you still have to pay the gratuity dudeits not optional, its a percentage of the bill
11/20/2009 11:13:35 AM
I'd pay it but would not go back to that restaurant ever again. End of subject.

my group went out for dinner at a brew pub one night and they were extremely busy, and every single one of the 21 orders was fucked up, and took an exorbitent amount of time.the manager comped our $720 tab, but we still tipped as if that didnt happen.wasn't the waitress' fault that the kitchen was behind as shit and nothing was cooked right (like, of the three burgers, two were completely raw, and one was a brick). she kept our beers full and the like.that resturaunt got our business again and again.

Most people could be served human feces and would return if their 700 dollar bill was compledand I loathe going out with any group bigger than 8-10that seems to be the threshold for most waiters to not fuck up multiple ordersany bigger than that, and they get all sorts of confused

Gratuity: something given voluntarily or beyond obligation usually for some service (MW dictionary)You are never under obligation to pay even added gratuity for large parties. In the event of poor service (which even the management seems to admit happened) contesting the auto-grat and paying a lesser % or even none is def legal, and should be done more often

I started tipping a dollar or two on everything since I lost my job. I tipped about ~20-30% for the past 6 years, so I figure that I can still ride the karma train for a while.[Edited on November 20, 2009 at 11:59 AM. Reason : f]

i tip for good service, i don't tip shit for shitty service
11/20/2009 12:20:17 PM
although i feel like i tip well when i go out, i still think tipping as a requirement is a shitty practice in general. too often it is "required" and esp in bigger parties, the staff acts like they dont give a fuck because they know its coming regardless
11/20/2009 12:54:52 PM
sounds like the manager is lying that they offered to comp the food. and honestly, even if the pub is busy and the food is taking a long time, waitresses/waiters should be able to handle getting their people silverware and keeping drinks full. if they can't do their job, they don't deserve the tip.(and yes i've waited tables for about 6 years off and on)

the article makes it sound like it wasn't just the kitchen that was behind, the couple involved say they had to take their drinks up to the bar to get refills since their waitress never came to check on them, says they had to go get their own silverware and napkins, etc. They also deny that they were ever offered comped food. the owner of the restaurant says his managers did, but I'll bet thats just bullshit his manager told him to try to avoid getting fired (If I were a restaurant owner I would fire someone over this, this is not going to end well for this restaurant)[Edited on November 20, 2009 at 6:49 PM. You never *offer* to comp food. You go over and say "Sir, Madam, we apologize for this mess. Your meals are on the house."That's how you know that the "we offered" is bullshit to begin with. Food costs are nothing compared to bad publicity. Anyone with half a fucking brain knows that.[Edited on November 20, 2009 at 8:28 PM. Reason : also did someone say bbq?]
