.
it was maybe 2 months ago, there was a $4 off fusion blades coupon in the paper, which i combined with some sale that was going on at target. i do the same with schick quattro blades. i don't spend a lot of time hunting for deals, if i happen to have a coupon i glance at the display in the store and do the math. usually it doesn't come out that cheap, but if it's a good deal i get however many make sense. it happens often enough that i only have to buy blades 2-3 times a year.
you could probably get them for even cheaper if you or your lady is one of those maniacal couponing stackers. i think there is a thread in cc or the lounge about it.

While I haven't gotten them for $4, with coupons and sales and online purchases I have gotten them (8) for <$10 on occasion and I've never spent more than ~$15 for 8. The Schick Quattro 8-pack is like $18 at Walgreen's not even on sale. That plus the quattro's almost always last me 2 weeks easy, usually 3 weeks (3 mornings a week of shaving), as opposed to the 1 week per blade that kdawg(c) used in his assumption. So a pack of 8 blades lasts me 5-6 months and I just glance for deals/coupons and wait until I see them at a bargain since I'm never in a hurry to restock (I have about 20 blades at home right now because I bought 2 sets of 8 last month for $11 each so I won't be needing any for awhile ). Also if you use the math and look at 200 weeks/ 3 weeks per blade, thats 8 packs of blades of 4 years at $15. Thats $120, significantly less than the $625 figure used.
Not that it matters, since it doesn't bother me much how other people shave, just adding my voice.

^ i agree, the $625 figure is a bit high...also, i realize that some people have to shave more or less often (for me, it wasn't that i had to shave so much, but they'd dull quickly and leave me with burn and bumps, so i had to replace them every other week at the latest) 8/26/2009 10:41:39 AM |
