luckily the tacoma I bought last august is only on the floor mat list. I still don't see how anyone with any sort of common sense could get those all weather mats hung under the gas pedal.

this story alone has pretty much insured that i will never buy a toyota. i'm that's stupid, but i can't help it. i guess maybe i could make an exception if they started producing supras again.

He may not have announced he was suing yet, however one could wonder if there is/was more to this, considering that the guy is in almost $900,000 of debt, has declared bancrupcy before. He also refused to shift the car into neutral, nor use the engine stop button, despite being asked to do so by the 911 operator.

Wow, even if you take away the probability that this all occurred due to a defect with the toyota, what kind of sense does it make to send a man to prison for 8 years for a vehicular death that was deemed a mistake (they concluded that he accidentally must have hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes aka, driving while asian).

drunk drivers often get much less of a sentence.

^^ you can say that all you want, but how is it not obvious that the car's computer sees no brake input and full throttle when the car has unintended acceleration.

correlation is not causation. i'm not pointing fingers here, i dont really care.

relying on the car's computer which is claimed to accelerate uncontrollably (ie full throttle and no brakes) is dumb. obviously if the computer saw braking there would be some sort of safety override.

all this shows is that they verified the input to the pcm (or how the pcm interpreted the input from the sensors), but may or may not have found the cause of the problem.

i figured the US dept of Transportation did a more thorough job and wouldn't just assume such. Then again maybe I'm placing too much faith in the gov't.

^^Sort of following those same thoughts; has anyone explicitly stated that the analog input or other simple pedal sensors that had no integrated circuitry was ruled out or nonexistent? I saw this on the news earlier and it's not really clear on whether this vindicates Toyota or not on the acceleration issues' root cause. I see what you're saying, that a PID loop flaw or overlapping signals on a circuit could cause the issue and yet show all systems as ok but it really depends on quite a few things. Precisely how they designed this particular circuitry (analog or digital) and where they placed those brake, throttle, and associated sensors makes a lot off difference. I can see this will slightly help toyota in the headlines but it needs more backup info to really figure it out objectively. Having some of the affected vehicles come in for "upgraded firmware" along with the new floormats and shims in the middle of the massive recall doesn't help their rep either on this.

The NHTSA released a statement a few days ago denying the news article saying the problem was driver error and even went so far as to suggest that Toyota made it up.

They have not reached any conclusions at this point.

Hah, 6 month delay on this but in response to ^ your question about this making it easier to buy a Toyota on the end of the first page, I was saying it's going and did lower the prices of the vehicles involved and as a whole in regards to the brand. They still seem to have some heavier incentives going on compared to before the fallout.
