I personally lol'd at the sodium question... (And it wasn't directed at the father)

So much parental disrespect in this thread. My mom never went to college but I would never assume she wasn't smart enough or that there are things "she should know." Woman owned 4 business at the same time for over 10 years soooo I'm sure she could run circles around me in the business world.

Neither of my parents are college-educated in the traditional sense (Dad eventually got an EE degree from UNC-Charlotte while he worked), but both are plenty intelligent, especially in the common sense and life lessons department. So sure, I can waste their time talking about how doctors use statistical regressions in choosing the best operating method prior to a procedure based on your particular situation. My dad can do the same thing talking about the different polymers used in grounding cables.

We are smart in our own fields.

Oh, and he still says "libary" instead of "library"

I've never had the opportunity to correct my parents on something thats common sense. Never. My parents have always been smarter than me. I think it's going to take Alzheimers for me to finally get an edge.

My parents are pretty bright, but to this day, my dad does not understand computers at all, even simple things, like file attachments and blind carbon copying over email. Being computer illiterate isn't an indicator of lack of intelligence, many older medical doctors and doctors of philosophy are clueless. I don't know if it's really his fault, he started learning pretty late in life, and his eye sight isn't great anymore. My mom gets it, but she loves technology, and is a massive nerd. The other day she was so proud of her spreadsheet in Excel she asked me to come marvel at it's perfection.

I fucking hate when people put an S on things that dont have them. Barnes and nobles, paneras, big easy-s

it doesnt make any sense and i dont know why it pisses me off so much but it certainly does

"for the record, table salt is only ike fifty-something percent sodium"

I thought this was pretty universal knowledge, hence the posting.

I can't really defend my post, the prior defense notwithstanding. It just seemed rather inane at the time and apropos to the thread. It would also help if you knew my dad. Meh.

"Sometimes I forget that my folks only have high school education. My nephew was playing with a helium balloon last night and my dad poses the question "what is helium?" the conversation went something like this:

dad: What you reckon helium is anyway?
me: its a naturally occuring element, the 2nd element on periodic table. you know, the first of the noble gases. but i don't know how or where its extracted.
dad: oh...is there any oxygen in helium?
me: "

This is something we learned in high school if not earlier.
