Good thing we all have the enlightened cultured Mr. McDanger Philosopher to guide us in our quest to become more worldly and cultured.
If not for him, we wouldn't know that not only is the hummus sold in stores "crappy bullshit", but also that our homemade hummus is "terrible shit".'
Thank you Mr. McDanger Philosopher, you have saved us... we bow to your superiority. 2/23/2010 5:26:41 AM |

^ Check Whole (Paycheck) Foods or Fresh Market. I can find black bean hummus at my local Whole Foods, but it's produced by a local Lebanese establishment. You can also make it home pretty easily.

Perhaps you should check out the definition to "bougie." http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=bougie
Wearing only True Religion Jeans? Bougie. Eating hummus? Not so much. It's dirt cheap, yet delicious. Also, there's hummus in America. Maybe not in Pittsburgh, but there is great, authentic Mediterranean/Middle Eastern food to be found in this country if you know where to look.

Here's a recipe if you'd prefer to make it at home:
Black Bean Hummus
* 2 15-ounce cans black beans, rinsed, drained * 3/4 cup tahini (sesame seed paste)* * 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice * 1/4 cup (packed) chopped fresh cilantro * 4 green onions, sliced * 2 tablespoons olive oil * 2 large garlic cloves, minced * 1 teaspoon ground cumin * 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper * Pita bread rounds, cut into triangles
Combine first 9 ingredients in processor until smooth. Season hummus to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon hummus into bowl. Serve with pita triangles.

what a great reason to learn how to use it 2/23/2010 9:12:47 AM |

Yes!
I should also mention that if you don't absolutely love the taste of it when you make it, add more lemon juice. I always find that I have to add more lemon juice to most hummus recipes.
Also, let it sit in the fridge overnight. That will allow the seasonings to really permeate the mixture. 2/23/2010 9:18:05 AM |

It's from Wegmons. They do it alright. Best I ever had was in an arab village called Abu Ghosh. I swear its worth the trip back over there to get that again. I would bathe in that stuff were it socially acceptable. 2/23/2010 12:15:14 PM |

you know what even better than hummus? theres this stuff called labia or labellina they sell at the middle-eastern resturant behind the wafflehouse on hillsborough. it like white creamy hummus. also baba-ganoush is really good. That place is soooo delicious, I wonder if it's still there. 2/23/2010 12:23:54 PM |

Labneh?
That's basically strained yogurt (Greek yogurt). I love it.

yup i'd say Labneh is closer to Tzatziki than it is to Hummus (consistency-wise)
and i totally beat you

granted, i usually make my own, but when you get down to the pure economics of it there's not much difference
if you're not making in a large quantity, the material cost vs. purchase price just isnt that much.
esp if you value your time (ie, i find it to be a pain in the balls to adequately clean my food processor blades, and it takes like 10 minutes). I can be convinced that my 10 minutes is worth more than the $0.75 difference in cost.2/23/2010 7:05:11 PM |
