"The Tennessee men's basketball 2010 signing class remains a work in progress, with the first signed letter of intent expected Thursday.

Jordan McRae, a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Liberty County High School in Midway, Ga., said he'll sign his papers at a ceremony and send them in from his school's office.

Trae Golden, a 6-1 point guard from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga., said his signing with the Vols will be Monday or Tuesday.

"I've always known I wanted to come play for Tennessee, since the first time I went up there,'' said McRae, who committed to the Vols more than a year ago after attending a UT home football game against Florida.

McRae is rated the No. 6 shooting guard in the nation by Scout.com, and Rivals.com has him ranked as the No. 42 player in the nation on their Rivals 150 list.

Golden, who committed Sept. 17, plays AAU basketball with McRae on the Atlanta Celtics and is just as eager as McRae to wear orange.

"I'm going to sign Monday or Tuesday,'' Golden said. "My sister is currently in Australia, and I want her to be there. She works for Lockheed Martin, so she's over there for work.''

Golden is rated the No. 55 player in the Rivals 150.

Wednesday was the first day of the early signing period, which runs through Nov. 18.

The Vols would like to sign 6-8 power forward [/b]Tobias Harris, the No. 5 player in the nation according to Rivals.[/b]

Harris, from Dix Hills, N.Y., has visits left to Georgia Tech and Maryland, however, and though he has said he would like to sign early it's not a definite. Louisville, West Virginia and Syracuse also are believed to be among the finalists for Harris' services.

Tennessee could sign up to five players in this class, though the Vols' coaches have hinted they might only sign four.

Along with Harris, the Vols are recruiting power forwards C.J. Leslie (Raleigh, N.C.), Jayvaughn Pinkston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Tarik Black (Memphis).

UT would like to sign two power forwards to go with the guards in this class.

According to Scout.com, the Vols' signing class ranks 16th nationally with the pending signings of McRae and Golden.

UT has a verbal commitment in the Class of 2011 from 6-4 point guard Kenny Ware from Rockdale County High School in Conyers, Ga.

Ware, rated No. 21 in the Rivals 150 in the Class of 2011, is yet another Atlanta Celtics AAU player.

UT coach Bruce Pearl has indicated that 6-2 freshman walk-on Skylar McBee, a 3-point shooting specialist from Grainger High School, will be awarded a scholarship if he continues to progress. McBee turned down scholarship offers from Santa Clara and Marshall to walk on with the Vols with hopes of earning a scholarship after this season.

UT had three guards in the class of 2010 committed at this point last year, McRae along with Josh Selby and Aaron Craft.

Craft, ranked No. 104 by Rivals and from Findlay, Ohio, de-committed once Ohio State started showing interested and is expected to sign with the Buckeyes.

Selby, out of the Baltimore area and ranked No. 4 in the Class of 2010, de-committed after his trip to the LeBron James Nike Camp in Ohio in July.

"It was kind of surprising, because we were pretty good friends,'' McRae said. "Two weeks before he de-committed, we went to France together on a (high school) All-American team, and he was pretty on-board.''

Selby's de-commitment led to well-documented speculation that a Nike shoe representative with strong ties to Kentucky coach Jon Calipari had gotten involved in the recruitment.

Golden said he plans to make the Vols' fans forget about the highly ranked Selby.

"I honestly think I can bring what Tennessee needs,'' Golden said. "I can do just as good of a job as him. I can't wait to get to Knoxville.''

The Vols lose four seniors after this season: post/forward Wayne Chism, power forward Tyler Smith, wing J.P. Prince and point guard Bobby Maze.

There has been speculation that sophomore shooting guard Scotty Hopson might declare himself eligible for the 2010 NBA draft, but Hopson said his focus is strictly on this season. HAHAHHA yeah right

Senior reserve wing Josh Tabb withdrew from classes last month to care for his ailing mother, and Pearl did not rule out Tabb's return for a final year of eligibility.

Tabb, however, was serving an indefinite suspension at the time he left, so there likely would be stipulations before the defensive specialist could return."

