Correct, they were brought in from Outworld but their physical features set them apart from the other fighters. I was saying that a movie trying to keep things in today's reality might have an easier time of saying 'there is magic/voodoo/spooky/whatever' than 'there are races of mutants like Baraka and Reptile everywhere you just dont see them'.

You could try the "these serial killers are from another dimension *wavy hands*" but I don't see that one going too well.

i know the backstory too, and it's entirely possible they add the magical element. i'm just saying based on strictly what i saw in the trailer, it seems like they're going in a different direction.

This will not be a good movie...

^Take that with a grain of salt. It's the new metal album syndrome. A metal band puts out a few albums that the hard core fans don't like as much as the older albums, they've gone soft/sold out. The metal band comes out with a press release where they say that their new album is going to be "the heaviest album since [our most popular album]". Then the new album comes out and it's the worst one yet.

Same thing. Series has fallen off over the years. No better way to advertise than to make claims that the new one is going back to the roots of the one that was universally liked... regardless of whether it's true.

I liked it, and would support this movie. Of course there would be some changes and re-writes but I am feeling this idea. I like the story angle and feel they can run with this.

Hopefully they would keep the mystic and magic of the original storyline. Done as a rated R movie this will be a solid movie.
