^ my thoughts exactly. In addition to the great action scenes throughout the movie, the laughs were very abundant in my theatre. Great fuckin movie overall imo 4/18/2010 11:46:48 PM |

The laughs were many and well done, the action scenes were absolutely great--and I thought they'd be terrible--and the melodrama was at just the right balance of "I really don't care" and "breakdown/humor". I was looking forward to this movie and I have no problems calling it worthwhile to see. There's going to be people who can't appreciate what this film does, and it's the same people who might watch Hot Tub Time Machine and not laugh because they didn't want to seem like plebes.
It was good, I liked it, and I loved the gratuitous violence. 4/19/2010 3:17:14 AM |

I enjoyed it immensely. I can't fathom why someone who isn't offended by it (the language, the violence, etc) would find it terrible. Smath, would you care to go into detail, or are you just trolling? 4/21/2010 7:44:37 PM |

I'll have to admit, as much as liked the rest of the movie, the zip zoomin through the city on the jet pack was a little too 90's cheesemo for me. It looked pretty bad. I liked everything else and would definitely recommend though. 4/21/2010 10:32:43 PM |

^ I completely agree with that. There really wasnt much else in the movie where it was too over the top. Except when hit-girl did the wall flip, but even that wasn't too bad. Aside from those two parts the movie was as realistic as you could hope for given the material. 4/22/2010 12:26:33 AM |

Just so its clear, Ebert isn't really upset about violence being played for laughs. He says he is, but he isn't.
If he really felt that way, he wouldn't heap praise on top of movies like Pulp Fiction: http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20010610/REVIEWS08/106100301/1023
What *really* offends Ebert is violence played for laughs by an 11 year old girl. That's why seriously half of his review is directed at Hit Girl instead of the title character. http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100414/reviews/100419986
And thats fine. I just wished he made it clear that his disappointment with this movie wasn't the violence itself, but the identity of the person inflicting it. If it was a fast-talking black man he would be fine. But a little white girl? Well, that's pushing it over the line....

^2 That's stupid... I liked Hit Girl because I mean, I'm sure there are many kids out there who have to "grow up fast" and not have a childhood like her. She was not only relatable in the sense that she did not have an easy life but you also have to love her for the major balls that she had and her love for her dad! 5/2/2010 6:42:29 PM |

It's not the violence by an 11 year old girl, it's the violence against her. 5/2/2010 8:18:55 PM |

Well, I'm just talking about Ebert's opinion and his problem seems to be with the actual violence inflicted by the characters of the movie and their lack of emotional response to it (especially the character of Hit Girl):
Quote : | "The movie's premise is that ordinary people, including a high school kid, the 11-year-old and her father, try to become superheroes in order to punish evil men. The flaw in this premise is that the little girl does become a superhero. In one scene, she faces a hallway jammed with heavily armed gangsters and shoots, stabs and kicks them all to death, while flying through the air with such power, it's enough to make Jackie Chan take out an AARP membership.
This isn't comic violence. These men, and many others in the film, are really stone-cold dead. And the 11-year-old apparently experiences no emotions about this. Many children that age would be, I dunno, affected somehow, don't you think, after killing eight or 12 men who were trying to kill her?
...
The little girl is named Mindy (Chloe Grace Moretz). She adopts the persona of Hit Girl. She has been trained by her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage), to join him in the battle against a crime boss (Mark Strong). Her training includes being shot at point-blank range while wearing a bulletproof vest. She also masters the martial arts — more, I would say, than any other movie martial artist of any age I can recall. She's gifted with deadly knife-throwing; a foot-long knife was presented to her by Dad as, I guess, a graduation present.
Big Daddy and Mindy never have a chat about, you know, stuff like how when you kill people, they are really dead. This movie regards human beings like video-game targets. Kill one, and you score. They're dead, you win. When kids in the age range of this movie's home video audience are shooting one another every day in America, that kind of stops being funny." |
A stirring line...until you realize you could rephrase it to heap moral indignation on almost any violent movie. But you certainly won't find any similar line in Ebert's review of say Pulp Fiction.
Not that I am defending Kick-Ass. I haven't seen it yet so I have no idea if I would be offended by its contents (though I probably will eventually watch it when it makes its way to Blockbuster). I'm just saying Ebert's reaction strikes me as odd given his reviews of other films.

I didn't find the Hit Girl violence particularly disturbing or anything. Just really silly in a bad way. Which also describes the entire 30 minutes I watched.

I, too, saw the first trailers long ago and thought this movie looked absolutely awful and ridiculous, but after saying 'what the hell' and checking it out at blueridge, I can say that this movie blew away my expectations and I absolutely loved every minute of it.

Just got it on Netflix and watched it with my wife and buddy of mine. He and I loved it, she thought it was okay, but wouldn't care to watch it again. She is one of those that thinks cunt is the most foul word in the dictionary, and she didn't like the violence from Hit Girl. But she's not into ultra-violent movies anyways, and of course my friend and I fucking loved it. It was not the greatest movie ever, but it totally exceeded my expectations. A very pleasant surprise, and I look forward to the sequel. 8/11/2010 4:25:28 PM |

Just saw it this weekend on bluray. Decent movie, but I'm not going to say it was that intelligent of a movie. This plot has been done before. This one is just done better than the others. Action scenes were top-notch, but that was probably because it was over compensated for by the ridiculously cute and awesome Hit Girl. 8/30/2010 2:37:37 PM |