With 7:30 minutes left in the first half UT is leading UNC-Asheville 41-6. The interesting thing is that UNC-A hasn't hit a FG yet. HAHAHA

Quote :
"KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Scotty Hopson had a career-high 25 points and No. 10 Tennessee set a school record for points in a game with a 124-49 victory over North Carolina-Asheville on Tuesday night.

It was coach Bruce Pearl’s 100th win with the Volunteers and the 124 points broke Tennessee’s previous single-game record of 121 points, last achieved by the Vols in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA tournament against Long Beach State.

Pearl is the second fastest Vols coach to reach the century mark, having coached in 137 games. It took John Mauer 131 games in the late 1930s and early ’40s to earn 100 wins.

The Vols (2-0) had their way with a Bulldogs team picked to finish second in the Big South Conference, hitting 64.9 percent of their shots from the field in the first half.

J.P. Primm led UNC-Asheville with 13 points.

Hopson outscored all of UNC-Asheville (2-0) at halftime and was two points shy of tying his previous career high of 21. He broke the mark with a 3-pointer at the 18:18 mark in the second half and finished 6 of 7 from behind the arc.

UNC-Asheville didn’t score a field goal until Terrence Turner hit a layup with 3:10 to go in the first half and only had two in 26 attempts by halftime for a mere 7.7 percent shooting.

Tennessee used its full-court pressure defense to force 29 turnovers, scoring 49 points off of them.

Maze added 14 points for the Vols, Cameron Tatum had 13 and Wayne Chism, Melvin Goins and Renaldo Woolridge each scored 11.

Tennessee has won all seven games in the series with UNC-Asheville and won the previous six games by an average of 17 points. All games have been played in Knoxville.

In the Vols’ 87-69 win over the Bulldogs a season ago, Tyler Smith logged the school’s first triple-double in history. That game was also Pearl’s 400th career victory."

oh, and:

Quote :
"Expect Jayvaughn Pinkston to be wearing orange and white next fall.

The 6-6 senior forward from Bishop Loughlin is expected to sign a letter of intent to attend the University of Tennessee on Wednesday afternoon, multiple sources have told the Daily News.

That will end a lengthy recruiting period for Pinkston, who made the Daily News all-city team last year. Big East power Villanova and St. John's were also among the programs vying for his services.

Tennessee will be a solid next step for Pinkston. The Volunteers play an uptempo system that fits Pinkston's tallents, says recruiting analyst Tom Konchalski. Konchalski also expects Pinkston to make an instant impact for coach Bruce Pearl's squad.

"He fits in fine," Konchalski said. "He's a guy who can do a lot of things. He's strong enough, powerful enough that he can be a factor inside. But he can also score from the perimeter. He'll be a great third ball handler. They'll probably run their offense through him because he's a good passer."

Others who have watched Pinkston develop over the past few years agree.

"He's a Brooklyn type of player that can score inside and outside," said Khalid Green, a New Jersey Nets regional scout who used to coach Pinkston at Loughlin. "He'll be good anywhere."

Pinkston averaged 23.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game as a junior at Loughlin last year, leading the Lions to the CHSAA 'AA' semifinals.
"

Quote :
"Bruce Pearl and his staff are rushing to close strong with the 2010 class as the early signing period approaches, but this weekend the Vols took a very strong step towards putting together a highly-regarded 2011 class by picking up a verbal commitment from 2011 five-star prospect Kevin Ware from Rockdale Co. high school in Conyers, Ga.

A classic 'big' point-guard, Ware (6-foot-4, 167 pounds) is rated as the No. 22 overall player in the Class of 2011.

Rivals.com rates Ware as the No. 22 player in the Class of 2011.
He's had Tennessee on top of his list of early favorites since the close of summer, and saw enough during this weekend's unofficial visit to decide to end his recruitment.

When we talked to Ware on Thursday prior to his visit, he told us that Tennessee was his firm favorite, but he was leaning towards holding off on making a commitment.

What changed over the weekend?

"It was just the environment there, everything just felt right with the players and the coaches. I liked everything about it and just knew that I was ready to commit, so I went ahead and did it," Ware said of his decision. "It feels great, I'm happy to have it over with and to know where I'm going to be going to college."

