NC State has 14 votes in the AP poll and 7 in the USA Today poll that came out today. A big win over GT might get us into the Top 25

The option never sleeps

Mr Johnson, my name is Josh Nesbitt, I'm gonna carry your football

I'm gonna melt his ass

yellow jackets win championships, midshipmen have honor, but a wolf....well a wolf....only slaughters sheep

he's not who you think he is. He'll hurt us

I once said holding was good, now it seems its legal

That name doesn't mean anything to me anymore

Its easy to get open, its hard to make the catch

Is that a threat?

Just call me TUFFY

One thing I did notice in the UNC-GT game was that Nesbitt loves to attack linebackers when out of the pocket (always). He took a few hits from Carter and you could tell he started to take the ball straight at him for good yards. He loves to get physical and won't back down. Carter make some BIG hits but he allowed Nesbitt to control the momentum and seemed to gash him for more and more yards. Carter and Nate are similar in spirit but completely different tacklers. I think this bodes well for us if Nate can get his big arms around Nesbitt and use both of their momentum to take him to the turf. These are the hits that quarterbacks don't get up from.

Kill em with Physics.

I do not have a great feeling about this game. While the triple option plays to State's defensive strengths, I think that GT will start to wear us down similar to what they did with UNC. Our DL has to play better than UNC's though and not let Nesbitt get to the LBs untouched. Audie Cole is going to be key in this game, does he have the speed to control his side of the field?

I think the offense should be able to move the ball and hopefully we'll get enough offense to take this game.

GT = 31
State = 28

I won't be surprised if we win and I won't be surprised if we lose, but after them losing to Kansas, and seeing their defense is not that great (UNC), I like our chances better than I did a week ago.

If Vegas has this at an 8-9 point line for GT, then I am not holding out much hope that we win. They obviously see something in our team that makes them think we cannot hang with GT.

I believe the line will move a good bit...but yeah, it seems like vegas has an idea. Then again I have an idea too:

Pack: 38
Sting: 28

(we kick a FG with 4-5 mins left to make it a 10 point game, GT gets desperate and Pack D stays calm, stops them, ends with Russell kneeling.)

I had guessed GT by 7 would be the opening line. Considering that the home team has a 3 point handicap, this line isn't much to overcome.

Also, we were a 2-3 point favorite over Cincy. Vegas was wrong about that one...

I wonder if it's fun for the coaches to draw up a defensive plan for a game like this. Or maybe it's a nightmare.

If you were the coach, how would you plan against the triple option? Are we going to see as much blitzing this game? I think blitzing is effective against dangerously accurate QBs that can hurt you in the passing game.

Would you adjust nothing and keep the pressure high with blitzing packages? Make their offense adjust to your defense. The risk is high if the blitzers miss the ballcarrier(s) and allow lots of running room. OR if you guess-blitz the wrong side.

Or would you tone down the blitzing, have the LBs stay put, and let the run come to them? Seems safer and more conservative against a running team. As long as the LBs can shed blockers and get to the ballcarrier, theoretically you could allow 2-4 yard gains and force 3-and-outs.

Not sure how many of you watched the GT UNC game, but from the very first instance that GT started doing their option stuff, it's obvious that they were bound to mess it up eventually. Their QB would throw the ball up so quick to his teammate from only a few feet away that his reaction time had to be incredibly quick to get it, and is/was only a matter of time before there would be a misque.

They will get some big plays with it, but I will bet on at least 2 turnovers due to them doing options, and what we do with those turnovers will be the difference in the game.

defending a team like GT is all about gap control....cover your gap and don't overpursue, don't break contain and if you can't make the tackle try to funnel the carrier back toward your guys

there are such things as run blitzes too.

We started out as a couple point underdog in that game and the line moved ~5 points towards us in the course of the betting week. The public might favor us again in this one too.

EDIT:

sports insights tells me that 271 bets have been taken across all the online sportsbooks and the 72% of the public is on the Wolfpack early

I hope that you are right.

I believe though that the difference in this game will be our defensive secondary. They have been playing well but they will be tested this weekend. Their youth might show. They will have to be dedicated to maintaining their responsibilities for reverse coverage and those tricky play action passes (GT burned UNC on one of these pass plays on a big 3rd dn). They will also have to make the required individual open field tackles. I am not so confident in the latter.

As in the UCF game, we will have to score first and early if we want this win. Keeping our offense on the field will also be key, because the GT offense will definately wear down our D.

Go Pack.

[Edited on September 20, 2010 at 11:17 AM. Reason : .]

