leaving tomorrow morning for West Virginia. got a friend from up there. we're gonna stay with his grandfather and bow hunt through saturday. cold front is coming through, low 30s at night, some pre-rut action already going on.
can't wait to put a rage hole in something. 10/20/2010 1:35:53 AM |

Urban archery can be pretty fun (just dont get caught, but you're already wearing camo) and you can definitely see some huge deer. One of my friends had permission to hunt some land off of Trailwood (it's technically not in city limits) and caught a 16 pointer on his trailcam.10/20/2010 7:06:33 AM |

^yea, i've heard similar stories. i've just never been brave enough to go out and do it myself. do you have a pic of the 16 pointer around trailwood? i had no idea that deer got that big around raleigh.
good luck in WVA NeuseRvrRat. i've always wanted to go out of state to deer hunt, but always found a way to just hang around the new bern area. i have managed to line up a few hunts in the past up around ahoskie in hertford county. there are some big deer up in those regions, compared to ours. nice shot with the bow too. why are you shooting the bow in WVA, and not the rifle? do they not have a rifle season, or at least a shotgun? 10/20/2010 9:15:42 AM |

Nope, that was about four years ago. It was one of my neighbors and I was hanging out at his place when he got home and put in the SD card to look through the pics. The rack was insane, it had brow tines and drop tines going every which way. There's quite a few really good 8-10 pointers back there, they just dont have any pressure on them whatsoever.
If you can find those pockets, you have a really good chance at landing a nice size buck. I used to live near the new Edwards Mill extension by the RBC Center. I looked up the plot on the Wake County GIS and it was about 300 acres of state owned land and was not within city limits. Before they cleared that land, I would take my bow and walk right out my back door into the woods and hunt. There was a nice 12 pointer back there but he ended up getting hit by a car before I was able to get an arrow through him. I did manage to get a coyote though. 10/20/2010 9:35:09 AM |

Hahaha, i'm going out today to put up a cheap lock-on stand on some land next to my subdivision....there's deer tracks out there EVERYWHERE and I always see a few while turning in to my neighborhood. Planning on going ninja out there this saturday morning with the bow. 10/20/2010 9:37:02 AM |

I just joined the Rod & Gun club up here in northeast TN for the rifle range and shooting skeet. My 1st day on the rifle range, I'm set up with my M24/47 Mauser milsurp rifle, banging away at 100 yards, when 5 deer walk out into the middle of the range. I've never hunted, so I just thought it was funny, but the guy at the table next to me had just returned from a week of hunting in NC without seeing any deer. He was practicing with his deer rifle too, I can't imagine the temptation
Dumb deer took about 10 minutes to get off the range, they grew up around it so they're totally unphased by gunfire! 10/22/2010 7:57:22 PM |

I'm bow hunting up here bc their gun season isn't until around Thanksgiving. Hell, gun season doesn't start in NC's central deer region for a few more weeks.

bow hunting on private land in the city limits is perfectly legal as long as you own the land or have written permission from the land owner.
btw, i didn't kill anything in WV. missed a coyote on the last day.

^Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the municipality had to have an urban archery season. Permission to hunt private land in the city does not mean you can legally hunt. 10/24/2010 7:09:34 PM |

