Bond Lake in cary ... we've been a couple times but haven't had any luck ... they don't open up very early so it's hard to catch the morning bite

$10/hour for trolling motor + jon boat

I've always done pretty well fishing there. I know boat rentals are available, but I have no idea how much they cost or anything.

Everyone post your best Bowfin spots that are shore/wade accessible (even though im sure the best bowfin spots will most likely not be wadeable lol)

^ive never caught one, but all reports about them devouring lures and raising hell when you catch them and trying to bite anyone and everything sounds pretty exciting lol

shit is true

if you fish too light your pretty much replacing tackle with every bite, whether you land it or not

best fishing you can do freshwater from the fight to the locales where you fish em.

Went wade fishing at West Point at the Eno last night

at around 7:45 somethin (most likely a bass) shook my lure (a crawdad shallow diver)

caught a 1lbr bass at around 8 on the same lure struck at the bottom as i was reeling, natural color

then at about 8:45 caught another 1lbr bass off a carolina rigged purple and black jerkbait

both were released i left out of respect of park rules, it started getting dark

another funy story, when i got there three lil black girls were lookin for turtles, couldnt find anything, toward the end of my trip i noticed turtles swiming towards a log, two big ones and a smallish one so i figured itd be cool to catch a turtle for them since its nice to see black youth out enjoying nature, caught the baby turtle for them and i didnt even lecture them on removing wildlife from the park

..maybe i should have. they were very happy though, kinda made my night in and of itself

when i was younger, I used to catch these bastards all the time...I didn't know people actually targeted them....We promptly killed any that were caught.

heading to charleston this weekend and i'm going to try and make it out to my favorite fishing spot- Morris Island lighthouse. its relatively close to the jetties out from the harbor. ive caught sea bass, whiting, and flounder around there pretty consistently, and also a pretty large hammerhead that i wasnt equipped for and got away.

happy holiday fishing err'body!

Don't think western nc was part of their native habitat...Everything I've seen said they're native to the deep south around the gulf and atlantic. Those things will eat anything they come across and make it hard for other species to compete.

if it makes you feel any better, we sometimes gave them to the asians who asked if they could have them.

people do the same shit with Gar

and they dont make it hard for other species to compete, they make it hard for sport fisherman to catch bass easily, big difference. theres no unbalance to the environment caused by bowfin, gar, carp, porgies, or any other fish people decide are unfit to share the waters with bass

its snakehead that are nonindigenous

it seriously breaks my heart to see people doin that, im not trying to knock on you but just this practice in general.

the way I see it, we all pay the same damn amount for our permits, and that money goes to management of our waters and forests...if i am a fisherman targeting bowfin why would I be happy paying money to the government just to see people throwin my fish onto the bank?

meh, no different than people keeping fish to eat...and the simple fact that the nc wildlife dept doesn't set limits on these 'nuisance' fish shows where they stand on the issue.

There are bodies of water known for their gar/bowfin etc...but they don't belong everywhere.

dunno man, the asian carp are raping parts of the mississippi as we speak.

youre bringing up non native species

and you are trying to argue that leaving fish to die is OK and comparable to harvesting fish for consumption

i had given you more respect that that but now i see that thats what you try to argue

it doesnt matter what a body of water is known for, if there are species in it there are species in it

one fisherman may say that Falls lake is known for greta bass fishing, another may say it is the best place in the state to go bowfishing for gar who is right? they both pay for their licenses, who is right and who is wrong?

creel limits are not set because there isnt as much of a demand to target these species because they are not a gamefish, btu they dont designate native wildlife as a nuisance fish. plus it just shows poor ethics, stewardship, and respect for the land you harvest from.

so are you...that's my point

so once a species is introduced into a particular area where it wasn't previously we should just say fuck it, its here now, might as well just leave it? Just about any recreational lake you go to will have warnings about inadvertenly transporting wildlife from one area to another...Hell, I was in Yellowstone a few years ago and they instructed people to kill a certain type of trout in lake yellowstone...all the way down to how to properly pierce the air bladder.

you are going on the assumption that somehow bowfin are not native, which is false

go to the natural history museum and check it out or something

if there species that dont belong in a particular body of water or if there is an excessive population the wildlife commission will post an advisory

im really not goin to keep arguing this

and law states that you can not catch ANY fish or crustacean in one body of water and release it in another. its not a law specific to non gamefish. there are also law against wasting edible portions of fish either by returning it to water dead or leaving it on a bank were there is a public safety concern.

you bringing up asian carp effecting mississippi has nothing to do with native grass carp here in NC, some trout in yellowstone has nothing to do with the environment here

anyone ever purchased or used an inflatable tube/raft/pontoon/kayak/etc?

im lookin into one because I live in an apartment and alot of the places I fish are easily accessible with a hike carrying an inflatable vessel

hopefully one that weighs no more than 30-50 lbs. Any recommendations? stability and storage are my priorities, with the ability to affix a trolling motor
