I've bought second hand receivers before, and never cared what standing the original owners account was in, and I've never had a problem adding them to my service.

Maybe I was just lucky that none of the previous owners were in bad standing?

GF is establishing new service. uVerse TV isn't available (though oddly uVerse internet is)...should she go with TWC or Dish/Direct? Only thing I worry about with sat services is reliability? Does tv service still go in and out all the time?

i've had dish about 6 years now. haven't had a problem with service going out bc of weather (or any other reason). i can send you a referral thing that i think is a $50 discount when you sign up.

they've really upped their customer service lately. you can get a hold of them thru chat online, but also through twitter and facebook. they're very responsive.

^I was watching TV at a friends house and the picture quality was freaking incredible. I thought it was the TV (Samsung LCD), but after finding out she has Direct I'm thinking it was that. I've only had TWC and uVerse...and I was assuming Direct is less compressed, which led to the better picture quality. That in line with your thinking?

idk anything about whether the picture quality is better, so i'm not going to argue with you on that one...but i do disagree about the UI. i can't stand directv's. the UI on the older dish boxes is crap, yeah, but the 922 is slick. dish has some new one coming out, the logo is a kangaroo but i can't remember what they're calling it, but it's supposed to be awesome.

this is a hair off topic, but has anybody used/tried the new fiber (i think) provider? i can't remember what it's called but the logo or name has something to do with a rainbow... i'm googling but haven't found it yet... When I switched from TWC to direct, there was a very noticeable difference in picture quality, TV staying the same.

Actually, here's the better indicator: My WIFE noticed the difference in picture quality, and she's a typical non-techie luddite.

is that increase in picture quality just bc of whatever directv specfically is using (vs dish), or would it just be cable vs satellite? serious question, not trying to argue or anything.

I find satellite to be better than cable, regardless of who the provider is. It all comes from Sats... just a matter of how many channels it takes to get to your tv.

Increase in PQ is due to TWC and the like compressing the fuck out of their signals, and satellite companies having no need to do that.

well, dish has to compress because they have much less spectrum compared to directv. directv bought out so many companies and assumed their spectrum that they can blast everything near native
