The owner offered to comp their food because they realized that the service sucked... then called the cops on an unpaid "gratuity". Something doesn't add up.11/20/2009 11:11:11 AM |

The fact that you can eat $200 worth of food in one sitting at TGIFridays still astounds me.11/20/2009 11:13:26 AM |

its not optional, its a percentage of the bill 11/20/2009 11:13:35 AM |

my group went out for dinner at a brew pub one night and they were extremely busy, and every single one of the 21 orders was fucked up, and took an exorbitent amount of time.
the manager comped our $720 tab, but we still tipped as if that didnt happen.
wasn't the waitress' fault that the kitchen was behind as shit and nothing was cooked right (like, of the three burgers, two were completely raw, and one was a brick). she kept our beers full and the like.
that resturaunt got our business again and again. 11/20/2009 11:16:50 AM |

Most people could be served human feces and would return if their 700 dollar bill was compled
and I loathe going out with any group bigger than 8-10
that seems to be the threshold for most waiters to not fuck up multiple orders
any bigger than that, and they get all sorts of confused 11/20/2009 11:21:32 AM |

Gratuity: something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service (MW dictionary)
You are never under obligation to pay even added gratuity for large parties. In the event of poor service (which even the management seems to admit happened) contesting the auto-grat and paying a lesser % or even none is def legal, and should be done more often 11/20/2009 11:25:55 AM |

I started tipping a dollar or two on everything since I lost my job. I tipped about ~20-30% for the past 6 years, so I figure that I can still ride the karma train for a while.

although i feel like i tip well when i go out, i still think tipping as a requirement is a shitty practice in general. too often it is "required" and esp in bigger parties, the staff acts like they dont give a fuck because they know its coming regardless 11/20/2009 12:54:52 PM |

sounds like the manager is lying that they offered to comp the food.
and honestly, even if the pub is busy and the food is taking a long time, waitresses/waiters should be able to handle getting their people silverware and keeping drinks full.
if they can't do their job, they don't deserve the tip.
(and yes i've waited tables for about 6 years off and on) 11/20/2009 12:58:08 PM |

I don't think it'll hurt the restaurant as much as you might think...especially if they've been around for a while. I guarantee you a lot of people look at couple and say, "cheap, uptight fuckers." And the people who do look at the restaurant in a bad light either look at is an isolate incident or probably don't make up a large portion of their clientele anyways.

Why even go out?? Even with tipping shitty, you're still spending a lot more money than if you had just stayed in. Let the servers/bartenders spend their time on people that will actually make them some money.

It depends on the restaurant. For some reason Sammy's is still open despite having horrible service pretty much all of the time. Their food is alright.
Also, I have had my food comped a few times, I always still tipped on what the check would have been. If the kitchen fucks up the food the waiter is not to blame.11/20/2009 3:50:04 PM |

the article makes it sound like it wasn't just the kitchen that was behind, the couple involved say they had to take their drinks up to the bar to get refills since their waitress never came to check on them, says they had to go get their own silverware and napkins, etc. They also deny that they were ever offered comped food. the owner of the restaurant says his managers did, but I'll bet thats just bullshit his manager told him to try to avoid getting fired (If I were a restaurant owner I would fire someone over this, this is not going to end well for this restaurant)

You never *offer* to comp food.
You go over and say "Sir, Madam, we apologize for this mess. Your meals are on the house."
That's how you know that the "we offered" is bullshit to begin with. Food costs are nothing compared to bad publicity. Anyone with half a fucking brain knows that.

While this might be the case at some places, everywhere I know leaves the option of whether or not to grat a table up to the waiter.
Also,
