Just saw it this afternoon...I haven't read the rest of the thread, so this may just be a rehash of previous comments, but I loved it. I rewatched the original last week, and this one stayed faithful to the original (down to a lot of the dialogue), yet still managed to cut it's own great path.
Definite recommend. 12/28/2010 6:30:45 PM |

pretty good movie, likely a shoe-in for best screenplay. i realize it was being authentic to the times, but the whole movie all i could think was "use a fucking contraction!"
didn't really like how they introduced josh brolin's character either, but that's nitpicky.
i guess jeff bridges is the new daniel day lewis 12/29/2010 5:17:52 PM |

Bridges and Damon were both very fun to watch.
I just thought that at times it was too heavy on comic relief and not enough on intensity. Very few scenes if any had me at the edge of my seat.
Brolin's charater was a little more lighthearted than i would expect for a man being hunted down by a Texas Ranger. He didn't come off as a dangerous villain at all, and I thought that the movie would have been a bit better had he have a bit more evil in him. He was quite disappointing.

I came away disappointed.
The acting was great, humor was spot on.
The thing just felt disjointed. The focus, I thought, was the girl finding her fathers killer. I thought that pretty much played 2nd fiddle to Cogburn taking on the 'gang' at the end.
The end was just bizzare. They leave La Boeuf out in the woods, then they have that weird sequence that just took me completely out of the movie.
Oh and our main character turns out to be a crotchety old maid that noone would like.
I guess I had high hopes for it. Ive never read the book or seen the original. The dialog I really liked. 12/30/2010 5:22:43 PM |

Yeah the ending came way too quickly. I feel like they should've tagged on an additional 10-15 minutes so it didn't feel so rushed. I didn't really like the epilogue type thing at the end either. 12/31/2010 12:22:30 PM |

Like the others ITT I think that the ending was rushed and depressing. However, the rest of the movie (minus the last 20 minutes) was awesome - well shot, well directed, great dialogue, great actors and supporting actors. But the end, damn man. 1/3/2011 12:19:02 AM |

my one critique is that I thought it all seemed to bunch up at the end
a little off on that facet of pacing 1/4/2011 1:48:07 PM |

Saw this two nights ago with my Dad, I haven't laughed that hard at a movie in the long time. The dialogue and speech was just superb, I can't really compare it to anything else in the genre. The film was simply good. The ending had some inconsistencies in pace, but that's more to do with the novel and the Coen Bros. It was tolerable to me. I didn't think the ending was "bad", and certainly not disappointing, but maybe a bit quick.
"I do not recognize this man."
The whole exchange between Maddie and the horse merchant was amazing though.
And the traveling doctor with a bear skin.
Damnit there's way too many good encounters. 1/5/2011 2:55:25 AM |

Once a horse has been run that hard, it becomes lame and is suffering to death, hence putting it down. It was the humane thing to do. 1/5/2011 9:41:30 AM |

^^No, run a horse so hard you have to stab it with a knife to get it to keep running.
Not just hard.
At that point it's like "Well this fucker is going to die. Better put him out of his misery." 1/6/2011 12:25:37 AM |

I haven't seen or read any of the original material. I thought that Cogburn was going to carry the girl until he died after he ran the pony to death. I thought that would have been a more poetic ending.

John Wayne wasn't as much an actor as he was an icon. I mean I loved John Wayne, but he played the same character in 99% of his movies. 1/14/2011 12:28:11 AM |

Watching the original True Grit, I get the feeling that he was too conscious of being John Wayne to really become Rooster Cogburn. Though some of his work with John Ford shows a vulnerability that lacks in something like True Grit. 1/14/2011 7:05:27 AM |

I loved every single scene, but I did come away thinking that each scene didn't link all that well together with the overall story.
Still I'll give it a 9/10 because I was laughing my tits off for the duration (which, judging by other people in the theater, was probably not the intended reaction, but like I give a fuck) and because the bad-ass was off the charts. 1/15/2011 12:11:19 AM |