Ware becomes the third commitment--joining 2010 pledges Trae Golden and Jordan McRae--from the powerhouse Atlanta Celtic AAU program to pick the Vols. Current Vol Cameron Tatum also spent his high school summers playing for the program.

It's safe to say that Tennessee--and assistant Tony Jones who recruits the Atlanta area--are building some substantial ties that are paying off on the recruiting front.

Ware acknowledged that the presence of some familiar faces in Knoxville played a key role in his decision.

"Having Jordan and Trae going up there already was big," Ware said of the friendships. "I was a little worried about going to away to college and not having any friends or not knowing anyone, but know I don't have to worry about that at all. I'm real tight with those guys and it's great to know that we're going to be playing together down the road."

Though the payoff is still two years down the road, Vol fans have a right to be legitimately excited about the skills Ware is bringing to the table. A smooth athlete with a very high basketball IQ, he's got a very advanced game for a high-school junior.

A game that his high school coach at Rockdale Co., Al Williams, says is still expanding.

"I knew before I even got here that Kevin was special," Williams recalled. "Before I took the job here I watched the team play the last three or four games of the season, and that was two years ago, when Kevin was a freshman.

"Even though he was playing out of position in the post, it was real obvious to me that he had some special tools. The first thing I did after I got the job was to move him to guard and he's just been great."

Williams also expects Ware to be able to hit the ground running in Tennessee's system because it's a similar style to what he employs at Rockdale Co.

"The system there is going to be a great fit for Kevin. I run the same defense and same offense that coach Pearl runs," Williams said of the fit. "Now he'll obviously have some adjustments to the college game to make, but as far as picking up the system, he'll be dealing with the same concepts that he's played in here for three years."

Tennessee has had some bad experiences in the recent past with early commitments. The Vols famously lost Josh Selby this summer after he committed early in his junior year, and also had a defection from Aaron Craft. On the other hand, McRae never wavered after committing over a year ago, nor did current freshman Kenny Hall.

Taking a commitment this early from a prospect is always going to be a topic for debate, but Williams cautions that Ware isn't your typical 16-year old.

"I don't think that committing so early is the right move for everybody, but in Kevin's case you're not dealing with a normal high-schooler," Williams offered. "He's a very intelligent young man, very mature for his age and capable of making sound decisions.

"As far as Tennessee goes, Kevin saw something that's a great fit for him and he's ready to get this thing over with. I think it's a great move for everyone."

For his part, Ware says he had gotten enough of a glimpse of the recruiting game to know that he wanted no part of the high-pressure environment that can dog un-committed seniors as signing day approaches.

"I could see that things were going to be real hectic after the contact period with coaches in September," Ware said of the impetus behind his early decision. "All the letters and visits and phone calls and stuff were starting to get a little out of hand.

"I knew that I didn't want to put it off for a long time and I knew that Tennessee was where I wanted to go, so there was no reason for me to wait."

Ware said that the two programs he most strongly considered in addition to Tennessee were Georgetown and Georgia Tech."

Pearl's recruiting is getting amazing, fuck the Big East

Wow I thought Pinkston was going to St. John's. He's a little undersized for a PF at 6-6. Supposedly he's trying to transition to the 3 in his senior season.

I miss the orange seats.

Hearing you guys picked up Tobias Harris for next year. Good luck with that nutjob. Good player but wants to run point out of the PF position and wouldn't commit to any coach that wouldn't guarantee him that.

^^ i know a delusional maryland fan who thought sweaty gary had tobias in his sights. Of course, he also thought they had a shot at Lance Stephenson

I was hoping this recruitment would play out longer just to see how insane it gets (the Lance saga was amazing) but congrats to Tennessee either way. I dont know if this guy is a nutjob or not, but his talent is legit. No need to be citing weird Rivals rankings to prop him up

He's a stud... too bad he is kind of an asshole too. Hope you don't have any PGs who actually want to play point on the roster.

^^ haha... Did UMd back off of "Born Ready?" Because pretty much no school wanted him by the end of this recruitment. How did Sweaty not get him if he wanted him? Jeez... He basically begged for a Big East school to take him by the end of his recruitment!

Quote :
"Tobias Harris had the collegiate basketball world at his feet throughout the throes of the recruiting season.

