Thats what I'm thinking...just like their multitouch touchpad had limited capabilities in its first iteration...this does as well. One thing I like about apple that can't be said for very many other companies is that they'll release things in small doses vs. releasing some new product that does it all from day one and is over whelming and flawed.
Quote : | "Apple makes the arrogant assumption of thinking that it knows what you want and need." |
Well if we waited for users to tell us what they want and need nothing will ever change. Just like UI/UX if you don't present the user with new and improved ways of doing things they'll just stick to what they know. And I'm sure just like most businesses they don't just take a leap of faith without doing their research. I don't really know why everyone has a stick up their ass when it comes to Apple products. They're the 'little guy' and no ones forced to use any Apple product.

Is there a learning curve for the mouse's durability? because I'm 95% sure that if I didn't figure it out quickly (which could happen since as a 16 year windows user I like my 2+ button mice) I'd throw that thing.
a mouse that I'm 100% sure would get the job done for me 100% better:
I've had it for like a year and half now and its worked almost flawlessly. Every now and then after a reboot my computer will forget the drivers for it are installed, but otherwise it's perfect. Mice without right buttons = inferior.11/1/2009 2:22:20 AM |

^^ and ^^^ are we talking about the same mouse? Apple's mice have had right clicks for years now. I guess they're just too complicated for some people to use since you can't see a physical outline around a right click button and a left click button so you don't get the two confused. Sounds like a personal problem to me. 11/1/2009 2:30:45 PM |

^^^^ thats the exact mouse i got for my new iMac
right click is fucking horrible on mac mice. you have to click in the FAR top right corner of the mouse to get it to work; not just on the right side of the mouse where a button would be.
Its a joke

they dont have 2 mouse buttons. They have one button that works differently based on how many fingers you have on the mouse. If you want to right click you have to lift up your index finger to click. Not only is this unnatural, but it means you cant ever click both buttons at once. 11/1/2009 2:48:37 PM |

ok i used to hate macs but then i started getting pissy with windows because well.... it didn't work well i kept having little errors that i had to get over and live with. So i switched to linux for a while then my pc died. I've been tossing around the idea of developing iphone aps so i reluctantly got a mac. in the 48 hours i've had this thing i like it better than any pc i've ever owned.
i was going cheap so i got a 13.3" macbook pro for cheap cause i got it from a campus store here at unc charlotte ( cheaper than i could get the new macbook anywhere else ) i love this thing...
the only think i miss from a regular pc based laptop is the "value" for the same price i could have got a quad core hp with a bitchen graphics card. But i have no doubt that other than raw processor intensive stuff this thing boots faster comes out of sleep mode instantly.
I just wish it had an hdmi port which i know i can get an adapter from monoprice. And i can't find a way to rig up my old hd dvd player to it and to the tv since my xbox died.
the multitouch touchpad rocks too.

^ yeah, the most important thing to remember for new Mac users is that lots of things are "different", but that doesn't mean they're necessarily better or worse..... just different. You'll probably start running into certain tasks that were easy for you to do on the PC because you are so used to them, and you may get frustrated on the Mac because you can't figure it out. More often than not, though, when you do figure it out you'll say "oh wow, that was easy", and realize that the way you did it on the PC was actually more complicated 11/1/2009 3:22:02 PM |

btw, for uninstall, use AppCleaner - http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/ It will search your HDD and delete preferences and Library files and any other junk when you delete an app. You can use AppCleaner to delete the app, or it can run as a service so when you just trash an app normally, AppCleaner will pop up with all the other stuff to delete.
And yes, the instant-on waking is awesome. I'm still surprised when I use a PC and open the lid and have to wait 5-10 seconds before I can use the screen, then another 10-15 seconds to reconnect to wireless. I've had several PC-user friends watch me open up my MBP and the screen is on by the time the lid is open, and the wireless is connected in about 3 seconds, and they always ask about it. 11/1/2009 9:26:03 PM |

There's a big difference between research projects and commercial products. There's also a mountain of difference between those prototypes and the magic mouse. Those prototypes enable you to do things NEVER BEFORE POSSIBLE with a poitning device. The magic mouse has no new functionality, and makes existing expected functionality even more difficult to do.
When has Apple ever "unlocked new features" with software? Their entire revenue model is based on planned obsolescence. And given the form factor of the mouse, what can they unlock? It's not comfortable to perform any multi-touch gesturing on.
For the same price you can get a Wacom Bamboo, that you can actually use for multi-touch, for drawing, and as a trackpad.11/2/2009 4:24:24 PM |

^^You can get a PC for free.
^service packs != unlocking functionality. And adding functionality to an OS is different from adding functionality to a hardware device.
The iPod/iPhone have always put new functionality on the next hardware generation when things could have easily been added to the existing platform with software updates. The iPhone is the first to start adding real functionality with updates, but it's also a subsidized, subscription based revenue model.
The Magic Mouse isn't. 11/2/2009 9:42:28 PM |

^^ The distinction between software functionality and hardware functionality is much more blurred than it used to be. Or if a new driver for the magic mouse (which BTW is such a shitty name) added new gestures would you say that doesn't count? Realistically, the only way to unlock new functionality in old hardware is to change the software that runs the hardware. But you also missed 3 points of new hardware functionality given to non subscription revenue items. The 802.11n enabler turned on hardware capabilities in devices that were not advertised or sold as having said capabilities. The software updates for the iPhone have also applied to the iPod touch which is not accounted for in a subscription model. And the new OS (and I could swear a firmware update for the old OS, but can not find a link) added newer gestures from newer hardware to older hardware.
Your contention was Apple doesn't provide new features to old hardware via software updates. Your contention was disproved. 11/2/2009 11:04:59 PM |

Golovko All American 27023 Posts user info edit post |
^well I guess thats your fault? My laptops got 300gb and that isn't shit either for hd content, this is why I have a external drive with all my HD content.
and before you try and say this is an apple vs. microsoft thing...its not. Doesn't matter what laptop you buy or from who...its your job to configure it with a big enough hard drive for your needs.
And I would hope that apple wouldn't waste time on HD-DVD support...and as for blu-ray..get me a Mac that ships with blu-ray and i'm sure they'll add playback support.
