I'm excited about this movie, I've already watched/read the original material. However, I'm a little worried about how it will translate to american cinema. There's a lot of REALLY explicit material that I'm not sure Hollywood would want to sully their hands with... 6/14/2011 7:37:41 AM |

i saw the first commercial for this yesterday
i read the books and wasn't impressed...don't get me wrong, if a book is BAD, i'll just quit reading it...these weren't really bad, but i had no trouble putting them down
all that said, i like david fincher and i think the books are entertaining, though i'm with others in wondering what they'll do with the, uh, more questionable/graphic parts...probably "artfully" focus on something else while what's going on is hinted at
also, i had no idea that the girl playing salander (rooney mara) is IRL sister to hayden (kate mara) in american horror story 12/1/2011 12:53:17 PM |

I can't decide if I should watch the Swedish version first or wait for this one to come out. 12/5/2011 8:08:09 AM |

Not for spoiler reasons.
I'm not sure how interested I'd be in the third telling of the story in less than a month so I might be bored with the second movie I watch. And I'd prefer to watch the better of the two first.
But it would be nice to see it in a movie theater and my wife is also one of those who "hates reading" during movies so we could watch the American one together. 12/5/2011 9:02:38 AM |

I guess my use of "also" could make you think that, my bad. I didn't realize the other posts in here were over a year ago. I have no problems with the subtitles, just to clarify.

I'd wait for the new one to come out just to see what people who have seen both say about it vs the Swedish version. If it's as good, see this one. If not, watch the Swedish version.
I get the whole "there's already a Swedish version out and it's pretty good" thing... I think I even said as much earlier in the thread. But it's not like this American version is simply some shoddy, non-subtitled version.
David Fincher is a director who's name alone has a little attraction. And the cast is pretty solid on top of that (Daniel Craig, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgard, etc.). I would have seen it just to see "David Fincher's new movie with Daniel Craig" without knowing what it was really all about. This could be just as good, or even better than the Swedish version --- which is pretty good, but not some perfect piece of film-making that shouldn't be touched. 12/5/2011 10:25:24 PM |

^^ can you expand on that? In what ways is it not TSN? Were you familiar with the story already (read the book or saw the swedish films)?
I ask because I honestly didn't think the social network was all it was made out to be. It was a well told story, well executed on all fronts, just not that entertaining to me. Same with Zodiac. Again, both are well made films.. but I'd watch Se7en, Fight Club, and Curious Case of Benjamin Button twice each, and Panic Room at least once more (probably The Game too) before I'd watch Zodiac or The Social Network again.

I thought Social Network was phenomenal, as was Zodiac. Zodiac's one of the most overlooked movies of the past decade IMO. But to me, a well-executed/well-made film IS an entertaining film, so admittedly that's probably why I enjoyed them so much. I thought both Zodiac and TSN told interesting stories and that the filmmaking techniques Fincher uses in both films are in keeping with the stories being told, and that both films are well-acted.
With TGWTDT, I just think it's simply too much to fit into a movie. I haven't read the books nor have I seen the Swedish version yet, but to me there were just too many different directions it was trying to go in. That kind of thing can work in a novel, but typically not in a film, even a 2-and-a-half-hour film, unless the film is done REALLY fucking well. Fincher just didn't do a good enough job of tightening it up. Not to mention that the film glosses over things that you wouldn't expect, it makes unexpected leaps in the narrative (for instance, it doesn't build up to the moment Mikael and Lisbeth have sex, and it doesn't show how Lisbeth gets into Martin's super-secretive murder lair). Not that you can't figure out what came in between, but it's just a strange choice for the narrative of the film. I don't know if it's that way in the book or not, but to me it was just a strange movie from a narrative standpoint. It's quite possible that it might be cultural differences at work that left me confused or disoriented, but those are just my thoughts.
I will say that visually, it looks pretty incredible, as Fincher's films very often do. And the first 30 minutes are insane because there are about a billion cuts and it seems like no scene lasts more than 10 seconds. Very cool pacing idea. 12/21/2011 5:35:10 PM |

we watched the swedish version a few nights ago, and while it is a pretty good movie, i was prettyu disappointed. it glosses over, changes, or completely leaves out some details of the novel that i found to be pretty fucking important to the entire story. 12/21/2011 6:13:34 PM |

^^^ yeah, I mean I enjoy a well made film as well. I'm amused by well crafted shots, and narratives. It seems where our opinions different is that I didn't find the stories of the social network or zodiac all that interesting. The story-telling was great, the stories were.. meh. I was already familiar with the story of FB and it's creators to a certain extent. And I, personally, just didn't find the Zodiac story all that interesting. It was good, just nothing I'd write home about. I'd put Social Network well above Zodiac in that regard to which story I prefer though.
Now I'm thinking I'll wait for redbox for this, or the 1.50... or 2.00 theater, whatever it is now. 12/21/2011 10:39:01 PM |

^^agree, i kept hearing rave reviews of the swedish film and was completely underwelmed when i saw it. im excited to see fincher's version.
^^^^^the examples you provide is pretty much how it happens in the book from what i can remember, no real build up to them having sex, it just happens. same with her lisbeth showing up in murder chamber. the book is a lot to cram into a movie though and have prepared myself im going to be somewhat disappointed. 12/21/2011 10:48:25 PM |

saw it tonight. pretty straightforward retelling with a couple of small plot changes. i'll admit, i was pretty hyped from the original teaser (the dialog-free one with the cover of "immigrant song"), but i was a little bit disappointed that fincher didn't elevate the material (like kubrick did with "the shining"). i think there are some problems inherent to the novel, like the overly-long denouement.
overall, it's a good movie. rooney mara did a fantastic job as lisbeth, even assuming a pretty convincing swedish accent. 12/21/2011 11:00:02 PM |

The beginning definitely felt cramped so the movie could spend more time with the Vangers. Rooney Mara was closer to how I pictured Lisbeth when reading the books and Craig turned in a better performance than I was expecting. When the opening credit sequence started playing I was a little and it felt unnecessary. All in all it was good, but was missing about another half hour of story, specifically at the beginning, to make it great. 12/22/2011 7:15:42 AM |

I agree about the beginning being boring, IMO because it was so rushed, there was no reason we should care why Millennium or Blomkvist's relationship with Wennerström. Either spend some time to flesh that part out and make us care about that part of the story or skip right to the 'who done it' investigation. I'll watch it again when it comes to Redbox. Also, the cat grabbing at the covers got a big lol from the audience. Poor kitty 12/22/2011 10:20:37 AM |

from a cinematography perspective it was beautiful. Fun fact for those who care about such things: this movie was shot with 4K and 5K RED cameras.

rooney ... her face i could take or leave, the rest of her... absurdly fucking hot. I've got a weak spot for socially akward punk chicks however.
the ending angered me although it's her fault... shouldnt have played so aloof with the "see you soon " motif. Craig's got options mang gotta remember that.

i finally saw this last night. i preferred it over the swedish film for a couple reasons. there was better character development in this film so you could get a better sense of the dynamics going on. also, it didn't leave out some important aspects of the story that were left out in the swedish film -- blomkvist's daughter, his relationship with berger, etc. it still left out/changed some things that left me wondering why they did that, like the harriet/anita thing. the opening scene was pretty fucking weird though and i'm not sure how it related, other than being weird and intense. overall, i'd say i liked this version better, though both were pretty good. if i hadn't read the book i think i might have been confused by both movies.
