I wonder how many of the latino students were pissed off that they had to go to school and it wasn't a city/state/national holiday

It's California what do you expect?

I'd like to know what this school would do about students wearing a flag that wasn't a US flag on the 4th of July. Perhaps we should ban wearing American flags on Bastille Day and Canada Day as well

^^If the school is willing to send students home for wearing tshirts with American Flags on Cinco De Mayo, why not just make it a national holiday so that the latino students who were supposedly so offended could celebrate the holiday? If we're going to put so much value on Cinco De Mayo, like we would with holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, then why are they in school on that day?

Funny though, your post about me losing my credibility is yet

According to the article, the school took away actual mexican flags from some of the mexicans. And there were other students wearing american flags that were left alone.

Why would we make this a national holiday now? What point are you trying to make?

It could maybe be a local holiday if enough of the local population there is of mexican descent, but calling for a national holiday is a pretty dumb idea.

you know what else is a dumb idea?

sending someone home from a school in the United States for wearing a shirt with a United States flag on it

we can talk about this as much as we want, but the first reply in the thread pretty much sums up the entire situation

That if its so disrespectful to Mexican students or students of latin descent that people would dare wear shirts with American flags on them on Cinco de Mayo, isn't it also disrespectful to make them go to school on a day thats obviously so important to them?

The school is basically saying, its inappropriate to disrespect this holiday by wearing an American flag...but we're going to force the students to come to school on this day instead of allowing them to celebrate with their families, etc

If you celebrate Christmas, and had to go to school on Christmas Day...which one would make you more upset:

- seeing some kids with Stars of David on their shirts
- the fact that you had to go to school on Christmas

^^ you’re putting words in the school’s mouth there.

I don’t think this was an issue of “respect” for the Mexican holiday.

You have to remember, these are high schools kids. It’s pretty likely that the guys wore the shirts for the amusement that would ensure from the ire they drew from the majority (?) mexican descent population of the school. The ass. principal probably thought they were going to try and pick fights with other people, or other people were going to try and pick fights with them, because that’s what people do in high school if someone bucks a common trend.

Its effectively a one day suspension, but an actual suspension would certainly bring even more backlash against the school since the school board already said they didn't agree with how the school handled it

I agree with the 2nd part, although like aaronburro said, kids used to take care of this themselves

On a lighter note, maybe instead of being sent home for the day, the kids with the flag shirts should've just been tasered

Look how fucking dense you are. This is a school, not a sports stadium. If one group of students is intentionally trying to make another group of students feel uncomfortable, how can you sit there and say that's acceptable? Why should they have to suck it up? They're at school to learn, not to deal with some Tapout-branded assholes.

Also, and I might be wrong, but the 2nd kid from the right looks like he has some hispanic genes and the kid on the left might possibly...god forbid a kid with latin ancestry be proud of the country he lives in

ok, keep siding with the cunty adults

at least the cunty kids are young dumb HS kids

the cunty adults are in charge of educating thousands of kids

btw looks like I was partially right...one of the kids names is Galli...probably Italian...another's name is Maciel...which is, SURPRISE, OF MEXICAN HERITAGE

but fuck him for embracing the country he lives in more than the country his ancestors were from

question:

is turning around a shirt with a flag on it / turning it inside out

in the same league as letting a flag touch the ground?

ie, you dont do it because its disrespectful to the flag?

having the flag on a shirt is disrespectful in the first place

Quote :
"Significantly, the Flag Code prohibits using the flag "for any advertising purpose" and also states that the flag "should not be embroidered, printed, or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use".[18] Both of these prohibitions are widely flouted, almost always without comment."

Quote :
"The flag should not be used as "wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery",[1] or for covering a speaker's desk, draping a platform, or for any decoration in general (exception for coffins)."

Quote :
"The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, firefighters, police officers, and members of patriotic organizations."

and just for good measure, letting the flag touch the ground isn't some huge faux pas.

Quote :
"The flag should never touch anything beneath it. Contrary to an urban legend, the flag code does not state that a flag that touches the ground should be burned. Instead, the flag should be moved so it is not touching the ground.[7]"

interesting since none of your quotes even support that notion

quote 1: advertising implies profit motive, they werent looking to make money...and i dont think a shirt is intended to be something you wear once and throw away

quote 2: wearing a shirt with the flag != wearing a flag...im really surprised someone as clever as you would even try to use this quote

quote 3: tshirts arent costumes or athletic uniforms

it seems like you're really reaching to say having the flag on a shirt is disrespectful

quote 4: i did not know that but thanks for the knowledge...although once again...your quote states the flag should be moved so that it doesn't touch the ground...which is what i said...i never said it should be burned...but that it shouldn't touch the ground

so basically you didn't really disprove or successfully argue against anything

i at least figured some of you people would change your tune when one of the kids was basically Mexican and still protesting it

how dare he show support for the country he lives in and have great opportunities, as opposed to the country his father was hell bent on getting out of in favor of immigrating to america!
