well the big selling point is the blu-ray drive

you can't ask for much more specifications wise for $500.

brand new Intel i5 processor
blu-ray drive
4GB of DDR3
HDMI
Vista 7 Premium
802.11n

you can't expect something to have all that, and kickass graphics, for $500.

Quote :
"The Intel Core i5-430M is a fast middle class dual core CPU for laptops and clocks (due to the Turbo Mode) from 2.26 to 2.53 GHz. Each core is based on the Nehalem (Westemere) micro-architecture. Hyperthreading enables the Dual Core CPU to handle 4 threads at once (for a better usage of the pipeline). Compared to the faster Core i7-620M, the 430M only has 3 MB Level 3 Cache, missing VT-d, Trusted Execution, and AES features and a lower clock speed.

A feature of the new Core i5-430M is the integrated graphics card (called Intel HD Graphics) and memory controller. Both are on a separate die that is still manufactured in 45nm whereas the CPU die is already manufactured in the new 32nm process.

Due to the integrated memory controller, the HyperThreading and Turbo Boost, the Core i5-430M is faster than a similar clocked Core 2 Duo in all (us known) applications and benchmarks. In fact, the 430M even came close to a fast Core 2 Duo T9800 (2.8 GHz) in some benchmarks (e.g. Cinebench 10 Multi Threaded). This means the 430M is a fast middle class - performance CPU and much faster than the top AMD model, the Turion II Ultra M660 (at the time of announcement)."

Quote :
"The integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card is between 500-766 MHz (Turbo Boost) and is clearly faster than the old GMA 4500MHD. A GeForce 9400M (ION) should still be a faster (especially as Nvidia and ATI cards have a better driver support than Intel up to now). The Turbo Boost can overclock the Intel HD Graphics up to 733 MHz when the cores are not fully used.

The power consumption of 35 Watt TDP (max.) counts for the whole package and therefore it is clearly better than the 35 Watt TDP of the Core 2 Duo T-series (CPU alone)."

I picked this up today. It's gonna be $507 out the door with a BB credit I had and 1% cashback from paypal debit card. After buying my own netbook last year, accidently smashing the screen, replacing it and giving it to my brother for christmas, my boss is footing the bill on this one. Or at least half, we haven't decided yet.

It's definitely no frills. I opened the box and it was PSU, quickstart, battery, laptop, and manual. Haven't had a chance to mess with it at all yet though. Labels all say i3, but device manager says i5.

my complaints so far:
resolution leaves much to be desired (but i knew that going in)
dont like the keyboard...keys wiggle around too much, feels a little cheap
i HATE the trackpad button. flippin pointless to have a single button, where 1/3 of it is unusable.

all that being said though, blu-rays look good. audio is good. runs pretty fast, not very hot. design is pretty decent. build quality is good for a $500 laptop/

^lol I just read that post on slickdeals. I cannot stand the trackpad, but hopefully I'll get used to it. It's not so much the bar (I had that on my NC10) but I find myself clicking 80% of the time on that recessed area below the bar.

looking for a laptop for around $300.. 12" or larger screen and not a celeron processor. basically i'm tired of carrying my work laptop home every night so i want something that i can just leave at home. something with a decent screen would be great as the one on my x61t sucks balls and looks like something from 1982 brightness wise.

any good deals going on?

http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/31144/Free-Download-of-OO-Defrag-Professional-11--Unerase-2--CleverCache-6-Pro--Safe-Erase-2--DriveLED

A bunch of really handy free software. No idea of the quality, but for free it can't be too bad. Worth it for me just for the Unerase, Defrag and Safe Erase apps. My parents seem to need an unerase app every year or so and I always seem to scrounge for DoD level disk wiper everytime I upgrade hard drives.

Martin Logan Motion 12 series speakers on sale for $599 for the pair. These are at best buy for $600 each right now (and on display at the Crabtree location). These are excellent speakers for the price. The deal ends on the 14th.

Is their a speaker or home stereo thread?
