So for those who have watched both, is Firefly anything like Cowboy Bebop?

That's the only "space western" I can think of.

best quality from that list

babylon 5 if you want more opera-ish aspects that's also long but definitely a solid step down from the top 3.

farscape is ok but weird, in more of a wtf is going on and why aren't there more boobs?

Stargate is iffy, it's ok sometimes, it's pretty stupid other times (formulaic)

andromeda sucks, kevin sorbo, that should tell you all you need to know to stay well away....
(the only thing that made Hercules and xena watchable were tits anyway)

fringe is ok, but not space opera

the dune miniseries is probably ok as well, didn't watch most of it but overall reception was pretty good...

not really like cowboy bebop as the whole aspect is different, it's more of a backwater worlds with civilization just barely holding on to the outskirts of a 100+ system area of space and the remnants of a relatively recent rebellion against the major central authority had occurred compared with mostly high tech worlds in a single solar system with several non-warring major governments.

i have to say, this is the most underrated star trek ever...i rarely watched it when it was on television, but on a whim downloaded the whole series and started watching it...it's extremely good and ties with TNG as my favorite (though they're different enough that it's hard to compare them)

i've never seen cowboy bebop, so i realize you're not talking to me in particular, but...isn't that anime? firefly is kind of a robin hood/western/star trek mashup

also, it has morena baccarin in it (she plays a high-end hooker of sorts)...you should watch it for her if for no other reason

jewel staite is cute, too

firefly didn't end on a massive cliffhanger, like some shows. so you won't finish the series and be like "if they had only filmed 3 more episodes, it would ALL make sense!!"

it's more of a "damn it! this show was awesome...i wish there were more episodes"

^oh, i agree...had it kept going, i'm sure it would've had some cool multi-episodic story arcs. i'm just saying that firefly wasn't axed in the middle of such a story arc.

also, i agree with you about watching firefly for morena baccarin (if nothing else)

So i finally finished the series and am completely satisfied and completely unsatisfied all at the same time. There are so many ifs ands and buts and questions that i want answers to and character interactions that i still want to see. Definitely a great show that was cancelled before it's prime. I wish there was something that could be done, but from all i've read Firefly is done...forever.

Battlestar Galactica would have been the best television series of all time if the finale was even sub-par. But it was HOLY-SHIT-WHAT-SHOW-AM-I-EVEN-WATCHING bad.

Short, sweet, nerdy, and of the so-absurd-its-actually-funny genre:

Special Unit 2

Edit: though perhaps not really sci-fi. So ... try UFO http://ufoseries.com/

Just finished Season 1 of Battlestar Gallactica. I have enjoyed it, though am a little confused about a few plot points and have a few gripes as well...but i think that goes with any sci fi series (less firefly which is perfect )

I plan on getting season 2.0 soon to keep going. I really dislike Baltar...i know i'm supposed to but, man, for the guy to be so smart is nothing but a puppet.

In this order.

Battlestar Galactica/Firefly/Farscape
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Stargate SG1/Atlantis
Andromeda

I couldnt pick between Farscape, Firefly, and BSG they are all good for so many different reasons.

BSG and Farscape are about the same in length and both high quality. Farscape is the NERDIEST by FAR.

Firefly is so sweet because it is so short. Leaves you begging for more.

BTW you must watch the Farscape mini series that concludes all the story arcs. Must watch TV.

Sliders ftw first 2 seasons
Heros season 1 and 3
Honestly I dont know how well Babylon 5 would float with todays CG. But it was good none the less. It actually gets more epic then any of the other shows mentioned. Especially in the last 2 seasons.

spoilers..

................i mean they show the evolution of the human race and the destruction of our solar system at the end......lordy

What kind of fail suggestions are these? Look, if you're watching one series out of that list, it has to be Battlestar Galactica. None of the other shows match the intensity or quality by any margin. Plus Tricia Helfer and Grace Park.

Just do the entire canonical history of Star Trek.

Star Trek: The Original Series
Star Trek: Next Generation
Star Trek: Deep Space 9
Star Trek: Voyager
Star Trek: Enterprise

And no, I wouldn't put Enterprise between TOS and TNG since it fucking breaks the golden rule.