^^^i have yet to find a regulation that outlaws hunting inside the borders of a municipality. It's unlawful to discharge a firearm in city/town limits, but I can't find a regulation or law that restricts one from firing a bow on private property they own or have permission to be on.
Let me know if you do find such a regulation. 10/26/2010 2:01:19 PM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
for clarity: i can't find anywhere in the NCWRC Regulations Digest that says no hunting in city limits
from the NC general statutes:
Quote : | "§ 160A-189. Firearms.
A city may by ordinance regulate, restrict, or prohibit the discharge of firearms at any time or place within the city except when used in defense of person or property or pursuant to lawful directions of law-enforcement officers, and may regulate the display of firearms on the streets, sidewalks, alleys, or other public property. Nothing in this section shall be construed to limit a city's authority to take action under Article 36A of Chapter 14 of the General Statutes. (1971, c. 698, s. 1.)
§ 160A-190. Pellet guns.
A city may by ordinance regulate, restrict, or prohibit the sale, possession or use within the city of pellet guns or any other mechanism or device designed or used to project a missile by compressed air or mechanical action with less than deadly force. (1971, c. 698, s. 1.)
" |
the statement about pellet guns reads as if it applies to hunting archery equipment to me. so it would seem that it's up to the city.
all legal bullshit aside, if it's private land you own or have permission to hunt on, you use a bow or crossbow, and you're not an idiot about it (i.e. don't walk down the side of the road with your weapon, keep your mouth shut about where you're hunting), it's not likely that you'll have any problems

^I would have to assume that since firearms cannot be discharged within city limits, you're limited to archery equipment. And since not all places allow archery equipment except for the listed municipalities that participate in the urban archery season, I would assume hunting private property off of, say Trailwood, would be illegal...even with owners permission. Now if Raleigh added a UAS, hunting private property within city limits with archery equipment would certainly be legal
Although now that I think about it, I don't know the rule on discharging a bow within city limits. I would assume it's illegal as well

It might not be illegal to hunt within city limits, but just about all municipalities have regulations barring the use of guns/bows within their borders. Pull up the GIS for whatever area you are looking at. You would be surprised how many holes there are, especially with large tracts of undeveloped land.
What I'm still looking for is if you are allowed to hunt on state owned land. I've found several statutes that say that public land is for the general public to use as they see fit with very few restrictions. Could I just write myself permission to bow hunt on it? 10/26/2010 2:26:27 PM |

^^^^Unless it's changed in the past 2 years, Trailwood is not within city limits.
^^^For Raleigh
Sec. 13-2029. - BOWS AND ARROWS.
(a)
The discharge of any bow, slingshot, crossbow or other such device shall be prohibited within the City limits unless carried out under the following restrictions and conditions:
(1)
No arrow or other missile discharged in the City shall be tipped with a broadhead or hunting point. Only target or field points may be used.
(2)
No arrow or other missile shall be discharged on a lot located in a zoning classification allowing residences unless the lot is at least twenty-two thousand (22,000) square feet in size.
(3)
Any arrow or other missile discharged shall only be aimed at a target backed by a backstop measuring at least six (6) feet high and six (6) feet wide and of sufficient thickness to stop the passage of the arrow or other missile. In no event shall the thickness of the backstop be less than one (1) inch. If the lot upon which the shooting takes place contains a structure, any backstop must either be a part of the structure or else located between the user and the structure.
(4)
Anyone under the age of sixteen (16) years may use the implements regulated by this section only when supervised by someone at least eighteen (18) years of age.
(b)
The provisions of this section shall not be construed to prohibit the discharge of such devices at archery ranges approved by a written permit issued by the Raleigh Police Department. The Raleigh Police Department shall establish and promulgate regulations for approving such ranges within ninety (90) days from the adoption of this section. A copy of the regulations relating to archery ranges shall be placed on file in the office of the City Clerk. No archery range shall be approved in an area where such use is prohibited by the City's zoning regulations.

as stated in the NC general statutes i posted, it's up to each city to decide for itself (in the case of both bows and firearms). it's just that pretty much all cities have laws against discharging a firearm. bows aren't such a big deal, so we'd really need to sift through the particular city in question's local statutes.10/26/2010 2:30:53 PM |

Hunted a ground blind this afternoon that my buddy had left up. I literally zipped up the back flap, loaded my gun, turned to my right and shot a doe at 40 yards. I made a poor shot (little far back) and since I was hunting with a friend on another part of the property, I sat until dark to give him a chance to hunt. Tracked her at dark, had a massive bloodtrail that just kept going. Followed it into the thickest brush ever and got her. After dragging her all the way out, I'm flat exhausted. 11/6/2010 11:21:29 PM |