The coaches calling and visiting Harris read like a Hall of Fame induction list: Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino, Bob Huggins and Jim Calhoun.

There was also a trip to visit John Calipari at Kentucky's Big Blue Madness at the official start of the fall basketball practice.

"I thought about all of it,'' said Harris, the No. 1-rated high school power forward in the nation according to Rivals.com. "It came down to the coach that I felt really had my best interests at heart as a player and as a person.''

And that was Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl.

But it wasn't the simple matter of Pearl and the Vols making the 6-foot-8, 215-pound Harris from Half Hollow Hills West High in Glen Head, N.Y., feel a part of their family.

"No, he made us feel special, too, and that's the kind of quality person we're getting,'' UT associate head coach Tony Jones said. "Let me show you something I'm going to keep on this phone forever.''

Jones scrolled down his Blackberry to a text message dated Aug. 19 - the day his father was found murdered in Detroit.

It was a text, from Harris, offering condolences and spiritual well-wishing.

Then, another, dated Aug. 22: Harris told Jones he was dedicating the MVP award he won at the Boost Mobile Elite 24 tournament in New York City to Jones' father.

"When we say Tobias is special, we're not just talking basketball,'' Jones said. "Tennessee fans are going to absolutely love him.''

Harris said the Vols were always at the top of his list, but he held his cards close to his vest.

"You get a lot of calls, people wanting you to come, but you have to control the situation,'' said Harris, who appears poised to take over for current UT senior Tyler Smith. "You can't let it get over your head, and you've got to be true to yourself and know where you want to go.''

Harris took part in UT's elite skills camp in June and visited campus again the second weekend in October when the UT football team routed Georgia.

He admits Syracuse had the lure of being closer to home, but he also revealed that Knoxville somehow found a special place in his heart.

"I really liked Syracuse, but Tennessee has such a great atmosphere,'' Harris said. "It felt more like home, just with my (future) teammates and the campus. I don't think I'll miss home when I'm there.''

Harris felt so strongly about the Vols that he and his father drove up from Atlanta, after taking a visit to Georgia Tech, to watch UT defeat UNC Asheville on Tuesday night.

The idea was to get a "real" look at UT's basketball program, without the red carpet being rolled out.

"It made me realize I really wanted to go there,'' Harris said. "It was just the way Tennessee played and what Tyler was doing on the floor - it was the same things I'll be doing.''

Harris signed the next day and announced his decision live on ESPNU on Thursday.

It was a historical moment for Tennessee basketball, as Harris is the highest-rated prospect the program has ever signed.

"Not since Stu Aberdeen went and recruited Bernard King have we had a Northeast prospect like this,'' Pearl said. "We knew at some point we were going to loser Tyler, and so we've been recruiting Tobias for a couple of years.

"This wouldn't have happened without Tony Jones, and Tobias researched his decision thoroughly.''

Pearl said many schools recruiting against Tennessee told Harris the Vols didn't have many players in the NBA (two).

"He's a top-five kid who picked a top-20 school,'' Pearl said. "But he came to Knoxville and saw how our players go hard, play unselfishly and improve.

"It's why we have the top strength program, the best trainers and assistant coaches because we want all of our players to get better.''

Harris said he's not concerned about any added pressure or attention his arrival at UT may generate.

"I'm just going to come in and play my game and work hard to get to where I can be,'' Harris said. "I know I'll be ready for college.''

Harris said he'll enroll in the first term of summer school, as will point guard Trae Golden (McEachern Ga., High School) and shooting guard Jordan McRae (Liberty County, Ga., High School).

"I've heard about the summer (Pilot Rocky Top League) and all of the guys that play in it,'' Harris said. "I plan on playing in it. It sounds like fun.''"

Huge game tonight.

#10 Tennessee vs. #7 Purdue

Two contrasting styles. UT is an up-and-down-the-court, up tempo team and purdue like the game in the half-court and plays really solid def. I hope Tennessee plays well and wins but it's going to be a tough matchup.

Didn't Pearl have a timeout left when they had the ball with 14 seconds left??

There's always a better shot than Chism at the three point line ftw.

I'm greatly saddened, but hey. Purdue is pretty damn good.
