waste of a good closed deck block, many shops have proven that once you sleeve an EJ whener it was closed, open or semi-closed strength si the same if you are using good well installed sleeves.
We have done some EJs with up to 4 inch bores (sleeved) wonderful short stroke big bore. 11/16/2010 6:02:33 PM |

Where do you work and how much would it cost to have my semi closed deck sleeved ?
Also big bores tend to detonate more at high boost levels due to the less consistent flame front. 11/16/2010 6:28:40 PM |

Funny how the people with the least amount of mods sweat closed decks so much. Most people have a spun bearing or busted piston long before they drop a sleeve or some other such problem related to the deck design.

speaking of trubos, turbotime will be having a meet and greet on Dec. 5th.
local motorsport organizations (me) should be there to talk about autox/rallyx/road course and such.

I work at Turbotime... and you would have to talk to Ryan or Jackie on prices, but sleeveing is not cheap, I know we do have a built 2.2 for sale...it is a closed deck motor.
and yeah Dec 5th.. I think i am cooking again.
And int he grand scheme 4 inch is not a big bore, just bigger than most subarus. Check out one our cars we built in this Month's grassroots motorsports, article "Midlife crisis"

there are options now, but back when we had this one done there was nobody we trusted as much as John at R&D, he makes his own sleeves and does some amazing work. Since then there is a place on the east coast tat can do it for us that we trust. We discovered Costa mesa as he is fairly famous ont west for high powered Subaru powered sand rails. Sigh, I'm really upset to have to post this. Driving around doing a couple errands this morning. As I pull into the office when I'm done I get a very slight rattle. Wasn't loud enough for me to diagnose it on the spot. I didn't have any loss in power. My clutch pedal had been feeling a little bit funny, so I figured the flywheel was acting up or something like that. Ahmet suggested that maybe it was a fork bearing or something.
I decided to drive it to the dealer. About halfway there; maybe 1 mile, the rattle started to get louder so I slowed down. Maybe 100 feet later the engine cut off. I coasted into a parking lot. It cranked back up. The rattle was now an official knock. It's pretty clearly coming from the block. Yes yeah, I now have a grenaded engine in all likelihood.
No I haven't abused it. No it's not modded. Yes it's under Power Train Warranty. Yes Subaru will try and screw me out of it, and no I will not fall for it. I have nothing to hide, and it's convenient to tell the truth. I just got back from the dealer. It probably isn't going to be looked at until tomorrow or Monday. I'm pretty just having to sit here and wait. Horror stories are building in my head about how I'm going to get screwed out of the warranty. I'm going to do myself a favor and stay away from IWSTI and NASIOC until I actually need them for any reason.
arghx, if you gloat or say I told you so...I swear from the depths of my being I will hunt you down and beat the life out of you. I will extinguish the last bit of your soul by pissing on your lifeless body. Ok probably not, but please don't be a dick.

When I cranked it back up the oil light flickered a couple of times. It certainly didn't stay on. If the car needed more oil because it had burned some it didn't notify me. Also, it's not going to burn enough oil to cause this is it? I checked everywhere I've been parked for the past couple of days. There is no evidence of oil on the ground anywhere.
When I left and started running through scenarios in my head I decided that that flickering oil light would haunt me, and Subaru would tell me I was negligent so on and so forth. 11/19/2010 4:38:51 PM |

If anything, you have my sympathy. You see, turbo Subaru boxer engines (with the exception of unmodified 2.0's) are like turbo rotary engines. You know they're not going to last, but you like them anyway. Everyone I know who's had a turbo 2.5 Subaru has blown an engine or a turbo, or had some other problem that simply should not occur given the mileage. It's ok though. I've been driving Rx-7's for over 6 years, I know how it goes.
It sounds like rod knock though. I had a Mark III Supra that did that too. Again, you have my sympathy.11/19/2010 5:07:58 PM |

Still looks good though.
Also, about RX7s... only the third gen is an issue,, the rest of them are rather reliable, and the 3rd gen is unreliable due to the external running gear, IMO.
So, keep us updated on the issue, I'd hope that you can get it covered under warranty, I mean this is exactly what the warranty is for... 11/19/2010 8:22:02 PM |

Also, all Porsches since 97 or so check the oil level every time you start the car/or during idle... Most 996's will force it onto the display for 45 seconds every time you fill up...
That said, oil level almost certainly not a cause here. You'd have to be seriously low on oil for a while before something like this happened. I had a 944 turbo waiting for a new engine that was run like 3 quarts low for several hundred miles, with an occasionally flashing oil light and all... And the Subaru in question never had the oil light till after the car committed seppuku for not doing a track event... 11/19/2010 9:47:35 PM |

On the later models it's a manufacturing problem more than anything else. Lots of people blame the factory engine calibration but I'm not buying it. That blame is exacerbated by internet forums and vendors (Cobb) trying to sell computer reflashes.
The argument is that the Subaru factory calibration on these later models keeps the engine in closed loop too long (running at ~14.7:1 air/fuel ratio) as the engine goes into boost, and that must be causing knock repeatedly. Yet Subaru isn't the only manufacturer to do this. In fact, the Evos have a "lean spool" system to improve performance. I'll spare you all from me posting screenshots of the calibrations in question.
Also, nobody seems to find evidence of serious knock when checking the Subaru knock learning tables on these engines that seem to be blowing. Subarus aggressively control knock with three stages of knock control: immediate knock sensor feedback, fine correction (knock learning table for specific load points), and coarse correction (overall multiplier that has a large effect on timing advance). So not only does the computer immediately retard timing when the knock sensor detects noise, it memorizes the knock sensor noise and only advances timing when the noise goes away. 11/20/2010 12:08:59 AM |

I forgot to take a picture of this turbo when I was over at the garage, maybe I'll remember later. It's still sitting sealed in the bag the vendor (BNR) sent. It's kind of a Frankenturbo. It has the original turbine housing from IHI so that it will bolt up to the factory Subaru up pipe, and I think the wastegate's been ported. The center housing rotating assembly is Mitsubishi with a TD05 turbine wheel and 18G compressor wheel. The compressor housing is actually the factory housing off an 87-91 Rx-7 turbo, machined to fit the wheel and the factory turbo inlet hose. The wastegate actuator appears to be a universal Garrett unit set to 14psi, with a threaded rod to adjust preload in the arm.
I bet the 18G compressor wheel originally came on a diesel truck (Fuso?) or some diesel heavy machinery. The TD05 turbine wheel is probably the same one used on DSM's. My friend picked this turbo because he still wanted a lot of response and torque. He plans to keep the stock STi top mount intercooler for the foreseeable future, so he can't really go too big. We're switching to a 3 port boost control solenoid and I'll probably get it dialed in to around 20psi which isn't that aggressive on these motors. 11/20/2010 12:20:09 AM |
sumfoo1 soup du hier 41043 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah it's not too bad on an sti intercooler my plastic end tank intercooler has a chance of blowing the end tanks off it above 18 psi.

Ahmet, if it wasn't oil level related its just a bad engine build or tune. Not something I would want on a 30k car.

I'm resigned to move this car in the couple months after this is sorted out. The 08 model year is probably dead to me. I will reserve judgment on Subaru as a whole depending on how this is handled.

It's meant for turbo diesels and is supposed to maintain viscosity at higher temperatures and not burn inside a turbo.
