Looks like there may be a challenger in the works after all:
Draft Billy Kennedy for U.S. House (NC-5) http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=220020735279

Quote : | "Group hopes to inspire candidate
By: Scott Nicholson Old-school politics usually involved lots of backroom maneuvering of candidates, with a small party core deciding which candidates to put forth in coming elections. That grooming process has been tossed out like punch-card ballots and train-whistle stops by Democrats who are lining up behind their favored candidate to take on incumbent Republican Virginia Foxx for the Fifth District U.S. Congressional seat next year. A public campaign is underway called "Draft Billy Kennedy," with party faithful hoping to gently pressure Kennedy into entering the race. What makes the draft attempt different is that the momentum is gathering in the virtual world, driven by a younger pool of voters. Jesse Presnell, vice chairman of the Watauga County Young Democrats who administers the Facebook social networking page, said a few people had heard Kennedy was thinking about running, and he started the Facebook group "Draft Billy Kennedy" to garner support. "It wasn't just creating the page, it was how many people instantly got behind it that was exciting," Presnell said. During the first week of launch, the group was getting about 60 new members a day, and he said Google searches on the Internet had shown 300,000 people in a six-day period had searched for the names "Kennedy" and "Foxx" together. "A lot of the hits were from Washington, D.C.," Presnell said. "People are really interested in this race. I've been wanting to draft him for a long time, and a lot of other people have wanted to create the groundswell support to get him to run." Kennedy said he was grateful for the attention and support and is seriously considering running. He said he would make a decision after the holidays. Kennedy is a carpenter and farmer in Bethel, having lived in the county for 30 years. He's served as a party precinct chair and with the party's state executive committee, though he's never run for public office. He is also host of the "Watauga Talks" radio show that airs Friday mornings on 1450 AM WATA. Kennedy sent Presnell a letter to post on the blog as he makes up his mind: "I've been overwhelmed and honored by so many people asking me to run for the 5th district Congressional seat. Our district needs representation in Washington that is serious about the needs of people in our area, most especially jobs and future opportunities for ourselves and our children. In light of these hard times, it is not acceptable that our current legislator, Virginia Foxx, says 'no' to every proposed solution while at the same time taking advantage of limited taxpayer dollars for her own needs. "As for now, I am seriously considering my options. This is not something I can suddenly rush into without a lot of homework and planning, not to mention the support of my family and closest friends. I hope to have a concrete decision in the coming weeks and will certainly let all you good people know as soon as possible what my plans are. In the meantime, keep the faith that positive change can indeed come to our district." Presnell noted that the draft campaign was picked up by Beltway Blitz, Blue NC, Swing State Project and other prominent political blogs. "He definitely got a ton of attention really quickly," Presnell said. "Most people know he's the radio host from Boone." As of Wednesday, Kennedy had 438 members of the "Draft Billy Kennedy" Facebook group. Bradley Smith, a general contractor in Wilkes County, has announced he will run in the race as an independent. Because of campaign requirements for third parties, he will need to collect a petition of 17,000 signatures in order to get on the ballot. His Web site is http://www.mrsmithgoestowashington.info. Foxx has not yet formally announced a run for a fourth term, but her Web site Virginia Foxx for Congress is still active and accepting contributions. She has a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/virginia.foxx1 with 3,875 friends." |
The article is mostly about the draft Kennedy facebook group & giving a little more background on Kennedy, but the reason I found it interesting is the part that I bolded, with an independent running in the race too. From looking at his website http://www.mrsmithgoestowashington.info which at first I read as Mrs Mith goes to Washington, his stance on the issues or "political beliefs" seem more right leaning and aren't very fleshed out. I wonder how a third candidate will play in this election. Will it siphon off right wing votes from Foxx or independent votes from Kennedy?12/16/2009 7:01:03 PM |

Nothing rankles Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) more than talking when it’s frowned upon.
Take, for example, Tuesday morning’s Republican Conference meeting with members and staff.
It appears Rep. David Dreier of California dared to whisper something to Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas. That garnered a strong “shh” from Foxx, complete with a pointed finger admonishing her two colleagues. She then took to the mic and told the crowd it was rude for members and staff to talk.
“Think back to your school days,” Foxx spokesman Aaron Groen offered. “She’s a teacher at heart. After all her years in education, she can’t resist trying to quiet the classroom down.” " |

