Lets not forget that that Alien is hot in pretty much every category.
I'm going to go ahead and say that Zoe Saldana is officially the Geek Sex Goddess.

I feel like if we did make it possible to resettle there then the nerds would be the first to get eaten by the jungle monsters.
The main dude was a hardass marine and he almost got eaten 5 times in the first half of the movie. 1/11/2010 1:54:23 PM |

"Living like the Na'vi"? Really? What the fuck is that horse shit?
I can't stand it when a bunch of luddite morons get on their horse about how awful technology and how great nature is and how we'd all be happier and more fulfilled if we went back to nature. It's one of the themes that surely would have irked me about this movie had I not been too busy looking at the pretty pictures.
And that's aside from the fact that we don't have magical nerve endings on our heads that are shared by every other goddamn species on the planet, or carbon fiber bones that make us hard to kill. We're frail as shit. You know who came closest in recent memory to "living like the Na'vi?" The Native Americans on whom they are obviously based. Remember what happened to them?
James Cameron needs to make a short sequel for the web in which the human race returns to Pandora with all of its vast military power, bombs the shit out of everything, and takes all its resources without batting an eye. Remind these pantystains that for billions of years, proximity to nature has meant proximity to death, either from nature itself or by the awesome ass-hammer of technology. 1/11/2010 2:23:23 PM |

the writing wasn't great but let's be honest, the point of the film was not the story
i appreciated the fact that the story was simple and stayed out of the way. i would have gotten lost due to paying attention to the visuals so much 1/11/2010 2:38:34 PM |

It's the same shit that pisses me off about "Walden:" "Oh, I'll go live in this cabin I bought and paid for in the middle of the woods, and live in perfect harmony with nature, except for all the times I go into town to get my laundry done and buy supplies."
Or the "indigenous peoples" fan clubs, who go on and on about how the natives would never destroy their environment, except for those times they hunted all those megafauna into extinction.
Life in nature is not admirable. It is not desirable. I don't care if there are no trees left on Earth, it still beats the hell out of a planet full of gigantic goddamn dinosaur things that all want to kill you. 1/11/2010 2:44:56 PM |

i did get wrapped up in it, but not in a depressed omgsuicide kind of way. it was really intense/lots of action, and i cried when that horse thing was on fire...but i am a girl and i get really easily emotionally involved in shows and movies.
i liked the movie. when i left i was exhausted and sore from sitting there tensing every muscle in my body the whole time. i said i never wanted to watch it again but now that i'm over it, i'd like to see it again. not in 3d this time. you lose so much color and brightness to those 3d glasses. 1/11/2010 2:49:07 PM |

It's anti-exploitation and environmentalist. I think it's a good package for that, too, seeing as how our unbelievably stupid population (plus kids) could use these sorts of messages.1/11/2010 2:51:52 PM |

Well, there aren't any "gigantic dinosaur things" that want to kill you on Earth now and we're razing forests so we can plant farms for food for countries that aren't remotely trying to control their population. I'd also argue that life in nature is far more desirable to an overcrowded planet because that future won't be like some George Lucas fantasy city planet, but more like the layout of modern Mumbai.
If you think THAT is desirable, you probably should seek some help.1/11/2010 2:52:04 PM |

In general kids' movies are to the point, simple, and the plots don't have many twists or turns. Also, the language tends to be simpler because kids are still learning.

Youth Mental Health Problems On The Rise 01/11/10
Quote : | "CHICAGO — A new study has found that five times as many high school and college students are dealing with anxiety and other mental health issues as youth of the same age who were studied in the Great Depression era.
The findings, culled from responses to a popular psychological questionnaire used as far back as 1938, confirm what counselors on campuses nationwide have long suspected as more students struggle with the stresses of school and life in general." |

None of those things mean that it also has to be bad.
The Iron Giant is an example of a movie that is aimed at children but enjoyable for everyone because it's a goddamn brilliant film.

^^ But to actually use what is recognized as a catch-all term when you could easily give it a much better specific name is ridiculous.
^ I generally stay away from non-musical science because I don't know much about it and I recognize that fact. But we're talking about writing.
The fact is that James Cameron has made two good films in his life and he made them both in the three year period from 1986 to 1989.
