I have Charter and I agree. Charter is worse all around. Prices, channels, customer service...it's sad.

I usually have the promo for a year, pay one month of full cost then sign up for the next promo.

I have charter and its not too awful. They made a habit of screwing up our internet for a while (it was nothing major) and had a ton of documentation of me calling/switching up modems for like 3 years before they finally fixed it. Now whenever we want a discount applied they give it to us

Just went off my 6 month promo at 29.95. Went up to 57.95 for 7mb. I also just happened to get a flyer from CenturyLink and I could get 10mb for 39.95. Called TWC first to see what they could do. Went through the first grunt that tried to upsell me on a bundle and the finally the next person took about 10 minutes of getting all my info and going through her assortment of deals and offered 34.95/12months/7mb.

It really kind of pisses me off to know they are at least making a profit at that price or they wouldn't offer it and yet they bitch and whine and moan about needing a tiered internet when its likely the majority of people are paying full fee for their overpriced shit.

Not necessarily. It is possible they are giving it to you at a loss in hopes you will forget in 12 months and then they make a killing.

That said, as with most network effect markets, think back to competing railroads or airlines, all their costs are pretty fixed, so the tendency is for prices to fall towards variable costs and bankruptcy. That they are not means something else is going on, probably the interplay between areas with competition and areas without competition and the fact that TWC cannot (legally?) have different prices between the two areas.

Pretty sure all the ISPs have prices in different areas. They may be getting around it through loopholes, but they certainly do.

I guess this question can go in here...

Has anyone been able to get a cableCARD with TWC Raleigh and NOT have to schedule a technician to visit? Seems incredibly stupid that I would have to pay for them to come out here when I can certainly install that myself.

lol, i just called to get this stupid $10 price increase removed and threatened to leave, and the dumb bitch acted like the only option was some promotion of free dvr for 3 months. i'll call once more before our contract ends, and if i get stonewalled again i'll have an excuse to go to directv

I had already switched my TV from TWC to directv. Well I just moved and tried to have road runner installed at the new house and TWC told me they couldn't do it. Funny because my neighbors on both sides of me have TWC. Apparently they can't do installations greater than 500ft off the road. Were they BSing me or is this actually true? Im about try AT&T, I think thats my next fastest internet option.

Where is this Charter you speak of?

I would kill for the mild headaches of Time Warner again if it meant competition with Charter on the Outer Banks.

Ok, now AT&T tells me that DSL is not offered in my area. WTF! Does anyone know what my options would be with TWC that would allow me to connect to their lines? I am 1400ft off the road where their lines run. I don't mind paying $$$$ to get this done, I just want to know if its possible.

jax, what problems do you have with charter out here?

besides the lack of HD channels I don't have much problem with their residential service. I get a steady 20/1 connection all the time.

Their phone service in NH at work pisses me off, though. But it's over 100$ cheaper a month for faster internet and enough minutes for the 2 phone lines compared to embarq/centurylink.

Were you on a 6-mo or 12-mo promotion? If so, that's not without warning. Otherwise, carry on and commence dealing with it.

6 month intro pricing ended this month for TWC Roadrunner service

Called up yesterday and simply stated I wanted to cancel the service. Guy (who was quite nice, actually) simply said return the box and your service will be cancelled.

I said thanks and appreciated his help, but before the call ended he asked why I wanted to cancel. I simply stated that at the non-intro pricing I didn't feel I was getting good value for my money given evening performance, etc.

Guy immediately offered me 10 Mbps service for $34.95 a month for a year no contract.

Works for me.

Since this is the active TWC thread -

My internet, "RR Turbo Plus 3000" or whatever the highend package is called, is being wonky as shit lately. When I first hooked it up, it was doing a NCAA Dynasty download in about 3 seconds, and this evening it took easily 5 minutes for it to count up to 100%. Netflix has been on the fritz too, with the signal quality changing every few minutes requiring a rebuffering of the show/movie.

I know its like it could be my router, but I'm not ruling out that TWC could have some influence on it. What are some tests I can run?

I'm having similar problems with netflix in the evenings. I don't think it is my router because my wife says it doesn't happen during the day and it is not always an issue.

I had that happen to my digital cable and after many phone calls they finally came out to test everything. They ended up replacing the cable from the wall to the cable box. I would have never thought the cable would be bad. I never touched it since it was installed and assumed it worked correctly.

i've been paying $134.xx for cable, rr, hddvr, and a regular hd receiver. threatened to leave and got the "double bundle" pack for $89.95, plus my extras for a total of $124.xx. doesn't seem like much, but they were going to tack on an extra $10 just for the hell of it once my price lock expired, so i really lowered it by $20/mo.

plus, the nice thing is the promotion is only a year with no contract, so if uverse or something else comes along that's better, i have more leverage to get a better deal.