Quote : | "36. Virginia Foxx
Charges: There are plenty of terrible people in congress, but none are as shithouse dumb as this repugnant, purblind vulture. Aggressively gullible in the way that only those lost to the crude comforts of pure dogma can be, Foxx is similar to her peculiar fans, who call themselves patriots while openly despising 80% of their country’s population, in that she’s able to swallow whole and regurgitate absurd, ahistorical fictions, and go right on believing them in the face of absolute proof of their falsehood. Racially clueless, Foxx thought it relevant to mention that an economist who disagreed with Obama was black. You know, he’s black, and even HE disagrees with Obama. Who is also black. That’s relevant. Exhibit A: “[Republicans] were the people who passed the civil rights bills back in the ’60s without very much help from our colleagues across the aisle. They love to engage in revisionist history.” Sentence: To become part of a “hoax,” similar to the Matthew Shepard murder." |

The President isn't a socialist, he's out there traveling today espousing the view that businesses are good, and that small businesses need more tax credits & access to more loans.
Your arguments fail when they have "President Obama is a socialist" as a key component to making any case your trying to make.

^ You seem to be attributing different meanings to my posts, Supp.
1) Obama is a socialist My original statement is that we don't need this guy elected so that Obama has one more vote to advance his socialist policies.
2) Where is the birth certificate? Your counter to me is that Obama isn't a socialist. My response if that many of his actions and policies are socialist. (Bank take-overs, car company take-overs etc.). I further went on to say that we might know more about Obama's political philosophy if he would stop refusing to release some of his earlier political writings.
Obama won’t release any records and that include his college records from Occidental College, Columbia, and Harvard. he also won't release any medical records. 3) one of the photos is fuzzy Sorry I wasn't more clear. I said the photo was fuzzy just like his liberal politics

To make it clear, I think the idea that the President is a socialist is absurd. So no, I don't think he is. Market failures require government action, and we had one hell of a market failure. The circumstance required gov action so we are seeing more regulatory actions than we would have otherwise. I think by the end of he's second term you'll be singing a different tune as to whether you think he's too socialist or not.
"If you don't think Obama is a bad president, then I don't know how any democrat could disappoint you."
President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, he signed a bill to expand veteran benefits, he signed kids tobacco legislation, he signed a major land protection act, & SCHIP, gave the Cairo speech to the Muslim world & has represented our country abroad (Europe seems to be pretty fond of him for the most part), he oversees an EPA that has shown it is willing to get tough on environmental issues via regulation if the congress wont via legislation, he gave a widely watched education speech, he's advocated for science in our schools, & is for stem cell research, he's appointed a supreme court justice, he's ended torture, respects the Geneva Convention, and has plans to close Gitmo (albeit behind schedule after responding to facts on the ground), he's going to have us out or Iraq next year and starting to pulling out of Afghanistan (the one that actually attacked us) at the same time.
And this year he has been off to a much stronger start. If you wanted an example of a bad or crazy democrat I don't know how you went to President Obama before Pelosi or Kucinich.

I agree with you here..but it's the actual gov't actions where we would probably disagree. Obama thinks the problem is solved by more gov't. More gov't regulation, more gov't ownership, more money poured into other gov't pockets.
I'd rather see the gov't get out of the way (Freddie, Frannie, Barney, Nancy, Harry etc). Let bad companies fail, stop trying to mitigate the bad effects of our bad decisions. Let the market right itself.
John Stossel:
Quote : | "Government is taking us a long way down the Road to Serfdom. That doesn't just mean that more of us must work for the government. It means that we are changing from independent, self-responsible people into a submissive flock. The welfare state kills the creative spirit.
This shouldn't be controversial. If government relieves us of the responsibility of living by bailing us out, character will atrophy. The welfare state, however good its intentions of creating material equality, can't help but make us dependent. That changes the psychology of society." |

