I thought the beginning sequence with the railroad track and spaceship were awesome.

I'd say the only thing that I wasn't crazy about was the dinosaur. He is usually my favorite character but didn't seem quite as funny this go round.

I am not really sure what you are implying there. I thought the movie was awesome, and the majority of it I was laughing, as was everyone else in the theater. And if you think this movie was designed solely for children you're really far off base. All I was saying was I didn't think the dinosaur's lines were as funny as they were in previous movies.

I just saw it and loved it. There was a large amount of dust in the air at the ending so I assume that is why I was tearin up. I paid the extra what ever to see it in 3d and was unimpressed. Anyone else with me, or did the 3d effects bring the movie experience closer to home?

Saw it this afternoon with the wife and kid. I absolutely loved it. I think I was more excited than most of the kids present during the opening sequence.

maybe in the past, but this is just completely wrong after How To Train Your Dragon, and to a lesser extent (imo) Kung Fu Panda.

I haven't seen how to train your dragon, but most of the dreamworks films i've seen rely way too much on topical humor and references that become outdated quickly. That's probably their biggest factor in the gap between dreamworks and pixar. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a lot of them the first time I see them, but rarely have any desire for repeat viewing (Shrek and kung fu panda being the exceptions)

Kung Fu panda was definitely better than most of the other dreamworks films, and if they keep putting out films like that, they'll match up better with Pixar in terms of quality, but they historically have been more about quantity than quality, and from a business standpoint, that strategy has lent itself to generating tons of revenues, but some of those movies have just been terrible (Bee Movie and Shark Tale).

^^ Yeah I agree in general. And at this point Pixar's body of work is still far superior to Dreamworks.

How to Train your Dragon, in my mind, brought Dreamworks ability right up to par with Pixar.

So so good.

I'm glad there were five minutes of silliness after the Andy->Bonnie transfer.

Or I would've left the theater teary-eyed as hell.

Are we still having this dreamworks discussion?

"You're my bitch, dreamworks": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GroDErHIM_0

We aren't talking about filmmaking skills that are even in the same ballpark.

^There was nothing to talk about until Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and How To Train Your Dragon.

We'll see if Dreamworks can keep it up.

But I'm going to stop talking about Dreamworks.

This thread is about the best film of the year so far.

Took my mom today to see it today. Went in not expecting much, but I ended up loving nearly every second of this movie. It's hilarious, ingenious at moments, and incredibly sincere. The last scene ranks up there with the most bittersweet moments I've ever seen in film, no joke.

Really, it's a movie that seems nearly impossible not to like.

I saw the first one 15 years ago, never saw the second one. Doesn't matter though. You'll like Toy Story 3 regardless.

great movie and the depth perception in 3D was pretty good, though I wish there was more 'in your face/pop out at cha' stuff for a $27 pair of tix

Really good movie!

I saw it at the IMAX and wasn't impressed with the 3-D honestly. It might have been because I had to sit pretty low. I think you could watch the 2-D at a normal theater and have just as good an experience.

The 3D on Day and Night was great.

I would rather watch Toy Story 3 in 2D honestly.

Fantastic film.

Saw it in 2D, and was a little disappointed when it became obvious almost immediately that "Day & Night" is a 3D showcase, but whatever.

saw it this weekend finally in 3D - could have gone without the 3D as I was unimpressed, but the beginning short skit "Day & Night" was pretty cool in 3-D.

Anyway - awesome movie! Loved every minute of it, lot better than toy story 2 i think. When Buzz hits the Spanish mode, that shit was funny as hell...i'm just sayin'.

ShinAntonio, the Totoro was visible in Bonnie's room, looking upon Woody and Trixie at the iMac

[Edited on July 10, 2010 at 2:05 AM. Reason : also I liked the scene where the toys almost entered the fires of Hell incinerator

Saw it yesterday in 3D. Good film, seemed a little dark for a kid's movie at times though. I know my 4 year old would be totally freaked out by it. Either way, great film from start to finish, well written and very funny.

I thought it was pretty serious to pit the characters at a very likely, possible situation in which they'd die. I mean, they were perfectly helpless. The aliens rescuing them was such a Deus ex machina device. I'm amazed that your kid wasn't terrified, or at least a little bit scared... maybe he just wasn't comprehending what was going on and/or maybe kids at that age just don't really get the concept of death.

I would almost go as far to say that this movie was more for adults than it was for kids, since it had such a serious possibility as death and such a sweet nod to youth nostalgia that most kids probably don't register either of those feelings.

There were a couple scenes that were pretty intense, like the aforementioned "we are surely going to die in this huge pit of fire" scene. Plus I don't want my kid running around calling people "idiot" or "stupid" which was done more than once in the movie.

I could show my 1 year old this movie or even my older daughter when she was under 3 and neither of them would probably get much of what was going on, but for a kid that is over 4 and picks up on everything going on and that is said around her, no way I'd let her see this.

Not detracting from the quality of the movie, it was very well done, but I'd also venture to say it was more of a fun adult movie than a kid's movie.

- Bambi's mom gets shot dead.
- Bambi kills Ronno.
- Copper lets Tod go, which results in Chief getting hit by a train. (And the film is much more family-friendly than the book.)
- Marlin's wife and entire family sans one egg get killed by a barracuda.

Et cetera.

Bad things happen. Life is full of drama. The emotional realism in Pixar films is something that doesn't exist in enough children's entertainment these days. Perhaps if they had been making feature films for the past thirty years, the world would not have so many hypersensitive assholes in it.
