Without an HOA in my hood I wouldn't have a boat ramp, dock access, crab pier, pool, open grassy area perfect for picnics, sunbathing, and viewing the sound, or neighborhood lighting. 12/26/2010 10:57:04 PM |

Can someone explain to me how chain link fences, or fences, are bad for property values? My bf's parents have spent our whole Xmas with them complaining about the neighbors putting in a nice-looking wooden fence to provide exercise space for their dog. They live in a Milwaukee suburb and are also bitching about it ruining the 'rural atmosphere', and I'm like, "uhh, you live in the 'burbs?" As a dog owner I think a fence is far better than dogs running around loose, or choking themselves on a chain runout. 12/27/2010 12:54:44 AM |

Personally, chain link fences look bad and cheap.
Fences in general, I don't really have a problem with. But if you've got a neighborhood where no one has a fence and it's got some nice "continuity" or "flow" to it...then someone puts up a big white picket fence...then I can see people bitching about it. Sometimes fences just stick out and don't look right when you look at the rest of the neighborhood. 12/27/2010 8:01:30 AM |

I think wooden fences look nice. Much better than seeing your neighbor's toys and junk. Chain link fences, if well kept, are not a problem for me either. They're certainly utilitarian, but I don't see them as an eyesore.
My neighbor's chain link fence was crushed in at least 6 sections by Hurricane Fran and they never fixed it. They're an older couple and I guess it'll be there until a new owner moves in. I do have a decent row of bushes that blocks most of the view of it. Makes me want to put up a wooden fence just so I don't see their chain link fence.

Chain-link fences just look like shit. They're good for some things, but not residential property. 12/27/2010 2:57:09 PM |

^FTW chain link definitely screams trailor park. Wooden fences look nice when new, but end up looking like crap after a few years. 12/27/2010 5:51:40 PM |

black iron looks the best from an aesthetic standpoint but I'm not paying to put up a fence that doesn't provide any privacy. When we put up a fence a few years down the road it will be wooden. 12/28/2010 10:17:19 AM |
