Obstructionist - Even with the military. In addition to participating in filibuster threats, he held up Duckworth's nomination to a key position in the office of veteran affairs despite her strong qualifications. He specifically also let generals travel from Korea and Hawaii to Washington DC for a meeting of the Senate Armed Services Committee and then canceled the meeting as a part of a larger party wide effort of obstructionism to not even let meetings happen. And his recent efforts have attempted to block unemployment relief and small business support efforts. War - Burr says we still need several more years of war. Whereas Elaine has challenged President Obama on amount of conflict we're involved with. Washington Incumbent - This one might not be a big deal to everyone, but I know for some people they don't like politicians who have been in Washington forever, and Burr has been in Washington for nearly 2 decades. But after nearly 2 decades it’s hard to name any big Burr accomplishments unless you want to count his attempt to make flag burning illegal? Women's issues - He voted against Franken's anti-rape amendment which passed with many Dem & GOP votes. He also voted for domestic violence to continue as a pre-existing condition. He’s anti-choice and he voted against the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act."

Without having watched the debate tomorrow, I am confident that I will not be voting for Richard Burr in November; however, I will watch it anyway.

Next debate is tomorrow. Glad to see they are including everyone. Well more people anyways. The Green Party candidate Richard Weir still isn't there. I haven't heard much about his campaign, he seems to stand by the standard green party platform, but focus on education and ballot access issues. (although, honestly, this campaign seems to have a level of input somewhere between student body president, and county commissioner, rather than a strong statewide effort, so I kind of get why... on the other hand, how are parties supposed to grow strong enough if you don't give them a chance).

^Forgot to mention, it starts at 8 pm. I'll be finishing up a midterm at the time, so someone should post about how its going so I can catch up quick when I get back. Hopefully NPR will be broadcasting it too so I can catch part of it on the way home. I heard they did with the last debate, so maybe they will here too.

I'm glad NBC is letting the Libertarian guy play, even if the 2 WRAL debates aren't.

Double post and all, but the ineptitude of politicians never ceases to amaze me. How can someone be work in government for 15+ years (or however long Marshall and Burr have been doing it) and have such a shaky grasp on the issues? Burr had this shit eating grin on his face the entire time - he seems like an all around dumbass, and he strikes me as insincere. Marshall said some things I liked, but on most of the questions, she was extremely vague. I want to hear some specifics. Of course, I liked Beitler, but he didn't adequately answer the question on rising insurance premiums or jobs, and he wrongly criticized Marshall for being pro-war, in a "guilty by association" kind of way.

I think the award for dumbest thing uttered goes to, "America was built great..."

My midterm took the whole period, so I didn't watch debate until just now. I was watching out for the quote the whole time wondering who said it, and when it would come up. Poor Burr, and in his closing speech too.

I was impressed by Beitler more than I expected. He was more open to things in the realm of campaign finance reform, voter owned elections, fair elections now act, transparency/sunshine efforts, and the like as was Marshall. I don't know how much of that was from his libertarian ideals, and how much was from his being a 3rd party wanting to expose the special interest support of those in Washington, and of course voter owned elections can help open doors to 3rd party candidates who couldn't otherwise afford to compete against massive spending. I already knew Marshall was against DADT & DOMA (from reading her website), but I was happy to hear Beitler was against both of those as well, which I guess makes sense from a libertarian point of view. And I was happy with Beitler calling out Burr for only pretending to be a fiscal conservative. I was pleased that Marshall pointed out that she wasn't the Washington establishment choice in the the primary.

Overall I think more open debates and elections are definitely the right way to go.

It also pointed out that Burr's job approval is negative and worsening, and Marshall's favorability is positive and growing, as is her name recognition. But the biggest news is obviously that the gap is tightening. And there are enough undecideds to make up that gap.

The Marshall camp still has more ads to air, there is a final televised debate in a few days, and I believe I heard that she picked up the News & Observer endorsement to which has to help.

Their last poll will be released somewhere in the Th 28th to Mon 1st range.

I'm not sure if that bold part is meant to suggest a tie? Seems odd that they ask Senate party instead of candidate by name (although, I do expect a large number of people vote by party). Not restricting it to likely voters maybe weakens it too (although there has been disagreement over what counts as a likely voter & how doing it wrong could introduce its own kind of bias).

I think PPP will be releasing a poll tomorrow or the 1st by the latest. They do restrict to likely voters. It should be more telling.

The elections results party for Elaine Marshall will be at the Brownstone Hotel, 1707 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh. Its not too far from the Bell Tower, just down the street towards down a short distance. A cash bar will be available.

Of course its free to get in, and open to the public. It starts at 7:30pm. Brad Miller should be making an appearance there too.

He opposed it every step along the way, and voted against it in the only vote that mattered. He voted against repeal as a part of the Defense Bill (the same kind of bill it was born many years ago) back in September, and he voted against it on the cloture vote now as a stand alone bill. He was an enemy of DADT repeal and did nothing to help it pass. And even with his vote he still spoke about DADT repeal as if it was a bad thing.

Its like, after Obama won, McCain gave a call congratulating Obama on winning. You might say it was a respectable thing to do, but its a far cry from calling him an Obama supporter for doing something supportive after it had already been decided.

He will be remembered as a DADT repeal opponent to most of the people who wanted DADT repeal.

Can we take a minute to recognize Senator Burr? I don't agree with a lot of his stances on issues, but at a minimum he has atleast conducted himself, as Chairman of the Sen. Intel. Cmte., like an adult that is interested in conducting oversight rather than partisan hysterics and obfuscation.

I know that's a low bar, but when you compare him to some of the other folks that are in a similar position, He has been a way better representative for his constituents.