Every night after 7 pm and until 11 pm like clockwork - this is why my road runner turbo gets me. I finally called to complain and see if I could get them to extend my bundle deal and they said no. Thy said since these issues I was experiencing were due to oversaturated notes region wide that they were told explicitly they could not offer compensation for it since it affects too many people. Looks like I'm going to uverse. I probably could have talked to a 4th or 5th person on the phone and gotten something, but I was getting too angry at that point. If I had tried any longer I would have just started cursing them out.

Luckily my cell phone battery died. Now you might think I could have called back on my landline but I use an IP phone... which their service rendered useless. That gave me time to cool down and decide to sign up for u-verse instead of dealing with them anymore. Unfortunately it was after 7 so the U-Verse signup page was as slow as molasses.

Here's a pathping to a server in Greensboro. It illustrates particularly well that the QoS is garbage across most of the TWC portion of the network:

Not sure where else to post this.

But the $14.95 a month charge for wireless from Time Warner is only them providing you with a router, correct? Should I just get normal internet and then buy my own router?

So im poking around on twc's website, their auto bundle for digital cable and standard net is 111, I do a custom package of just the same two, its 94.

GAH I love this site. So I have an account rep for the new apartment. She quotes me a 40 buck install fee. Website shows it and then waves it.

Anyone know if they make you rent your own modem? I have one I think will work quite nicely. That or Ill bum one from work.

"haggled" with TWC yesterday. I was paying $100.20 w/tax for the following:
-Digital Cable
-HD DVR
-Sports Pass
-RR Turbo

After my 1yr price lock, my bill went to $121, so I called, and asked the guy what he could do. After a few minute wait, he offered me $108/mo for another year. Since they've added a few channels in HD that I've wanted, I'm fine with an increase of $8/mo.

^wow, yeah that is crazy expensive (especially at the $125 for what you had ).

My wife and I finally just dropped our cable service (for TV) but kept the 8Mbps internet portion. Even talking them down on price a few times we weren't happy with what we were paying. We talked to both direct and dish and dish had the best prices for us. Charter basically flat out told us they wouldn't match the dish price and services, even with a contract. We did keep our internet service through them though.

So now for a combined price of $65 for the next 12 months(Charter for internet and Dish for TV) we are getting:

-120 HD Channel package (Don't need that many but it has all the channels we would watch)
-HD-DVR in one room and standard definition + DVR in another room
-3 free months of HBO+Showtime
-8 Mbps internet service

Cable company tried to counter that package with $95 for:

-200 HD Channel package
-HD-DVR in one room and standard service in any other rooms
-8 Mbps internet service

so let me see if I'm reading TWC's website correctly...

for 27612 zip code....

only 1 TV package available? 200 channels (other than HBO, showtime, etc packages)

TV + 10 Mbps + phone bundle = $99
TV + 7 Mbps bundle = $112
TV + 7 Mbps non-bundle = $95

where am I going wrong?

moron on the phone said $135 for TV + 7 Mbps. this is why I fucking hate TWC.

i still have no trouble with them

$65 for basic digital cable and 7mbps intarwebs

they took away history international (and a few others i didn't watch, i guess) because they had "accidentally" let me have it for 8 months, but that's my only complaint

Although I also, frequently, and more often then others get upset at TWC and complain (understandably like everyone else), they aren't all to blame. The channels constantly raise their service price to TWC, and threaten 'lock outs' and interuption of service if Time Warner doesn't pay more. And they always choose to end their contracts RIGHT at a significant event, like football playoffs, season finales, etc. TWC has to constantly keep up with competitors such as Comcast by offering more and more channels and more in HD. Stuff ain't free to them. UVerse and that mess is cheap because AT&T is losing serious money to attract customers that would otherwise have no reason to switch carriers, no doubt, that price will go up too. BUT, as someone suggested, the easiest way to stick it to the man is go with Netflix streaming.

With 1/3+ of programming commercials, why the hell isn't cable free?! At what point did that glitch happen.

TWC lied to me big time, over charged me for 10 months.... stupid dikes.

I had moved addresses, asked to carry over my "non expiring" $85/month plan for Turbo + 1room HD + DVR Cable package. They said ok, but since you are a new address we have to create a new account for you and offer the price to you with the 3 free premiums for 3 months ... I said only if I never get billed for the premiums and dont have to call in to cancel ... to which they said no problem.

Of course, 3 months later, I start getting billed. Called in, told them to cancel the premiums and credit me back the month they charged. They said ok. Noticed my total fee was now also 30/month higher than the agreed to price, told them they needed to reset back down and that the guy had said it wouldnt change for 24 months (couldnt promise forever)... They said ok, no problem.

10 months later, I look ... they have not canceled premium, and never changed the price ... in fact it was not charging me 150/month. Called in, got them to credit me back the premium fees, since they had record of me asking for them to cancel. They wouldnt give me credit for the RR/Cable overcharge though. Asked for escalation, still no callback for 2 days.

Filed a BBB complaint for dishonest sales practices. They seem to respond to some of those ...

Once the credits they give me run out, ill be switching to corporate discounted business class cable until google gets its crap together.
