O'Brien: No decision on N.C. State's starting tailback
Quote :
"N.C. State coach Tom O'Brien said today that no decision had been made on a starting tailback for the season-opener against Western Carolina.

"It's still a tight battle," O'Brien said of the logjam at the position. "We need to make that decision come Sunday. It's similar to the offensive line. It may not be really resolved until we get into game action."

The Pack has not released a two-deep depth chart. O'Brien said a "handful" of freshmen likely would be in the two-deep but did not give any names.

One change in coaching duties on game day will have defensive coordinator Mike Archer on the sidelines. Archer had been in the press box the last two years.
O'Brien said linebackers coach Jon Tenuta, who joined the staff this year, is more comfortable in the press box.

"Jon's never been on the sideline," O'Brien said. "Mike has been on the sideline before. This should be best for both.""

I'm a little surprised he hasn't gone ahead and named Underwood the starter, as Washington has always seemed like more of a situational back. Maybe the freshmen are even better than previously thought.

Personally, I'd love it if either Greene or Creecy claimed the starting spot.

Nothing against Underwood or Washington, but Greene and Creecy seem to have much more potential (and they'll be around longer)

They scored 17 points in less than half of their games last year...I guess we're fucked if some of these people are right in their predictions.

Just FYI, the guy who own thewolfpacker.com was really high on Greene. I met him at the Y

Yeah, you've got to remember that WCU's offense will be trying to work out the kinks too -- they're definitely not going to come in sharp. While our defense might not have it all together, their speed and talent alone should overwhelm Western Carolina. Should being the operative word

That's some fine circular logic right there. I'd rather have experienced guys carrying the rock personally, Underwood has been productive in the carries he's gotten and Washington has as much potential as anyone in that backfield...I think you're getting too caught up in the fact that they were 4 star recruits.

The really interesting part of the quoted article is:

Quote :
"One change in coaching duties on game day will have defensive coordinator Mike Archer on the sidelines. Archer had been in the press box the last two years.
O'Brien said linebackers coach Jon Tenuta, who joined the staff this year, is more comfortable in the press box.

Looks like Tenuta has the real authority now.

On the one hand that seems like reading too much into it, on the other hand that could actually be the case but TOB is too opaque to ever publicly admit that that is what's going on.

I gotta agree here. Underwood and Washington are gonna be cool under the pressure. Greene and Creecy are gonna be so amped for their first college game. I don't mind playing them in the 2nd half for some game experience.

One of them needs to be redshirted anyways to give us some depth in the future.

Let's not treat Underwood like he's this uber-experienced player. He has 50 carries and a TD in 3 years (redshirted one).

Washington has talent, but I still see him as a 3rd down guy.

Agreed that one of the Freshmen should be redshirted though. My guess is Creecy.

I hope this means Tenuta will be calling the plays.

Trying out my ESPN3 login to make sure its still working (parents have Suddenlink, so I made an account one time when I was home). The site appears to not be working for me at all...not sure if this is on my end or not, but Ive tried it in Firefox, IE, and Chrome. First, clicking on "Sign in" at the top does nothing...I have to click "Register Now" and then use "Sign In" under "Already have an account?". Once I do that and get back to the ESPN3.com page, clicking "Remote Access" and selecting "Suddenlink"...nothing. Does the account get "desynced" when one uses it on a non-affiliated provider too much? There is no reason for this to not work. This might be slightly off-topic for this thread, but if anyone has any information to share, please post it...pretty sure Im not the only one having this problem.

Unless we have a clear star-RB talent back there, what wrong with a Patriots-style RB committee? Do to em all what Belickick does to Maroney every year... keep em working hard for touches and well balanced for when injuries happen.

I would love it if TOB went ahead and gave Tenuta the reins now and didnt wait until halfway through the season to demote Archer. Archer had the worst ranked defense in the country the season before he got fired from Kentucky, then he comes here and runs our defense into the ground, fuck him

If there's no clear standout then figure out which one will drop the ball the least and make him the starter.

Seriously, I don't care if he doesn't have explosive running ability or has 20/400 vision. As long as he's not dropping the ball the rest can be worked out.

anyone else having trouble claiming your tickets if you got a guest ticket also? I hit claim, fill out the credit card info, and submit, but I keep getting an error message: "Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal."

i'm glad the big block S is back along with red lettering in the end zones. the two block s / white lettering fields never looked finished.

was that an issue with the temporary u2 grass or what?

Hear, hear to the 2009 ACC TD receptions leader, Jarvis Williams. I still remember his TD catch against ECU being one of the most awesome I've ever seen.

^^though it wasnt for a TD, Calvin Johnson's catch against us over the middle was the greatest I've ever seen. absolutely unbelievable. 1 handed, going the opposite direction across his body.
