Mario is a great pro, but only played great in about 10 games during his NC State days. He went number one based on potential and one dominating game vs Maryland.

Torry Holt did not have his degree when 81 was retired.

His jersey was retired on Jan. 16, 1999 during halftime ceremonies of the final NC State-UNC basketball contest that was played in Reynolds Coliseum.

Holt spent much of his off-season in Raleigh in 2002 attending classes at NC State to finish his sociology degree.

Hell proof that RW is not in the running can be proven by the fact that PRiv was not even in the running. In 2003 Jason White won and where the fuck has he gone. In 2002 Carson Palmer got the award. Granted Palmer is a good QB but not in the same league as PRiv, Eli, or Big Ben from around the same age range. The difference was those two QB's were from USC and Oklahoma go fucking figure.

Wilson is out of contention because he's not playing for a top 5 team.

The winners you listed between 2001 and 2008 all played in the national championship game, except for Palmer in '02, Trojans finished 4th. They're big time schools because they're at the top more often than not, but no one is winning simply based on their school.

in for $100, but RW is a loooooong shot to get invited. Remember that Graham Harrell didn't get invited to NYC, which reinforces the "big" school bias. Even though Harrell didn't have a chance to win the Heisman he atleast should have been invited.

I'd argue that the entire BCS system, AP polls, and the rest of the crap is designed to indirectly keep the big schools on top. The system is a feedback loop. tOSU gets lots of attention from the media, the Bowl Computer Series slides them into a big bowl game, the top 25 polls votes them as elite team to keep the word out. As a result tOSU gets a consistently positive revenue stream and all the attention helps to sway recruits to come on board to keep the team full of the best talent.

I think a playoff tournament system would help this out. As your Texas's or tOSU's could be upset, teams like Boise State could end up in a national title game garnishing some additional money and prestige.

everything that HUR said is exactly what happens. Its a "rich get richer" scenario, just like what happens in society, if you have a big name, you get big recruits, which makes you a good team and get victories, which gets you into a bigtime bowl game, which gets you media exposure and a big name, which attracts bigtime recruits, etc. etc. etc.

I dont know why you keep bitching about it, its the way the system is. Its not like this only happens in college football or in the BCS ranking system, this happens in baseball (the yankees and red sox), pro football (the cowboys), college basketball (duke, carolina, kansas, too many to mention), hockey (detroit red wings), it even happens in politics (democrat and republican candidates retaining office), and in the business world (NASA, Microsoft, etc. getting the best engineers and scientists in the world to work for them, which helps them continue to make the best products/services possible, which helps them bring in more money, which makes the best scientists/engineers to want to work for them, etc etc etc). It happens EVERYWHERE and is essentially what the country is built upon.

You can't really compare the BCS as HUR described it to any other sports championship procedure, college or professional. It's a system that discourages parity, something that every pro league fights to maintain.

well I'm speaking more about college football as a whole. The BCS system is just a product of the college football world and is just a computerized way of ranking teams based on their success (which is a product of recruiting, etc.).

and pro football isnt as pronounced as the other examples, but you do have players who have said that they want to play for the cowboys because of their history as "America's team".

With salary cap and drafting system, for the most part any given team could be in contention for division
leader and/or end up in the super bowl (except maybe the lions or bills :p). The rams won the super bowl 10 years ago and are now one of the league's worst
teams. The steelers after winning the super bowl in 09, did not even make the playoffs last year. Also, the cowboys look like shit.

Sure the "big name" NFL teams may attract talent and get more media $'s (i.e. Eli crying until getting traded to the giants). The salary cap and draft though serve as the big equalizer.

College basketball has the NCAA tournament, where there is always the chance for a little known team to squeeze in and make a big
name by upsetting a few big teams.
