Miami travels because of bandwagoners across the country. And EVERYONE watches Miami. Just because the tiny student population along with the indifferent population of the city doesn't consistently fill up Landshark doesn't mean any given bowl doesn't want this team.

If we want to get serious, the super bowl is as meaningless as a preseason game in August but I'd rather not get nihilistic.



College football just isn't a playoff oriented league. I personally would rather watch 33 bowl games featuring players all playing out of their minds in their respective super bowl than a playoff, which would destroy this. The bowl system is unique and fun, and makes regular season games incredibly important, more so than in any other league. And giving the damn Boise State Broncos some peace of mind with a playoff is not worth killing that.

And a year with this many undefeated teams is absolutely freakish, and if you think a playoff system wouldn't make the number of pissed off schools increase exponentially, you're kidding yourself.

I'll be honest... I haven't been interested in Miami at all the last five years. I don't even care who they play in a bowl game.

Everything? Because your contradicting that statement with an obvious opinion. The Big East would have had a NC game rep had WVU not choked two years ago and were next in line after Texas this year. Even if they had 10 or 12 teams they weren't moving ahead of Texas...

The Miami/FSU game this year was the most watched college football game of all time at one point (until the OSU/Michigan game I think).

Emerald Bowl attendance was over capacity last year.

Miami doesn't fill up their own stadium due to a city that doesn't give a shit an a 10K undergrad student body, of course they aren't going to fill their allotment of tickets to a non-conference thanksgiving weekend game against an unranked opponent 3 hours away.

Pretty sure the FSU and even UCF tickets sold out, though, fwiw.

And if the Big East had 12 teams they would have a conference championship game and instantly gain credibility. What you're saying just means they've had one standout team per year and are more prestigious than the WAC, which I'm not disputing.

But yeah if Miami took half their allotment in a lower tier bowl across the country in a 7-5 year I highly doubt that they weren't sending decent crowds to bowls in their big east domination years, especially with what was likely a high contingency of bandwagoners across the country.

What are you even talking about? You're making zero sense, I said nothing that would even remotely suggest that that's how I feel. I think he should be allowed to coach FSU until he no longer wants to. But I also think his just having his pick of a bowl game is kind of fucked up. There are 3 or 4 teams that worked harder and won way more games that just have to take a back seat because he said so. This isn't comparable to NCSU getting Gator over UMD with a slightly better record. This is 9-3 and 8-4 vs. 6-6. Hell, they are going to a better bowl than the team that won their division. I understand that it makes financial sense for the Gator Bowl, I'm not disputing that.

Bowls are about 1 thing and one thing only - money. A decisive national champion doesn't sell tickets for Bowl promoters.

Something like you describe wouldn't work because you couldn't expect fans to travel that many times so close together. The majority of bowls would end up making a lot less money. The only way a playoff with over a couple of teams would work well is with additional games at the teams' stadiums like in the pretty much all other football leagues. Even with a 2 + 1 format, the fans of the teams in the national championship would have to travel once the 1st week of Dec to a conf championship game (assuming they come from a conf with a championship), again a week or two later to a 1st round game, and again in early Jan to a championship game. Most fans would only be able to go to 1 or 2 of the games at most. Look how much even the conference championship games have changed how fan bases travel to Bowl games.