The point of welfare is not to create “material equality” and it is not designed that way anyway. Stossel is wrong about that.
And historically, secure social systems have caused creativity to thrive. Most if not all of the great thinkers that we know of from history came the most comfortable, organized societies that happened to have strong centralized governments. 2/19/2010 1:35:13 AM |

Quote : | " BETHEL, NC - Newcomer Congressional candidate Billy Kennedy surprised political pundits on Tuesday by matching incumbent Representative Virginia Foxx (NC-5) in first quarter 2010 financial contributions and widely exceeded Foxx in the number of individual donors, according to official filings with the Federal Elections Commission by both candidates for the quarter covering January 1 - March 31.
Kennedy took in over $91,109 in contributions from individuals, compared to Foxx's $69,097. A full third of Foxx's total contributions came from political action committees (PACs), including the American Bankers' Association, the National Association of Health Underwriters, and the National Association of Realtors PAC.
Less than one percent of Kennedy's contributions came from PACs. Instead, Kennedy amassed his impressive numbers from over 900 individual donors who gave small sums.
"We set a financial goal for the first quarter and exceeded it. I am overwhelmed at the generosity of regular working people who gave $10 or $20 because that's what they could afford and because they want new representation in Washington," said Kennedy.
"People are sending a message to my opponent loud and clear: you've been in Washington too long, and we've got nothing but hard times to show for it."
Kennedy is running on a populist platform that promises to "send a working man to clean up the House." He says the people of North Carolina's 5th District know they are poorly represented by incumbent Virginia Foxx and are ready for someone who will vote in their interest rather than the interests of PACs, big banks, and corporate CEOs." |

Quote : | "According to the website http://www.opensecrets.org, Foxx had $1.27 million in cash on hand at the end of June, and Kennedy had a little over $70,000.
Any Democrat who wants to make headway is going to have to win big in populous Forsyth and Watauga counties at either end of the district and siphon off enough votes from dissatisfied voters in the middle.
Ask him about those disadvantages, though, and Kennedy has answers. Shoe leather, phone calls and a backside toughened by countless trips up and down U.S. 421 to pump up his name recognition -- bolstered by a small but committed core of Internet-savvy volunteers -- should help him gain ground." |

Billy Kennedy is like a breath of fresh air! From his upbringing, he knows what it's like for the middle class who are struggling in today's economy. He would be a much better representative for NC that what we have now. I agree that there is enough frustration in our district that he could upset Virginia Foxx in November's election. " |

I've known Billy Kennedy for many years, and he's truly one of the best human beings I've ever had the privilege of knowing. He's a true "community man." He has pitched in and used his skills as a carpenter to help build our community shelter and picnic area in the Beaver Dam community. Among many other good deeds. One thing Sexton didn't mention that speaks volumes: Billy Kennedy is the son of a renown Presbyterian minister, and he learned great lessons in helping people from his dad. It will be a hopeful thing to vote for him in Nov. Our current Rep. in Washington has shown precious little signs of humanity ... only a hard-hearted partisanship that can't even bring itself to vote for school lunches. " |
The article also points out that she isn't as popular among voters there as Burr was when he was a congressman from that district, and that Kennedy has a little bit of the whole understanding the working man/anti-incumbency thing going for him. Still, its a long shot against the war-chest she built up as an incumbent, but as good of a shot as the 5th is ever going to have with it being something of an anti-incumbent year.8/19/2010 11:30:27 PM |

The democrats have had their chance to restart the economy..and instead wasted their time on Obamacare, Cap n tax and gov't pork disguised as stimulus.
The repubs better get the message and get some Free Market Capitalism going, or we're gonna kick their butts out too. 9/14/2010 9:46:32 PM |

A deather paneler, compares opposition political position to terrorism, calls a son’s murder a hoax in front of his mom for political points, voted against relief for victims of Katrina, she took credit for civil rights legislation, she spends time doing stuff like cosponsoring a resolution stating religion is necessary for freedom, she was in on the attempted constitutional amendment to ban flag burning, she voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, she voted against kids health insurance, she cosponsored a bill to repeal DC’s marriage equality & tried a US constitutional amendment to ban it, she has horrible environmental rankings, she’s anti-choice, she’s voted against stem cell research, she voted against repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and has stated that “I'm misunderstood in the same way Jesse Helms was.”
Okay, I took out the ones you said were unimportant, I still don't see Foxx as very defensible. 9/14/2010 10:38:41 PM |

