They're already getting paid legally. The opportunity to go to college for 4-5 years AND for free I think is plenty of "pay" for your typical NCAA scholarship athlete.

2. majority of schools lose money with their athletic programs, so that argument is thrown out *don't know specifics...but have seen in a few articles where very few programs bring in a profit in the end

Someone earlier inferred this, but I am going to say it directly.
If they are being paid unofficially now, how does officially paying them make it any better?
Hypothetically: I make $0 now but the university pays me $1,000 unofficially. Change the rules so players can be paid - I make $1,000 now but the university can now more easily disguise payments since money is already changing hands and gives me $10,000 now.
Yeah, your solution sure sounds like it would fix the problem... 12/25/2009 5:58:30 PM |

but if there are no rules then there will be parity because you won't have schools "taking the high road" to not pay athletes and every schools boosters will just give whatever gifts they want.
I'm not suggesting the school payroll include athletes, I'm just saying theres no rule on people related to the school paying athletes or giving them gifts of any kind. 12/25/2009 10:00:15 PM |

Did expect paid athletes. Did not expect union, especially before paid bit was put through. This is the final nail though. Nothing stopping them from here.
Now waiting for first strike/lockout.
Side bit, Waiting for universities to have to start providing insurance under obamacare

Real simple. If the are good enough to go pro out of high school, let them go. If not, they are using the university training facilities, coaching, and tv exposure get a shot at the nba, thus they are getting paid already. Yes the colleges make money off of them, no they are not entitled to that money. Go play in the effing china league with Richard Howell if you want that money so bad.

^^They don't need to be paid by the school or ncaa, but if johnny manziel can do a commercial after winning a heisman and get paid what normal athletes are paid for it, it shouldn't make him ineligible to ever play again.

if you pay them that will be a salary to replace the tuition, room and board, free clothes, meals, etc.
95% of them will come out with less 100% of the time. Basketball and football players at a small % of school will break even or actually benefit financially from being "paid" 3/27/2014 11:17:21 PM |

I too went to college on a meal plan. It's all you can eat at the dining hall. And that wasn't even at the Case Dining Hall that actually had good food. And many a night I had to eat Ramen Noodles and Nabs and peanut butter sandwiches. I probably ordered pizza twice through my first two years of college.
I understand some of the arguments for paying players, but I really don't think they're starving. 4/8/2014 12:22:20 PM |
