In your opinion, what would make the design they chose better?

In my opinion, the others were less-than-creative and many used symmetrical sidewalks and a central feature in teh middle of the park - large cumbersome sculpture, fountain, etc. This automatically inhibits the use of this space for concerts and fountains with benches automatically invites bums to spend the night and congregate.

In teh winning design, the use of open space will reduce the occurance of bums and promotes informal/formal gatherings. The raised berm will have a natural place for concerts in an ampitheater style. The playground feature is placed on the side of the park that will have the most visitors and forces users to cross the park to go to other venues located adjacent to the parcel.

If it were me, id leave out the cafe and bathroom.

I will never understand why people are so afraid of the homeless

I don't really understand the hate for the cafe and bathroom. I've been to cities all over the world that have this and it's quite nice. It's all about how it gets implemented. Hell they should just have Starbucks, Caribou, and whoever else fight over who gets to lease the space

I'm kind of mixed on the cafe. I can see how it would be nice, but Moore Square is surrounded by retail (City Market is right there), so I'm not sure it's necessary.

^,^^ then they need to put it on the market side to catch that traffic, and also toward downtown to catch teh largest number of pedestrians. where it is now, it will not catch anything but ghetto bunnies and homeless

Moore Square isn't that big. I can't imagine someone standing on the City Market side of the park and going, "Nope, too far to go."

"I am not sure what is there now as I moved from Raleigh two years ago, but when they built the boathouse as it is now (~2001 or so), the partitions in the bathrooms were pressed laminate partitions and easy to drill a hole through. They must have spent thousands of dollars over the course of the first three or four years replacing those laminate partitions. I assume now they are stainless?"

i hadn't noticed until i read your comment, but i went to the lake on tuesday and sure enough, there are gloryhole-resistant diamondplate panels

The cafe sounds fun. It reminds me of the Milk Street Cafe in Boston, which I thought was fun and convenient.
