Today is a perfect chance to sent that e-mail.

Equality NC just organized a day of constituent meetings with their elected officials with about 200 people from across the state going to do some face to face meetings, many of them with republicans, some with republicans who expressed a possibility that they might budge on this issue.

Now is absolutely the time to have those meetings followed up with their inboxes being filled up.

It is being introduced tomorrow as Senate Bill 106.


It will cost the state 5.7 million to do this during a time of budget crisis, when NC States own budget is being cut by millions.

Depending on wording, it will mean businesses in the state can't decide their own benefits packages for partners which is something some businesses consider in deciding where to locate, and/or to attract the best talent. This new regulation could be a little bit of an HR nightmare for triangle area businesses especially.

It means messing with a constitution that doesn't need amending, and wasting time on something largely redundant with existing law.

And I think of all the gay students who have submitted suicide recently, I have to wonder how a whole state voting on just how banned their chances of ever getting married should be (regular banned or super redundant banned) will affect kids in our state like them.


Now is a great time to send an e-mail or make a call if you care to.

You can sign up for Equality NC's listserv. They send out alerts when something big happens, when its a good time to send out an e-mail or make a phone call or attend an event:

And sharing that link, getting as many people tuned into their information and action alerts as possible would help.

If you're feeling particularly engaged, and have a few minutes to spare, you might even go by their office in the General Assembly and just speak to them as a constituent (or speak to their legislative aid & leave a note for them if they are out of the office when you stop by).

Equality NC is the main group fighting back against this. But some other groups in the area that might have events or calls to action that you may want to join listservs for, or follow on facebook or twitter are the LGBT Center of Raleigh, the GLBT Community Alliance (NCSU Student group), or the NCSU GLBT Center.

Any state that elects Jesse Helms for 30 years straight will never allow gay marriage. Your attempts to fight this at the state level are as misplaced as trying to desegregate alabama through a grassroots effort.

Nothing short of federal defunding or military force will bring about the change you seek.

10.4% unemployment and this is what the NC GOP focuses on? Even worse is right after this passed they have gone into recess for the next few months. Perhaps come November 2012 they will be awarded more time off than they bargained for.

We e-mailed about it in November in 2010. This is only a part of that e-mail: “I am going to take a lot of heat for opposing the marriage amendment, I know that, but whatever heat I take is worth it for the honor of standing up to reassert our Constitutional form of government.”

I guess he wasn’t up for taking the heat after all since he voted for it in one reading and in one reading he didn’t vote against it. I’m pretty disappointed because I thought having a libertarian on the record against the amendment would stay against the amendment, but I guess partisan politics outweighs even libertarians convictions once they get to office.

For some reason I expected better of a libertarian. Some of them may be a little touched in the head, but at least they stick with their convictions, or so I thought. Guess not.

While I'll be voting against this garbage, I have been unsuccessful at convincing others to do so. Which baffles my mind because I don't really subscribe or use the "gay civil rights" (or similar) arguments, mainly because that's not my platform... I use the tried and true logical reasoning of... freedom... who knew so many Rs and Ds weren't really honest when they said they support freedom.
