wow, what an amazing defensive show here against a vaunted ACC offensive power. that 5-yard cushion on every play is so fucking intimidating.

Tie him up and put him on the next train out of Raleigh. (this suggestion is much better than actually legal when compared to the ones I've been screaming for the last 3 hours.).

I do not understand how this defense is supposed to ever work against a good QB. We have always had this crazy soft OCI:JKJ:LDCIOEJFOJFDFKJDSF

we shouldn't be allowing them to catch the ball in the first place. we hardly ever break up a pass, it's like we allow them to catch the ball and then try to contain them. we give up way too much space so they're more able to make a move and evade tackles. it's pretty sad to watch. this "bend but don't break" philosophy is obviously broken.

I'd be laughing quite a lot over the sheer irony of us being ranked #1 defense in the nation a few weeks ago, if it weren't for the fact that our terrible defense caused us to lose to Duke at home.

The sad overrides the funny.

Can we at least try:

1. Anything but zone coverage
2. Lining up DBs within 10 yards of LOS
3. Lining a DB up against the WR in the slot

and for god's sake

4. COVER THE DAMN RB OUT OF THE BACKFIELD

he needs to be fired now. the idea that archer is holding recruits for us is laughable.

you been the short passing game by jamming the receivers at the line of scrimmage. we never did, so they ran free through our secondary and got the ball before our pass rush even had time to get there.

you dont let them get 460 fucking yards because you are afraid to try something different. I dont give a shit if we are a zone team -- you have to have bump and run coverage in your arsenal so you can stop the short passing game.

this is basic stuff. archer is an idiot. obrien is a fool for holding on to this guy.

These guys are professionals, don't get me wrong. I for one do not think they are stupid. Continuing to play zone in the face of continued negative results can only mean that our players are physically unable to play any other style.

I will say that the offensive coaches needed to open it up to match the nature of the game and I dont feel like they did.

^^Yeah Archer doesn't even do much of the recruiting....IIRC Coach Andy McCollum takes most of the defensive recruiting responsibilities right?

^^^ obviously "beat"

^^ being a "professional" doesn't mean shit. I work with professionals everyday, and there are many dumbasses. As with any other fucking field, talent is distributed according to a bell curve. Archer is on the low end of the curve. You can tell by looking at his actual accomplishments, which are meager.

Furthermore, coaching is not as competitive as you would like. It's all about connections and being in the right place (just like every other field).

I have no doubt that archer is an idiot and a below average coordinator, as a result.

Sounds more like the definition of insanity to me. What would happen if we tried to play another style that our players were not physically capable of? Allowing 760 passing yards?

You guys realize that TOB is also stupid for:

1.) Hiring Archer
2.) Keeping Archer

Now, I'm not calling for TOB's head, yet, but Archer needs to be thrown out of here quick. Who didn't see this coming? He had the second worst defense in the nation before coming here.

GET RID OF THIS MORON.

Look what happened the 2 times we did an OLB blitz....it ended with a sack and a tackle for loss.

But did we try that again? No.....

End the 8 yard cushion on WRs and especially slot guys and ocassionally drop out of zone. You cannot play zone 100% of the time....a decent QB will eat you alive. Perfect examples: Riley Skinner and Thad Lewis.

I REALLY want to be in the first meeting between TOB and his defensive staff after this game. From looking at the amount of adjustment we saw in the game sat, we will have 0 adjustment the entire year and lose all of our games.

3-9, 4-8 maybe. This is so bad. When you know what they are going to do, and they do it and you have nothing. Its so bad.

I feel bad for Willie Young. Knowing how good our D-line is and the fact that they have 0 help behind them is infuriating.

Really, when you look at it, Lewis was far and away the best QB they'll face the rest of the year. No one remaining seems to be world beating. Taylor at VT maybe, but they run the ball most of the time. But it's crazy when you look at State's DBs compared to everyone else. They're so damned small...hard to be physical at the LOS.

USC- we have a damn good defense. offense needs a ton of work or that was a hell of a defense.
Murray State- we have a damn good defense. offense looked a lot better
Gardner Webb- we have a damn good defense. offense still looks a lot better
Pitt- We have a damn good D-line with some fixable issues in the secondary. offense looks pretty good.
Wake- We have a damn good D-line. Any good quarterback is going to have a field day with our secondary. We need to fix something. offense still looks pretty good.
Duke- KILL THE SECONDARY WITH FIRE! FIRE MIKE ARCHER! WHY ARE THEY SO SMALL!! WHY CANT THEY TACKLE! WHAT THE HELL DID WE JUST SEE? it doesnt matter how good our offense is

this is going to be long and painful. I am not angry anymore. Entering this game I had an unanswered question, "Are good and do we have a shot at the ACC?" Resounding no to both.

It might've already been mentioned, but everyone needs to watch http://www.wralsportsfan.com/duke/video/6179007/ and realize how bad Mike Archer is. Thad Lewis basically said we did exactly what they saw on tape, they knew every coverage and knew where every blitz was coming from. Pathetic.

"The game felt good," Lewis said. "Coming into this game, they showed us exactly what we saw on film. ... It was just go out there and play because I knew the plays we had called were fixed to beat the coverage that they were playing out there tonight."

Does anybody have the stats of how many balls were actually thrown more than 10 yards past the line of scrimmage? I'm sure that would be interesting. I knew we had questions about our secondary going into the season, but wow, are these guys really scholarship players? If so, it would be better to forfeit their scholarship money and give it to the Herzlich foundation, at least its going for a good cause then.

“The game felt good. I felt confident coming into this game with the game plan our coach gave us and coming into this game they showed us exactly what we saw on film. So I knew they weren’t doing anything differently, so I felt confident in what we had planned, just to go out there and play because I knew the plays were the right call.

“They did exactly what we anticipated what they were going to do. Rush four and drop seven back in the zone, play a little two-man from time to time. They did the exact blitzes, when they blitz we knew the blitzes were coming on the play so we attacked that.”

^^it was very frustrating, but i can't really fault byers for that first one, he was doing exactly what he was supposed to be doing by running upfield and away from where the ball was going, but it ended up taking a very odd bounce. chalk that up to some nc state shit.

Yes, because that really should have been in that position in the first place against a team that lost to Richmond.