I agree with the gap control..... and our LBs have had over pursuit issues.

I put that on the offense. The score became close because we gave up end goals with the entire secondary composed of 2nd string, but the reason I think we do need to score early is because the opposing teams defenses, even crappy, have been able to slow down the offense the last two games.

I think we'll see more mistakes on the defensive side of the ball just because of how GT runs their offense and it will greatly depend on our teams preparation and awareness, but my concerns this season have been with the offense and the kicking game.

http://www.fannation.com/blogs/post/305036-how-to-defend-the-triple-option

fascinating...

Quote :
"Well guys LSU has been matched up with Georiga Tech. It's no reall secret that Georiga Tech runs the option. Well I play MLB on a high school football team that runs the exact same flexbone, double wing, triple option crap that they run, so I'm gonna give you a little inside view on how it works (atleast in our similar system), and how to stop it.

I'm not gonna sit here and tell you that nobody knows how to stop the option, becuase I would be lying to you. Coaches know how to stop the option, but it's a relativly hard play for defensive player, especialy LB's to comprehend and get to where its second nature and they know what decision to make the second they have to make it.

I'll start with the pre-snap stuff. At the begining of the play the first thing that the linbackers look for is the fomation thier in. It doesn't matter if there is only one unbalanced wing back or two two balanced ones, either way the option can go either way. The second thing you look for is motion, if a player comes in motion each Linebacker shifts a foot to the side that he's motion to, but stays balanced because it still can go either way. When the ball is snapped the Linebackers have the hardest job.

The play side Linebacker has to reckonize immediatly that the play is going his way and step up, buzz his feet and stay near the pitch man without letting him get inside of him while keeping his body square. It's the corner and saftey's job not to let that man get outside so he can not give him a lane to cut in by getting inside (I've been chewed out for doing this many times). The Middle linebacker has to immeidatly realize what side the play is going to as well and quickly get over the top of the line or the box without being blocked. So basicly his goal is to get off of the defensive end's outside butt cheek and buzz his feet and wait on the QB. During this whole time the MLB has to stay square to the line of scrimmage and not let the QB outside while squeezing him enough to not allow and inside cutback lane. The problem most teams have is that thier MLB always sees the Fullback dive and bites on it, then the QB has nobody to contest him so he keeps the ball and has at the least a crisp, easy, uncontest 8 free yards or more. The backside Linebacker has to immeiatly realize that he cannot chase the play down in the backfield so he has to just run full force to help stop the dive by the fullback.

I understand that it's hard to understand just by reading it like that so I'm going to go ahead and provide you with an example to explain it better.

Alright, I'm the Right Outside backer, I see the offense come out in a regular flexbone, double wing set. I glance at the line to make sure I'm atleast 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. The wing back on the other side motions towards me, I automaticly without thinking shuffle over a few feet to the point where I'll be in better position to make the play if they run to my side, but not out of the play if they don't. The QB snaps the ball and options to the Fullback on my side and the wing nearest to me comes out as a lead blocker. I immediatly step up and avoid the lead block or atleast closeup the lane to where the pitch man could not cut up the middle when the Saftey and Corner apply the outside pressure becuase there is a blocker in the way.

Alright, now I'm the middle backer, same thing, flexbone double wing, man comes in motion, I slide over a bit, and when the ball is snapped I see the left wingback is a lead blocker and the right wing back has come in motion, so I'm automaticly over the top by the defensive end's outside butt cheek buzzing my feet, staying square and not giving heQB anywhere to run.

Same thing, except now I'm a LOLB, the ball is snaped, i don't pay attention to where anyone is going, I just fly to where the dive is and help out the line.

There are a few exceptions, but not many to these rules. One thing you have to watch as a middle backer though is the trap, if you see a pulling guard and no possiblity of a toss, then you have to take the dive in that case.

The option has been figured out guys, it's just a matter of applying it to the players. I've been playing against the option for more than 8 years as a defender and I still have mental lapses. It's a hard system to defend, but if you catch someone on the right day in which things are clicking you'll lose. Because if everyone plays there asignment correctly against the otion, it will be a 3-4 yards loss almost everytime. But on the reverse side of that, if one player plays it wrong one time, it will make you look stupid.

I'm not gonna say that LSU will do exactly this, but I can guarentee that it will be along these lines. The fact that this bowl game is so far away plays to LSU's advantage, because the more time you have to learn how to defend the otion the easier it is to stop and it also plays into our hands that many of our players played against the option alot in high school because Louisiana has more triple option teams than most states."
