^x4 I agree with what he said. I saw this movie a few months ago when my girlfriend got to pick the movie (she usually likes good movies, but I guess sometimes she gets in the mood for a corny chick flick) and both of us thought it was awful and so subliminally racist it wasn't funny. You kids need to watch The Wire; it will change the way you look at these things.

The relationship between the little white kid and the main character reminds me of Huck and Jim in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. A white kid who is much younger than the black character and the black character are portrayed as equals. There's something racist in the roots of that, no matter what else happens. People still debate over whether Twain's depiction was intentional or whether he was a little bit racist himself and I guess that argument could take place for this movie as well. But I tend to think Mark Twain had a better sense of the subconscioius actions of his work then whoever wrote this piece-of-garbage movie.
^That's not it. You have to accept minorities as equals, without it initially being conditional. Otherwise, there is some racism in what you're doing. Judging people by their actions, however, is another debate.

People keep making this argument about it being racist because it took a white family to make a black guy successful. Here is the chain of events:
1) White family takes in black guy who has no home. Due to this "upbringing" he is able to avoid falling into the same fate of the vast majority of poor, black people from the area where he is from (True Story) 2) Michael Lewis, an author who has made a name for himself by being as honest as possible, writes a book about this true story. 3) Hollywood then makes a movie, based on the book (pretty accurately), which is based on a true story.
WHAT IS RACIST? 4/22/2010 3:18:56 PM |

^^So, essentially, your argument boils down to this:
1) The Blind Side is based on a true story. 2) Michael Lewis is an honest writer. 3) The movie followed the book pretty accurately.
Therefore, the movie is not racist. Did I miss something? Is there not racism in real life? 4/22/2010 3:29:02 PM |

I'm pretty sure they "risked" bringing him into their home because they were huge Ole Miss boosters and they thought he could help bring the Ole Miss football program back to prominence. Also, I haven't seen the movie but in the previews it definitely seemed like the white characters talked down to the Michael Oher character, like he was a retard incapable of understanding complex thoughts. 4/22/2010 3:48:37 PM |

This is such a retarded argument...they have a 15 year old daughter, younger son, and all kinds of valuable shit in their house.
And people think they would bring in a giant homeless kid into their house on the slight offchance that he might become an incredible football player? Wow 4/22/2010 3:51:04 PM |

Right. That prominent white family of Ole Miss boosters scooped that Negro right up off the football field before anyone else could get him.
For the love of Christ, did you watch the movie? He didn't even know how to play football until they showed him how.

you might want to read up on his story a little more before you reveal yourself as a fool, he was a highly regarded offensive lineman before he was adopted by the Tuohys...he was the division 2A lineman of the year and first team all-state in Tennessee in 2003, a year before he was taken in and later adopted by them.

I stand corrected on the football argument. I still don't believe they would risk what they risked simply based on that...but that isn't what I'm arguing here anyways.
As for him being talked down to by other people..

his academic struggles were well documented throughout his education. He did have a hard time understanding complex topics when they weren't presented to him in a way he could visualize them...this is not racist

Obviously you aren't very familiar with how crazy people are about SEC football, haha. I'm sure that they got to know him some before they invited him to stay with them, but it seems obvious to me that their primary reason for taking him in was to steer him towards Ole Miss. Also, in the movie they make it seem like he can't play football for shit until the kindly white people teach him (which is patently false, and Michael Oher specifically addressed this in an interview on ESPN), which could certainly be construed as racist. I'm not going to argue about his supposedly well document academic struggles, but to me the scene where they are saying to "pretend the QB is your family, you've got to protect your family" felt very condescending.4/22/2010 4:19:31 PM |

i'm saying:
are the directors and producers personally racists, who are projecting racism when they make the film?
or is the movie trying to be factual, and part of that is by showing people who are racists?
cause in the former, i'd consider the movie 'racist', in the latter i'd say they were just keeping it real
is the movie Roots racist? or is it a movie that shows how racist people were? cause i think there is a huge difference] 12/27/2010 10:19:41 PM |