Latest msg from the Kennedy campaign:
"End of Quarter Deadline Tonight at Midnight-Help us put our ads on the air early!" http://www.billykennedyforcongress.com/pages/contribute.htm
Quote : | "Dear Friends,
With just 33 days left until the election, now is the time to make your voice heard.
Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, our campaign has shown significant momentum in the past few weeks. We have shattered our voter registration goals. We have led the nation in voter contact by reaching out to literally thousands of voters from Winston-Salem to Watauga County.
With just over a month left, won't you help push us over the finish line? We have great ads in the hopper, we just need the funds to pay for the spots.
Can you chip in and help us raise $5,000 by the end of the day? If we can reach this goal, we will be able to air the ads a week earlier.
Just this week, Billy had one of his best online fundraising days of the entire election cycle.
Please help him continue this momentum by contributing $5, $10, $15 or $25 now to send a working man to clean up Washington.
You can also mail a check made out to:
Billy Kennedy for Congress PO Box 112 DTS Boone, NC 28607.
Join thousands of other donors and help us spread Billy's message with a contribution of $5, $10, $25 today.
Thanks for helping us put our message on the air. When we are in this together, we will succeed.
All best,
Jaret Glazer Billy Kennedy for Congress Finance Director" |

He picked up their endorsement today (I believe Winston is the largest population center in the 5th so this should help some):

Quote : | "U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, a Republican from Watauga County, has not achieved any great accomplishments for the residents of the 5th Congressional District, and has angered and embarrassed many with her sometimes wild statements that seem designed to provoke. It’s time for a fresh, progressive voice in the 5th District. We believe that Democrat Billy Kennedy, a Watauga farmer and carpenter who says he’ll work to reverse the high rate of unemployment in the district, is that voice. He’s the best candidate in the Nov. 2 election for the 5th District.
...
Then there are Foxx’ statements, which reflect a viewpoint far to the right of many of her constituents. Foxx, a former college educator and graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Greensboro, said on the House floor in January that the federal government “should not be funding education.”
...
The Journal endorses Billy Kennedy for the 5th District congressional seat." |

Its debate season:
http://www.jeffersonpost.com/view/full_story/9869600/article-Foxx--Kennedy-to-square-off-in-forum?instance=home_news_lead
Quote : | "Foxx, Kennedy to square off in forum
Turnout is expected to be heavy for tonight’s forum with U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) and her Democratic challenger Billy Kennedy, both from Watauga County. The forum takes place at Ashe Civic Center in West Jefferson beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Sponsored by the New River Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), the 90-minute forum is open to the public and will be moderated by three panelists: Lonnie Adamson, editor and general manager of the Jefferson Post, Ron Fitzwater, editor of the Ashe Mountain Times, and Scott Nicholson, senior political writer for the Watauga Democrat. Questions were invited to be sent in by the public.
The forum is expected to be broadcast live on radio station WMMY ‘My Country’ ‘Highway’ 106.1 FM broadcasting from Boone and serving the counties of Watauga, Ashe, Avery, Alleghany, Wilkes, Catawba and Caldwell.
Foxx was reelected to her third term to represent North Carolina’s Fifth District in the United States House of Representatives in November 2008. Prior to serving in Congress, Foxx spent 10 years in the North Carolina Senate. Virginia is married to Tom Foxx. Prior to her entering Congress, the couple owned a nursery business in Watauga County.
Kennedy is the host of WATA-AM’s call-in show, “Watauga Talks.” He’s also the son of a minister, and later mayor of Black Mountain, NC; a farmer; a father; a carpenter; and is active in community service. Billy is married to Becka Saunders. They have three children and one son-in-law." |
I wonder if his radio experience will give him an edge in this arena?10/11/2010 9:41:23 PM |
