Jack's performance failed because Jack thought it was good. He believed all the mugging and over-the-top theatrics were a good idea, and nobody told him differently because he's Jack. Had he approached the job humbled and inspired, with something to prove—he might have submitted a classic performance.

speaking of reference- anyone got a link for breaking each character down? all i really need is picture, character name, and actor name

i am awful at remembering names with faces (especially new characters) and usually end up giving people nicknames (like Brows, Dudesy, Wonky, etc) and it doesn't work well later on down the road

they definitely didnt fuck with too much of an introduction to the characters in episode 1. basically threw em straight into war...i think it is going to be a nice contrast to BoB where they gave extensive insight into the characters before sending em into battle. Here, I suspect we get to know the characters as the show goes along. Wonder if they use flashback techniques.

solid episode overall. i liked the Alligator Creek scene. that one jap in the river was nuts, and the one who faked being dead.

definitely liked it. the intro was pretty cool as well. Tom Brokaw was right when he labeled the men and women of WWII as the "greatest generation." Hard to imagine myself in that scenario.

All this BOB talk got the damn Outkast song stuck in my head.

This is pretty minor, but one of my biggest problems with BoB was that the average age of the characters was probably around 20 and the vast majority of actors involved were over 30.

they have lucked out that Jon Seda, who is playing John Basilone, actually seems to look younger than he did on Homicide: Life on the Street. He's actually 40 this year.

and James Badge Dale for that matter, who is 32.

Yeah look at any high school movie, most of the principal actors are 25+.

If you look at high school kids irl, most of them look like Michael Cera, and no one wants to see some skinny pizza faced kid manning a .50 cal.

yeah, "the professor" is Robert Leckie - he's also the author of one of the main books the storyline is based on. From what I've read, he will definitely be one of the main characters.

I wasn't blown away by the first part. I liked it and will definitely continue to watch it. But that's based more on the potential I think it has than on what I've seen so far.

I've got a stack of 1942 Life magazines and the majority of reporting they did on the pacific was pictures of many dead japs, just like the showed in the aftermath of Alligator Creek.

I was actually pretty impressed by that.

^^ Regardless, I feel like the power of the "greatest generation" was the fact that they were off fighting a brutal war as kids. Brushing their youth aside seems like a big mistake to me.

while very costly in terms of lives the japanese army during this time did not have very advanced tactics, overly relying on the massed infantry charge, resulting in the massive casualties that are depicted.

i couldn't help but wonder (and continue to wonder)...

when they go out and field japanese actors to film this show, do you think they have any bad sentimens to do it? i mean, sure its acting, but there's still very strong anti-Japanese repercussions seen today. I just wonder if its a strange paradox between American and Japanese actors.

Also, it was the last legitimate war that [after Pearl Harbor] had nearly unanimous backing on the home front in this country. I doubt many people who fought in Vietnam are thought of in the same way though the sacrifices they made were just as great.
