In the LOTR & Hobbit storyline wasn't Legolas the son of an Elven King that fought in the in the Big War? Thought I read that somewhere years ago. And I can see Frodo being alive, the Hobbits lived unnaturally long anyway.

To be technical, they don't really live unnaturally long. Bilbo did because of the ring (like Gollum). The average lifespan is ~90-100 years. I mean, it was a big deal that Bilbo was having his 111th birthday; so not entirely different than a human's lifespan.

In keeping with Tolkien's timeline, Frodo was born 27 years after Smaug's death.

Now, as long as they don't force Frodo into any role that is too large I won't really care as it is a detail that will not ruin the overall story even if it doesn't keep with Tolkien's hard-written time line. In mose cases, those dates aren't entirely essential to the story.

Also, yes, Legolas' dad was Thranduil who was the king of the wood-elves in The Hobbit who captured Bilbo and his company leading up to the Barrels out of Bond chapter (one of my favorites in the book).

Basically, for the most part, Legolas, Galadriel, and some others can definitely be worked in to the story with quick cameos because, although they were not named in The Hobbit, they would have been in locations of The Hobbit during the events of the story.

I thought hobbits were basically kids/teenagers until there were 30

Sort of correct on both regards. The two oldest living hobbits (not counting Gollum even though he started as a hobbit) was like 130 years old (had to look that one up). One of them was Bilbo because he had the help of the power of the ring and the other was Old Took.

So, yes I think it was a bit of both for Bilbo: with the average lifespan being 90-100, 111 is still good and also he looked really young for 111. Either way, 111 was still well above the average.

And the kids/teenagers thing until they are 30 is about right since their lifespan is a bit longer than ours.

I'm guessing they will include Frodo at the end of the 2nd movie because if they included him in the first movie before Bilbo's journey, that would kind of screw up his age in the LOTR movies. He was supposed to be 33 at Bilbo's birthday and close to 50 around the time that he set off to destroy the ring. Including him in The Hobbit would shift that stuff by 27 years + how ever old he actually is in The Hobbit movie. His character definitely isn't 77+ at the start of their journey in LOTR...

Once again, I don't think it will be a big deal at all in the movies, just kind of screws with the time line. Obviously, that happens all the time, but when you have someone like Tolkien with books upon books of hard-recorded information and time lines you have to wonder why they might be messing with it (besides the Hollywood tie-ins they can tout)

33 is the hobbit "come of age". Frodo achived this at Bilbo's 111'th birthday, as the joke was made about them together they were "one gross" (144).

If you guys saw my post on pg1, I said it would not be odd at all for Legolas to appear as the Wood Elf King's son. Or for Galadriel to appear since she was part of the White Council, which is said to be incorporated to the story. Depending on how the White Council is done, Saruman can appear as well, as well as a timeline jump, if they completely destroy Dol Guldor, as this plot was finished in LOTR. Otherwise to just clear it of Sauron, this was done at the same time as the Battle of Five Armies.

Perhaps in this movie, the eagles will talk, as they did in the books. Smaug will be an incredibly interesting character and hopefully he will be as treacherous and terrifying in the movies. The trolls will be great too, assuming they do it right. Realistically it's not going to live up to what I imagine, but I'll like it all the same.

It's been forever since I read the book, so maybe time has clouded my memory. Smaug incredibly interesting? I just remember it being a miserly dragon. I don't remember there being too much depth of character, and it seems like most of the time was spent building anticipation for the eventual meeting rather than time spent on the meeting itself.

I'll have to go back and read The Hobbit. It's been too long.

Besides the obvious dragon qualities of greed, murder, and cruelty... Smaug shows us more. Smaug has unusual traits to the quintessential dragon character. In the book, Smaug is incredibly persuasive to the point of mind control. Just by talking to Bilbo, Smaug almost manages to convince Bilbo that the dwarves are secretly planning some kind of double-cross of their trusty burglar. While the idea of dragons as silver-tongued creatures has a long history in ancient Norse folklore, it is not typical outside of that lore. The whole conversation between Bilbo and Smaug is an atypical duel of wits, and showed Smaug's piercing intellect, devilish coercion, and masterful cunning. I found the dragon an interesting character, an ancient evil, far surpassing any half-witted balrog.

Yeah it's a great little book. Much more elementary writing but still one of my favorites. My dad actually read it to me the first time when I was just about old enough to read it and enjoy it on my own but my sister was a little too young so he read it to both of us a chapter per night and I just remember loving everything about the book. I've read it several times since then.

I'm not worried at all, especially not over small press releases and such like this. All the other stuff I have seen from this so far (videos, set pictures, pictures of Bilbo, Gandalf etc.) have looked awesome and after LOTR I think he deserves to get the benefit of the doubt. Plus, they have the challenge of making all the dwarves in the party unique enough to be distinguishable and not just caricatures of what we saw from Gimli.

The other thing to remember is that early single items like this are easy to nitpick since they are out of the native live environment. A great example of this is people who were finding everything to nitpick about Game of Thrones production photos (hair-styles, armor, sets, etc.) over the past 2 years and then the final product was amazing.

You can certainly not like the picture in your own opinion, but I don't think that it really serves as an example of the overall production either way. I like the picture, save for Nori's hairstyle.

^^ I think quite a number of people feel the same as you. The picture does look goofy. The picture also shows how much detail and finesse are going into this movie. More so than LOTR imo.

The majority of negative feedback coming from this picture over the net are from people who are fans of the aforementioned movies, and haven't read the Hobbit. I'm not saying that you're not a fan of the Hobbit, or haven't read the books. It's just that people seem to forget how individualized and yeah sometimes quirky the dwarves are supposed to be.

Nah, I realize the Hobbit has more... "whimsy" I suppose... and that, especially these three characters, have personality traits that should come across in them looking rather peculiar... but to me, other than the one on the far right, the other two just lack a little bit of realism. Perhaps they're a little too over the top for my tastes.
